Getting into rollerblading

So i have a long summer ahead of me, i figured i'd give the sport a try. The jib aspect of it looks sick, and my city has one of the sickest skateparks around (geneva). So here are a couple questions:

1. How close is it really to skiing, jib or jump wise?
2. What brands should i be looking at? i'm hoping to just have to buy one pair, so a good one.
3. Anyone here skate and can give me some inside info as to how hard/easy it is to pick up?
4. Will i seem gay next to skateboarders like those razor scooter kids do?

1. Rails are actually pretty close, and it will help your rails for skiing alot, plus its fun and there is a lot of variety in the types of grinds to do

2. Razor cult streets are good for their price, and are a pretty good introductory pair that won't cost you 300e

3. If you're half decent at ice skating it will be quite easy, but you will lean back waaay too much when you start because of skiing. Seriously, do not lean back it sucks.

4. Yes, many people view bladers as being below scootering people. I disagree, but many people hold that view sadly. The sport needs a bit of a kick atm if you ask me, get some new life to it because its actually sick. Take a look at some of the edits that have been posted up here recently, some have been sick.

Hope this helps, I don't know that much so ppl feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I want to get into blading and i have a pair but I have no one to go with. Sigh. But by razor genesis' for your first pair. Relatively cheap and durable.

It's fun. but don't expect to get good fast, makes skiing look like sloppy lil bitches on long sticks who don't even try for their grinds... but yea some cults, or remzz would be good beginer skates

BTW I suck at blading and am by no means extremely knowledgeable, I want to pick it up too and thats what I've learned/started experiencing, but I haven't done it for long and I still suck haha.

I agree about leaning back. I am starting to get annoyed at how much I have to lean back while rollerblading. I also think people lean back too much in skiing (I think leaning forward like on a segway is the best position to be in in skiing and blading.)

I have K2s Radical Pros which have smaller front wheels to create an incline (but they are not a freestyle skate so might be out of the question.)



Interestingly, Rollerblade have a model with a smaller 2nd wheel.



But for me, I the perfect Hetrocarving blade would be the top Rollerblade model, but with more boot incline (adjustable ideally) and a few more wheels.

.. the perfect Hetrocarv skate would also have rocker that was exaggerated at the heal to create forward lean... and I'd be wearing a big baggy black t-shirt to cover my ass (unlike many of today's roller-ass-bandits.)

I just bought a pair of dope Usd's and in my opinion putting in the few extra bucks really pays off on a pair of blades. They are easier to skate, they fit better, and they last longer. With that said the two major online blading stores like rollerwarehouse negotiate price. I called them and said I only have x dollars but I've had my eye on a certain skate for a while and they made it happen for my budget.

I honestly wasn't the biggest fan of it, but if you plan on royal grinding rails (like skiing), then it's pretty easy to pick up. Jumps are a little different because you don't get the carving aspect as much. Overall, if you can find a cheap pair of skates, why not? But I would pick a lot more activities like skiing or wakeboarding because they're definitely a better overall workout.

When it comes to blading, there's not much of a learning curve, but it takes a lot of time in order to make it look good and find style.

no mountain biking??
thats my favorite summer shred, and slacklines and bridge jumping are musts.


I used to blade for 6-7 years and got pretty good, but now i skateboard. Im not anywhere near as good, its frustrating sometimes cause ill be like "if i had blades i could do like 10 things here but i cant even hit it on a board" but thats why skateboarding is fun

I never took mountain biking seriously as a downhill pursuit until they told me that you can take the bikes up the chairlift in the summer months at Mt Buller in order to ride down. Not sure if people know about that. I didn't.

IMO, very much so.. especially if you copy many of the top bladers today who bend over (often switch) with their legs spread wide, in tight jeans pulled down, jockstraps showing, in a singlet... sliding down poles, or flamboyantly powerblading through the city.

