What is the best big city to live in as a skier?

I would have to say Calgary is one of the best. We have C.O.P. which is inside the city and tons of mountains like Lake Louise, Sunshine, Fernie, Castle, Kicking horse, and Revelstoke close by. We also get a dumping of snow every year which is good for urban and there are some really good urban rails.

There is also Vancouver that has Whistler (enough said), grouse, and Cypress. It looks like Vancouver is always raining and doesnt get that much snow for urban and such.

SLC and Denver look really good too.

FunkadelicI grew up in PA, and lived in Philly for two years. Definitely not even close to being worth mentioning on this list. Big Boulder is barely a hill compared to the resorts being discussed in this thread. There's also closer/better skiing to Philly than Big Boulder. Blue Mountain and Camelback would be a similar driving distance and are significantly larger. Still not even close to Philly being worth discussing here.


Fosho man thanks for answering my question, as a western skier I've always had a fantasy of going east and doin the whole fucked up ice coast shred the worst to become the best type deal. I agree though this thread is mostly about cities close to dope big mountains and pow. Just was curious as to what the east coasters had to say on big cities close to skiing (even if it's east coast hardcore real shit).

danbrownright...nowhere did I say it was a bad thing. the original post said "best big city" and I responded by saying salt lake has no big city feel...because it doesn't and isn't. the downtown area is like 4-5 streets and you can walk to a super suburban neighborhood in under 10 minutes



I actually didn't know it was that small, I presumed it was bigger actually. It sounds like a really cool place to live, so many different areas to lap at

I laugh when you say salt lake is a clean city. SLC has one of the worst air quality ratings in the world.

I live a few towns below SLC and it is the fucking best. Utah is arguably one of the most beautiful places to live in the world! The licence plates don't say "Greatest Snow on Earth" for nothing. Pull your heads out of your asses and appreciate SLC and Utah. They are unmatched.

The religious shits are only bad if you live outside of Salt Lake proper. So just don't live outside of downtown. People forgot to mention that Powder Mountain and Snow Basin are just an hour away also. SLC is great.

Zurich is pretty nice... Laax is like a 90 minute drive.

Grenoble has a 9 month season with only a 90 minute drive to L2A

Annecy is kinda small, but only 45 min drive to La Clusaz

there are like 7 big places to ski and most of the ski hills are between 45 and 60 minutes away (save kirkwood.)

The drive from Denver isn't that terrible and I think it's a really cool place. Big cities make me a bit nervous but, Denver always felt manageable. I've lived in Fort Collins for the last 5 years, which throws on an extra hour but, it really isn't that bad. It took me 6 hours to get to Steamboat once, but I've also made it to Winter Park in less than 2. Plus everyone in the Front Range skis so, there's a huge community whether you're a jaded ass local or a yuppie weekend warrior you'll always be able to talk snow with someone. And if you want to earn your turns, there's plenty of places to be alone.

SLC has great skiing very close by.
BUT.............SLC is a dump, filled with odd Mormon people, and tons of air pollution.
I loved the skiing there but SLC truly is a dump, compared to other cities.

slaphappyPortland should be thrown into the mix...less than a hour and a half to Ski bowl, Mt Hood Meadows, Timberline, and a couple others.


T-line also has summer skiing and a bunch of fun shit at ski bowl too.

Going to have to say Reno. An hour or less drive to pretty much every resort except sierra and kirkwood. Mammoth is 3 hours away and SLC is like 8 hrs away. Nevada is also the shit if you are into guns. I have also lived in Portland and Seattle. Reno is by far my favorite from a skiers standpoint.

Denver is honestly the worst big city for skiing when you factor in i70 on a snowy morning... i'd rather live in cali and do 3-4 hours one way then be stuck in i70 for 3 hours because i didnt leave until 8:30
