Focusing while following

Okay so i finally got my t3i but when i try to follow somebody, we vary in distance between each other because we dont keep the exact same speed... So how do i keep the lens focused on the object (person) while im moving along side them or behind etc... ?

Use a wide lens and stop down for max depth of field. Focus right near infinity and at f11 or so you'll pretty much be hyperfocal from like 5 feet out.

Check out this hyperfocal distance calculator, it's really useful on lenses with distance markers on them (not sure what they're actually called).

Exactly what he said, and as long as you keep a consistant distance from the subject you will have focused video