If you wear tight bike shorts you will also look gay (but at least those are meant to actually have function.... preventing chaffing)

So you asked. A tall-t and baggy jeans/shorts can help, although the line between heterosexuality and homosexuality seems to be fading (fashion-wise.)

it will help you stomp shit on skis because you get used to landing level right under your boots.
rails will help with balance, but I dont find it to be all that similar to skiing. (blading has more variety/tricks)
its fairly easy to get into. much easier learning curve than skateboarding, but it gets challenging once you pick it up.

Alright, thanks for the input everyone!

Now i was looking at blades, considering a pair of Valo V13 with FLT II plates. Now can anyone vouch for this brand and model? i'm just worried about comfort. I mean i regretted my first pair of ski boots so so much, i wished i had done more research so i'm hoping to get it right this time round.

i would reccamend razors. easy to replace parts, cheap, great starter blades. they are normally medium stiffness, and it overral is great.

Seconded on the genesis skates. There is a reason the boot mould hasn't changed in like 15 years and its because its fucking solid. Kinda like how FT doesn't need to change their ancient boot mould cause its perfect*.

The featherlite frames that come stock are a great frame too IMO.

I would say personally I feel like skating is a total different feel compared to skis. Like jibs and stuff feel somewhat alike but In my opinion skating is super hard. Jumps feel weird as you have to land center. I got into this about a month ago and I have not really progressed very much. I have some razors genesys 7.2 which are really good(I think???). For me skating is taking a little bit longer then I expected to get down. I guess just varies on every person and no matter what though it is something new and fun!

HELP! Can someoneplease explain the relevance of wheel size? i assume its somewhat like skateboarding, the bigger the wheel, the smoother the ride (or softer). But what do i get if i'm gonna be hitting bowls most of the time? i'm looking at 55.5mm 89a E2 eurothane wheels right now. Any help?

just grow with the max size your frame can hold. i'm assuming you're running 4 wheels per frame at that size. if you're not and you're actually running anti's or freestyle, then get bigger than that.

Check out the remedyz os 4's. Good skate for $130 I just bought a pair for the off season to get into it. Also to most people its not what you ride that makes you look gay but more how you act. So just be nice and you'll get along fine

I also back the Genesis'. I've got a pair of 7.3s from 2012 and a pair of McLeod pro models. I use freestyle frames from ground control. Don't remember which ones.

yeah, bigger usually=better, after the first 2 pairs of wheels i pretty much just always went with the cheapest which were usually 4x4 and for a little while 'heat wheels'. Also mostly rode with with just 2 wheels/no antirock and just grinded my frames


btw just found out the full heat team movie is online and its so good in its capturing of the real vibes and energy of stuff

I love heat to death.

Bigger doesnt always means better, theres a science to wheel size. Bigger = Smoother - Higher Top Speed - Better able to maintain

Smaller- More Grinding Clearance, Quicker to get up to speed

Alright, I've narrowed it down to Razor Genysis 10s. Like out of all the boots i've looked at, i have literally seen no one hate on this boot, like 0 bad reviews. Any last says about this?

Its a good basic boot to get started on, and to figure out what direction you want to go afterwards. When youre skating with friends, or at a local park, as to try peoples skates. 99% of the time theyre down, and you can figure out what you like/hate

Anyway i would be saving 150+ bucks on these but still spending a shit ton. worth the investment? I don't know shit from Shinola about how skates ride so if anyone has got any insight on these, would love it!

I have no idea why but my genysis' have a hard time actually tightening around my ankle. No matter how hard I pull the binding or tie them they always seem a little loose. Anyone else have this problem? I have the right size skates too.

the problem is probably just that you are used to ski boots, and rollerblades are not ski boots.
but I would consider trying to tighten your liners so they are snug, the laces on the boot itself are pretty pointless.

It might be the feeling of being used to a more of a stiff flex from a ski boot. Also make sure that your pushing down on the buckle all the way till it makes a clicking noise which locks it in.
