I know there are more brown pow lovers on this site, yah there is pinkbike but lets be honest, newshcoolers is wayyyy cooler. so lets posts our rides, questions about components, mechanic questions etc in this thread.

I just bought this beauty and i definitely sacrificed uphill capabiltiy in order to get a beefier dh/park bike. id been on a nomad for a while and it's a huge switch in riding styles for me. definitely getting used to the weight and having to keep speed a lot more.

specs for said beauty, 2011 rc2 dh totem, 2012 dhx rc4, highrollers front and back (gona go dhf front and highroller in the back), mtx 33 wheel set, slx brakes, diablous cranks, FSA 760mm Handlebar, Shimano SLX Shifter & Shimano Deore XT Derailleur.

.nastyPeople already said the chester, which is fine although I never really enjoyed the feel of it personally. It doesn't cradle your foot very well as the pin placement is a bit too congested. If you can up your budget just to $99, the ANVL tilt has gotta be the best bang for your buck aluminum pedal.


This. I really don't like Chesters. The small, high platform makes them feel more likely to slip a pedal and destroy your shin. I'd say the OneUp composite pedals, the plastic Kona Wah Wah's, or the Crankbro's plastic version, or the new Deity composite pedals are all way better options. I really don't get Chesters, and when people recommend them I always wonder if they've tried any other composite flat pedals.

They Chester was just the first (or first to be mass produced/advertised) composite pedal to really gain traction so I think it’s what people know.

The deity one looks friggin rad tho.

Totally, and somehow that cheesy "Who's Chester" marketing campaign seems to have paid off big time. I'm just on a mission to get people on different pedals, I feel like starting on Chesters has potential to make folks think all flat pedals suck, which is too bad.

Just got a 210mm OneUp dropper post in the mail. Actuator contacts the seattube pivot so I'll need to reduce the travel a bit. I bought it so I could get my seatpost lower when I go to the dirt jumps without having to adjust the clamp every time. Oops.

Still a sick seatpost though, and I'm sure I'll have a bike with a seat tube that allows me to get full drop soon enough, just waiting for Ragley to re-stock so I can put together a Mmmmbop build with as many spare parts as possible.

Clear safety glasses. Super cheap and you can find some with frames that barely look like safety glasses too.

Goodr sunglasses are only something like 25 bucks a pair, and they are polarized, so maybe not the best for an overcast day. For a shitty day I use my safety glasses

I would only buy a single to put in the rear tire unless you can get a good deal on 2. I have 2 but only bothered to put one in the rear because it's a lot of work. It's really nice to not have to worry about denting your rim, and I'd say it somewhat dampens vibrations but I can't say for sure. If you like to huck onto rocks and jump up ledges/have a history of denting rims I'd definitely get it

I went with the XC version in the rear only. I don't really care too much about the dampening properties but it sure is nice when you're smashing chunky terrain and don't have to worry about your rims at all. haha

For me its worth it but i live somewhere that destroys wheels. You definitely notice a difference on the uphills. If the only thing you are worried about is getting flats, just get a DD or DH casing.

Worth it is a relative term, but compared to other inserts and how well manufactured cushcore is and how well it interfaces with the rim and tire I'd say their prices are very fair. Cushcore is expensive but I am a huge fan because I like the peace of mind of rim protection when riding rocky terrain, of all of the tire inserts I think it is designed best for on-trail performance at the slight cost of ease of installation. I also like that I am able to run lower pressure when I want more comfort and grip without having the trade-off of having to hold back on downhills to protect from rim strikes. It feels like extra suspension once you find the right tire pressure.
The additional sidewall support is nice, but not as an incredible improvement as I initially thought it would be, a light sidewall is still a light sidewall and if I'm riding something very bermy I do add 1-2 extra psi.
Installation is not nearly as bad as people made it out to be when it first was introduced.
I have the XC version as well and it is pretty crazy how light it is, but I cant speak much to the performance of it as I used it on my winter bike with 2.6 tires which I think are a bit too big for the benefits of the XC profile to shine. I'm not as confident in the run-flat capabilities of the XC version either.
Also having an accurate tire gauge is important, I have a brass analog one and a smaller digital one that is smaller to keep in my fanny pack.
For how rocky some of the trails in Montana get, I'd recommend it for the peace of mind of rim protection alone

Thanks for the v well thought out response. My buddy just got his and is a huge fan, but the install process has me a bit nervous. That said, I've dinged up enough rear rims that it may be worth the splurge.

Come to the bike kitchen and I’ll help you install it, I’m usually in to volunteer during the evening hours. I’ve done it several times now and it’s easy if you explicitly follow the cushcore video. I’ve installed road tires that were more difficult than cushcore

just got back from an awesome fucking ride. goddam I wish I was on this mountain biking bs sooner, but better late than never. Swear to god solo rides are just as fun as riding with buddies. Setting your own pace and jamming out is the wave.

Anybody have experience with Maxxis Dual and 3C MaxTerra compounds? I've been running a Dual compound DHF for a while and want to know how much of a durability loss there is for upgrading to 3CMT. My riding style is definitely more of pushing my tires up to the grip limit and avoiding actually breaking traction.

I generally dont take the side of Skierman, but I guarantee you would shit your pants if you even stood on top of a couple of those big mountain lines, let alone ride it. Farwell Canyon is some real shit.
