religion: an over positive thing?

personally, i believe that all religions have accomplished very positive things for the world. it gives people something to believe in, be educated about, and religion gives people a sense of untiy. but on the other hand, it has created a ridiculous amount of confilcit and death over the years. it would be amazing to count the deaths caused simply by religion (the holocaust for example.) what do you guys think

woah woah...the holocaust was in no way caused by religion. if anything, it was caused by evolution...the fact that hitler believed the aryan race was the most evolved race, and that gays, blacks, and jews were the least evolved and needed to be weeded out...he even had a list of least to most evolved human races that he wanted to use for reference...

i do beleive in god, and all i can say is that when i didnt i envied those who did. And ya relgion has been partly responsible for many, many deaths and thats not right, but people still die due to their beliefs and kill for that matter. So ya there wasn't really any point to what i just said.

religon may unite people within a group, but the fact that its with in a group means that the unity is not good enough. for their to be unity it needs to be worldwide. This is why religions start wars, because one religion wants to be the only religon and the people who belive in that religion belive strongly enough to try and kill everyone else. The most disturbing thing i have probaly ever learnd about was during a crusade. A bishop had taken a city and he was looking for cathars. They look no diffrent than his christians, infact they belived in the same god, jesus, hevan, the only diffrence was how they viewed hell. When the bishop tookn this city and they couldnt decide who was a cathar and who was a christian, he said 'kill them all, god will know his own'. Its things like that that disgust me. They killed 20 000 people in that city, more than half were christans, because a religious leader said so. The fact that people listend and followed his orders is what scares me. that people can want their religion to be so domonite that they would kill their own belivers.

lanks, what i was trying to say was that if there was no religion, the holocuast never would have happened, the nazis would not have had a scapegoat to genocide. i know it wasnt a religious leader that destroyed them, but the facts stands if there was no religion, those people would still be alive and there would be much less prejiduce, the prejiduce that lead to the holocaust

Religion never killed anyone, its the sick crazy bastards that kill in the name of a supposed religion. Think about it, for anything good in the world there has to be an equal evil. Balance in all things.

arsenol, you are wrong. hitler viewed the jews as a race, not followers of a certain god or religion. it didnt have a thing to do with religion.

Except for the fact that Hitler was a Christian (in his own mind), he was supported by German Catholics, and he believed that Jews were an affront to his religion in addition to many other things. The Holocaust WAS fueled by religion.

lanks is right, the holocaust and hitler's reasoning behind it had nothing to do with religion. The interesting thing is, that with hitler's definition of a jew, he himself was jewish by his own definition, having a grandmother (I'm pretty sure it was his grandmother) who was jewish.

religeon was invented by man to explain away all the unexplainable things. As society evolved, religeon came right along, bringing us from worshipping trees and nature, onto polytheism and then monotheism. The monotheistic religions share not only their god, but also their desire to rule the world (except the jews, ill ignore them here). Christianity and Islam are behind almost all of the present day problems dealing with ethnicity

Religion can be a great thing. There is plenty of good that comes out of a lot of religion. But trust me there are plenty of crooked people that go to church and call themselves 'good christians'. They'll go in pray and sing their little asses off, but then when monday comes around they're back to the same old dirty shit such as money laundering. I think for a lot of poeple, religion is a way to make themselves feel better.

Personally, i think you could call overly organized religion the root of a lot of evil.

i find that religion WAS a good thing, when society had nothing to build upon, no way of explaining things taht happened on earth. However, society has elevated religion to such a high degreee it has become a sort of mind-control, if you will. we can explain things in life now...science, all that stuff...this is not directed toward all people of all religions so dont give me any generalizing shit...i just feel it is sort of archaic now. corrupt.

i also think that people misinterpret the bible and forget the golden rule of nearly all religions: only do things to others you would want them to do to you. people need to relaize that it was a different time that most religions were created and stop taking everything so literally

im doing a huge report on cassius clay and from what ive read about him, black muslims were incredibly racist to whites in the 60s and 70s. they influenced him in so many ways; money, martial decisions, and the entire vietnam situation. i didnt know anyhting about this religion and i was surprised how much it had changed. i guess, religion can completely dominate adn change your life, good or bad, based on how much you believe.

