Why do you still live on the east coast?

I'm an east coaster, and I follow tons of west coast based companies/mountains on Facebook. Every day I scroll through and see amazing pictures and videos.

The west coast has bigger mountains, better parks, way more snow, more sun, and longer seasons.

Yet tons of people, like myself, remain on the east coast. So I wanted to ask the east coasters of NS, why do you do so?

Is it because of family and friends? Because you're satisfied with the skiing that the east coast offers? Maybe skiing isn't your whole life?

Simple. School. That's the only thing really keeping me here. After college I plan on moving out there. I'm not close enough with my family to let that hold me back from what I really want(as terrible as that may sound).

My best friend would probably be the one to move out there with me. She's a good enough boarder to make it happen out there and if she goes, I'm going with her. Simple as that haha.

School and family mostly. But I'm probably moving out west next year for at least a year. I can finish school out there and family can always visit and you can always visit them. But the East Coast has a vibe than can never be topped. The East Coast puts out some of the best and most talented skiers because of it. East Coast really has a diehard vibe. No matter what we are out there in rain, sleet, snow, ice, and the occasional sunny day. I love the East Coast and what it did for me

Skinny-PI've never been out west. But on the east coast I feel like those few days where the snow is right, the Temps are right, and the suns out and you can huck all the tricks you don't wanna throw on bulletproof feel like nothing else I've ever felt in my life. They are the best days you could ever ask for and we don't get many of those every year but those days will never get old to me. And the days when it's sub 0 Temps and harder than rock are the days where we say fuck it and go out because we love skiing and we wouldn't want to do anything else but ski on ice that day. The West coast might be paradise for a skier but every skier knows that feeling of that perfect day won't last forever and soon it will become the norm. I never want those perfect days to become the norm for me. That's why I love the east coast


So you never want to ski deep powder often because it would become "normal"?

I'm going to school for basically free at my local CC, but once I get my 4 year degree I'm taking my chances and heading out west. It's been my dream like I'm sure it has been for a lot of east coasters. Some of us stay home, but I know for sure that I belong out west, not here living by the mole hills. It might be risky because I have connections, family, and friends here. But at the end of the day I'm only gonna get the chance to ski park for one period of my life. Why spend it smashing my head off ice and having lame ass winters?

So i have lived in the East all my life but recently moved to Montana for school.

Just a few observations.

The stoke on the east is real
There's nothing like fall in New England
The snow sucks, but we still love it and that's what makes East Coast skiers so badass.

The West is sick, it's a totally different vibe which is sick, but the East is also. I wanted to experience something new and get out of the east, not just for skiing (mostly for skiing). Definitely have a different perspective on where to take my life and if i want to come back East after school or not. But at the same time, the East is home and where most of my family is so it will always have a place in my heart.

In a way, yes.

In short, I'd feel spoiled if I were able to ski powder/great conditions nearly every day. Having bad days make the good days great and the great days amazing, The vibe on an east coast powder is probably the greatest vibe in the whole world.

It's because of the vibe that east coast skiers give off. They are real hardcore, no business skiers and it's great because we're not spoiled out here. We get fucking stoked for half an inch of snow. You just don't get that out west.

Lived out west for 5 and a half years, then moved back east. If you're from the ease originally, you tend to always miss your roots since you're embedded with it in your bones.

Not to mention there's not really any careers or decent money to be made in a ski town unless you want to tend bar until your death.

You should probably move to a poor 3rd world country with that mentality. Imagine the joy you would get when you get a proper meal.


If that is seriously your mentality, you need to re evaluate what life is all about. It'd be like saying you met the woman of your dreams, but you keep her a semi casual one night stand instead of being in a proper meaningful relationship.

well i don't live in the east anymore, but i do miss the grooming out there. if i only wanted to ski groomers, id ski sugarloaf over whistler in a heartbeat. we don't have steep groomers out here. they would never take the time to winch cat something as steep as upper gondi line. id also say that you can get going faster on narrow gauge then you can on the dave murray downhill course, and kangaroo hill is like the bigger version of triple trouble.

I am 18 years old. Fresh out of high school and stuck a community college for the next 8 months, and i hate waking up everyday and going to this shitty ass school.


I recently got a job that will allow me to make enough money to buy a car by july and have a couple grand left for other purposes.



You know what im gonna do? Quit my job in in a year, put a down payment on an apartment in colorado and set off on a journey.


I've been wanting to move out west for the past 4 years and was dreaming of shipping off to college and going out west but unfortunately i dont want to be in an insane amount of debt.


