I know there are more brown pow lovers on this site, yah there is pinkbike but lets be honest, newshcoolers is wayyyy cooler. so lets posts our rides, questions about components, mechanic questions etc in this thread.

I just bought this beauty and i definitely sacrificed uphill capabiltiy in order to get a beefier dh/park bike. id been on a nomad for a while and it's a huge switch in riding styles for me. definitely getting used to the weight and having to keep speed a lot more.

specs for said beauty, 2011 rc2 dh totem, 2012 dhx rc4, highrollers front and back (gona go dhf front and highroller in the back), mtx 33 wheel set, slx brakes, diablous cranks, FSA 760mm Handlebar, Shimano SLX Shifter & Shimano Deore XT Derailleur.

For some reason those french dudes get put into this "class of their own" in some folk's minds, almost equivalent to Rachel Atherton's dominance. But the actual stats and splits don't quite back that up IMO. Of course, anyone who wins a world cup is an "Elite of the Elites" but that's the whole point. And historically, plenty of other riders have had really successful seasons. So I don't see the last two years as that exceptional. Putting Gwin, Hart, etc in some weird class of "way faster than your local legend, but not legit podium contenders" doesn't make sense to me at all, and historically their results would beg to differ.

Anybody who is in the top 60 who actually qualify for finals is "some of the world's best and will absolutely wipe the floor with the average top local racers."

Anybody whose name we actually know (like the guys you listed) is an "Elite of the Elites." Those two frenchies have had two good years. How many strong years has Gwin had? Minnaar?

You say you'd be surprised, but personally I can't see anyone beating those boys again this coming season, but I'm stoked to find out.

I found it hilarious he didn't mention Minnaar, Luca Shaw, Reece Wilson, David Trummer or Benoit Coulanges who just beat his household names in the French National DH race and he didn't know Pierron was just seriously injured. On the women's side, not one mention of Vali Holl, who is anticipated to be the best since ACC. This kid has no fucking clue.

Oh fuck, that's pretty gnarly. I saw he'd had an off over the weekend, but at the time the muc-off team stated he'd been taken to hospital but his injuries were not too severe. Fuck were they wrong.

Man, I was so stoked to watch Vali jump up to Elites this year, but was also bummed 'cause it was going to be a weird season with Rachel and Tahnee coming off major injuries. Next year is shaping up to be absolutely wild on the women's side. I want Tahnee to finally have the great season we all know she has in her, but Vali is going to be wild.

To Mailman's point. I think the podium is anyone's game next season. We'll be coming off a weird "reset" season. A lot changes over a regular offseason in terms of health, fitness, mental game, training, and tech. Folks come back stronger or weaker than they left, a bunch of young guns are going to age into Elites before the '21 season kicks off. There will be new blood, and old legends who took an opportunity to rest and finally take care of nagging injuries. When we come back in '21 we'll have had more than double the normal reset time. It's going to be near impossible to predict who will be on top next year. But I'd put $5 on the last two years of french dominance not continuing, at least not from the two guys you listed.

If Luca has the kind of year I think he could, I'll be screaming at the TV a lot more.

Agreed, I'm also rooting for Tahnee. I've done the odd uplift ride with her and Kaos at Revolution Bike Park before, for sure my claim to fame.

So yeah coming back from the break it's going to be super interesting to see who comes out on top. Amuery's Commencal edit he stuck out not so long ago was sooo fcking badass. He was definitely making a statement. Gutted he's picked up this injury.
Hoping Gee Atherton can find some form back too.

Obviously it's becoming less and less likely a full-stacked Rampage event is going ahead, but Gee had a zoom video meeting with a bunch of other riders a few days ago, Brandt, Steenbergen etc (info courtesy from his insta stories).. so at least that means he should get an invite back for whenever it goes ahead.

a_pla5tic_bagWhats the deal with lighting if I want to ride at night? It'll be dark and in the woods, low intensity XC type stuff so I'm not going 50mph, but the trails are tight.


I've been night riding a lot this summer on mostly dirt roads through deep woods. I run three lights mounted on the bars, basically to run two at a time and have one as backup, tho I turn it on through the darkest areas. Two 600s and a 900 lumen. Also have a 500L headlamp that I keep on low and crank it up as needed. (Fenix headlamp, cygolite 600s, light & motion 900)

I get about 1.5-3 hours of charge depending on the particular light and the setting I use, usually medium all around and high if I need it, though I never plan to ride more than an hour or so at night just to be safe. I carry backup batts for the headlamp and an extra flashlight also, as well as bear spray and other essential gear for being outdoors at night and alone in the woods.

Should I buy a dirt jumper or a trials bike? I don't have any dirt jumps near me or I would definitely get the dj. I could also get a bmx but I was thinking with a dj I could at least do some trials-like stuff more so than a bmx. Thoughts/advice?

Haha. If they were the same it wouldn't matter what I got because I'd be able to do the same stuff with either. I'm looking to buy a bike to do some street stuff on besides my trail bike, and thought both a dirt jumper or a trials bike could be fun to do that, each in its different way. I've done some trials on my friend's bike and had fun, but I also think it would be fun to hit the skatepark and get some air and do other dirt-jumpy things.

I thought that there could be a chance that someone would have insight or experience with either that could help me decide between the two.

I’d just get a BMX bike, maybe a 24 inch. It’s just not worth it to get a dirt jumper if you don’t have any good jumps near you.

For anyone looking to quieten down chain slap on the cheap, I've found this works a treat.
Stick down a layer of rubber mastic tape, and then some heavy duty stick-on Velcro tape on top. I've also placed Velcro strips under areas where cables typically rub/hit against the frame too.

It wont be that different. Still sports a 64 degree head angle and a long reach and a steep seat angle. Im going to bump the shock stroke up to 205x62.5 and run a 160 on it. making it a 150/160 down from my 160/170 patrol.

Sweet. Didn't know you could do that to the Patrol. 150/160 is what my Ibis HD3 is... except 64* is a bit slacker...

If you got the dough, get a slope bike! I've seen some with gears even. I can 180 flat on mine and the full suspension will be better than the DJ.
