Saga, you guys used to have the tightest contests. I know it's important to "get the word out" about the company (as if it isn't already), and running contests that make kids share Saga content like it's advertising, but these newer contests are stupid. #sagasummer was super cool when it was a weekly picture contest. It made you go outside and do cool stuff and get adventurous and creative. Fuck, Partners in Crime three years ago was easily one of the best contests I've ever seen, you guys got a ton of awesome submissions from kids cliff jumping to skiing in the summer. Do you guys still do the scavenger hunts, either? Those contests inspired radical activities and boosted the community. Now you're just telling kids to download a stupid app and repost pictures. Go back to the old Saga, you guys used to be great.

We still do scavenger hunts. Those contests were sick. But you cant keep doing the same thing year after year. Thats how brands die. Were just trying to do something new and different at all times and see what works. You may think the app is stupid but I can almost guarantee that in a couple years you will see a lot of other brands following in our footsteps.

The contests aren't as fun as they were, but I still enter them, even if I have a minuscule chance of winning because it only takes like a minute and if you win some free merch, instead of paying $50+ dollars you get it for free. Sure the contests have slid like I said above, but the cost of entering (downloading an app and reposting photos once a day for a minute for 5 days) versus the chance of winning $50+ dollars in gear is enough to make me say, "What the hell. Why not?"

I completely agree its unoriginal, and like Cy said "its not about the how many people you reach, its about how you reach them," which is saying, its not about the quantity, but the quality, is important as well. But again, it should be about doing sick stuff in the middle of summer and throwin a hashtag on the picture to help raise awareness for a brand, but what entering the "contest" all boils down to is winning merch. Thats the only reason I could think of NSers doing these contests. We all already know about Saga, and we are all probably doing something sick at one point or another, so NSers that entered the contest really only care about the possibility of winning free shit

I one hundred percent agree with everything you said, I realize I came across as ungrateful but I am more trying to express a danger for Saga then call them out. Basically in my super uninformed, low level NS'er opinion this is weakening their brand. So I have no beef with Saga, they can give who they want what they want, I just want to let them know that what they are doing is changing my impression of them.
I am not trying to say "Saga sucks, don't buy from them" on the contrary I think a lot of what Saga is and does is rad and I don't want to see that lost in this push for any kind of promotion.

Jason Levinthal recommended it in an interview he did a while back and as I work to help market my employer's brand I can't help but look around me and observe. I think in the freeski community valuable marketing is aimed at a core audience, not just shotgunned at every kid with an instagram who wants free swag. That is why I think marketing on NS and having a strong brand presence here (like Saga does) is so valuable. I think that to focus on this pansy, trendy, social media marketing weakens that strong core.
A lot of the kids who will share this and participate in it are posers, none of the skiers I respect or look up to at all ever do this kind of contest. When the posers are the ones supporting a campaign I tend to shy away.
Take everything I say with a grain of salt though, at this point I only have one class and a few months of work experience to back me up.

However, we already know that Saga has a strong presence in the NS community, and they will continue to have business from a group of people in the NS community, but with today's social media sites that basically every kid has, those kids will be followed by people that don't know which way the stunt ditch is, and maybe these are the people that Saga is trying to reach. They know that they have a good thing going with the freeskiing and snowboarding community, and they now want to show people that don't ski or ride that, "Hey, these Saga guys make cool shit and like hamburgers," kinda like Jiberish changing their actual clothing lines but instead changing their advertising campaigns.
TL/DR: Saga already has NS buyers, why not try to branch out to a larger audience and throw some merch to the fans for helping promote the brand to their friends

That is why one of our challenges rewards you for using any photo you choose and posting. It's the same Saga Summer thing we've been doing.
All this really is is us trying to find new and creative ways to engage our fans. It's no secret that there is a strong trend shift towards mobil usage. We just want to be out in front of that push setting the standard and trend for all the rest to follow in our wake. Some of our efforts may not work, thats fine, but like the great Wayne Gretzky said "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take". Its easy to sit back and run the same old advertising and marketing year after year. Look at how many brands post the same powder turn photo ad in magazines every year.
All that being said, the feed back from this community is key. Its what helps us grow and shapes our future.
So what about the kids who don't have the privilege of owning a smart phone or device but still want to support SAGA and wear your rad clothes? What about the app that is absolutely terrible on the android platform? What about the shirt you guys posed 2 weeks ago and had many many followers repost and go through all your stupid steps to try and win, and yet you have not notified a winner. Im sorry but this new way of giving out product is not only obnoxious and time consuming, but you are also taking away from what used to be an awesome giveaway every summer. Go back to just the #sagasummer and pick the coolest damn photo from that week like you used to. Kids would bust their balls to get free swag and now I and every single one of my friends couldnt be bothered to use a barely working app, repost a photo and throw some shotty looking graphics over a saga stock photo. Id much rather just go through the order process honestly.
I will still buy every saga product I can, I will still support saga just as I have from day one, but you should listen to your market group (the kids in these threads) and stop making things complex if youre going to throw out free stuff.

I find I'm getting really old with all the younger kids caring a lot more about Instagram and the likes they get. It makes me sad :(
Got my summer tshirts today. Very disappointed. They're made from blanks, have the dreaded box shape, no added length and an xl fits like a medium. Terrible quality.