So i figure when i'm young have little to no responsibilities..why the fuck wouldn't i pack up and do my thing in an area where i'm gonna be loving life?!?! I've waited long enough to be out there and i'm taking initiative and doing what i want to do.

Haha wow I think you missed my point... What I meant was that I love the stoke on skiing in the east. That's all.

Granted I haven't lived out west, but I've skied out there and my brother goes to school in CO. Between that and just from what I hear, the mentality on skiing out west seems to be different than that on the east.

As much as you hate Community college...you are saving a shit load of money doing 2 years there and 2 years at a state if you choose to do that. Long term will be worth it. Crush your grades and give yourself opportunity

I think being an hour and a half away from the beach as well as the poconos really is what I love about the east coast. And as others had mentioned we make due with what we have out here and it makes us better. Plus I think we really appreciate the time we have because we don't get as much as you west coast guys.

Family and school but also because I'm still saving. Im pretty sure the crew is moving west with me to so it will be sweet to have some homies I already know. As much as I love New England I need to go somewhere that has a more open "counter culture"

Family first and foremost, but I fucking love the people who think there isn't a shitload of pow skiing on the EC. GOOD! Move to Denver thinking you're doing yourself a favor. I've skied literally dozens upon dozens of pow days on the EC even on mediocre years simply because there's so much there to choose from and so few skiing it- literally 95% of the "diehard BC skiers" move out west thinking it just isn't here because there isn't a huge scene built up around it. There is... If you can make those turns, that is!!


So yeah. Knowing what I know now, I'll stay here thank you. Sure UT, WA etc are amazing, but there's something to be said for a quiet, cozy BC with deep pow stashes for as long as you feel like lapping it, little to no avi danger and steeps nobody else is clamoring for. I still love and long for the Wasatch, but home is still home- and it's lightyears above what the vast majority of the public gives it credit for.


So yeah- I'm personally fucking stoked that all the guys who couldn't be bothered to work to find it here moved away. More for me!

I don't think I will ever move out west for a number of reasons.

Just like a lot of people have said, the east is my home. My family is here, and my friends are here

Yes the skiing is of course better out west, but it is also pretty fun here aswell, especially the park scene. You see so many good park skiers come from the east. Tom wallisch, will wesson, and andy parry just to name a few. Why? Because the stoke is so high here.

Also skiing is not my life. I don't think I will be working in the ski industry when I'm 30, so I I don't feel any need to move out west.

Also, of course there are good colleges every where. But new england has some of the best colleges in the country, which is important to me and my parents.

I am not saying the west sucks. Cause obviously the skiing is incredible out there and way better than here. Im just saying that moving out west is right for some people and not for others.

IMO, if all you want to do is ski in your life, move out west, if you an east coaster now and think you want to do something different than ski, you should consider staying in the east.

Im still gonna go to school..but im taking a break and do me for awhile. If i can establish residency in colorado in s few years ill probably hit up a cc in denver then go to boulder. But im done living in a shitty city..i cant take new york anmore man, i need the mountains

I don't live back east any more but I love the vibe of mountains like mrg or jay on a powder day. It seems like the competition to ski the most pow is much less than areas out west, everyone is out enjoying the snow. Night skiing too, such a unique vibe.

Anyone can huck off a cliff, but only real skiers can shred a narrow, icy, bumped up tree chute in style.

The reason i still live on the east coast is just you know its.....its just home i love the vibe up here you know like its crazy how outwest you guys have snow all year in places like Mt .Hood and thats cool. But sometimes i love how the weather is on the east coast. Like one day it could be 50 and sunny out and then the next morning you wake up and like theres 2 ft of snow on the ground. There are some great riders up here to and great parks like Carinthia , killington, Shugarbush, the list goes on and on. I would love to go on a trip out west but idk if i could ever leave the east coast its just where i feel most at home right here in mass.

GratefulGrizzlyI lived in VA, and my entire family lives in VA. If you're unhappy with the skiing quality of the east coast I'd say move. You're young, do it while you can. Don't be 35 and say "I had the chance to move and West and ski but I didn't.."

West is where it's at.


I'm currently living in Virginia and preparing to move out west next August and this is exactly what I needed to read. Nowadays, High School is so college driven that when I tell people I'm taking a year off to move out to Utah in order to ski and get situated they think I'm insane. I just don't want to look back in 15 years and wish that I had, so I'm going to do it while I can.

I like living in wisconsin because it has given me an opportunity to go skiing everyday because the hill is close enough to drive too and night skiing. Plus skiing on the worst makes the best easy. Im also a rail rat and the midwest has plenty of rails. I would like to move out west after highschool, because the west is best.