Religion in no way causes wars. Jesus's original message was of peace and love. Do you think he said anything like "fuck those muslims take the land from them"? Hell no. Its those whorish popes from the thirteenth century that were greedy and tried to take the land away from the muslims. They hid behind religion. The people back then were too fucking stupid to realize what was going on. Religion doesn't cause deaths. Dumb ass followers do.

NOTE: I'm not chrisitan or catholic or any of those other religions.

you are correct... BUT he's implying that religion is the center around so many major conflicts. The "my religion is better than yours" attitude. You're right that it is the followers that are the ones behind it, but religion has a way of controling people like you wouldn't believe. Look at the middle east... Islam literally dominates the region. Look at latin america. Europeans introduced christianity there, and it literally bound everyone together. latin america might be the "most christian" place on earth. The Europeans actually used it as a tool to control the masses when they found out that military force could no longer work.

And even look at ancient religions... Like Egypt and Greece... Religion ran the lives of these people. Living a good life and using religion as a guide is one thing... but over the course of history, religion get taken entirely too far.

Religion can be a wonderful thing, but it has also lead to the worst atrocities and wars our planet has ever scene.
The inherent problem with religion, at least with fanaticism, is that it is in direct conflict with rational thinking. Fanatical religion is based on what God or Allah or Joseph Smith or whoever says you should do. Even if this diety tells you to kill someone, something you KNOW is wrong, a fanatic still must do it, because their diety said so. Religion for fanatics trumps rational thought, and this is never a good thing.

i think that religeon was merely invented by civilisations as means of cntrol over the less educated majority of society. eg ancient greece, non christian rome, christian rome medievil europe where people would rewrite whole scriptures to change laws and hold control.

and yes religeon causes death everyday but so does poverty and war which is probably the responsability of the countries who are better off

Religion is great if you're using it just to better your own life, but it's when you start pushing your ideas on other people that the conflicts start. For a religion to work, it either needs to exist just within the individual or it needs to involve the entire human race, which human nature will never permit.

Yes, and not to mention the fact of how many genocidical issues have come about due to religion and ethnicity. Why is it such a big deal if someone doesn't live their life the same way you do. I will never understand religious radicals.

I was raised RC, but always had a hard time beleiving in it, Organized religion definately has a lot of really bad aspects, wars persecution and tons of other bad stuff has been caused by religion. While I have a hard time supporting religion (for those reasons), and an equally hard time beleiving in God (for other reasons) I will admit that I am jealous somewhat of those who do. Not the people who are totally brainwashed and cant think for themselves, but those who can still think for themselves but have faith to use as a crutch or for strength, I definately can't see having that kind of faith as being bad

Religion also causes problems on a smaller individual level though. For example celebacy. Restrictions like these that go against human nature only suppress things, like freud argued. Then they get multiplied and come back stronger. Case in point: all the kids that get molested by priests.

OK here is my well thought out point to make. Religions are all foolish if they dont evolve with society. The Islamic religion is the most progressive religion i know of. With the prophet muhammad(pbuh) they completely changed their beliefs from the christians. God gave them a new set of rules. One of the most important rules is to USE COMMON SENSE. this is crucial to being able to use the religion for dayd to day life, because it's common sense. Now as for religious wars and what not. for most cases REligion was just one way of getting things done. for the crusades the pope was only trying to get more power in the East(where the Eastern orthodox church had spread through Bizantium). for the extremists Alqueada groups, they have NOT evolved. they still believe paradoxes and mistakes that were written down in the Qu'ran and the Sunna(religioius books)
anyway Society could easily survive without religion because society evolves, if religion doesn't evolve it wont survive unless someone takes ove the whole world(good luck with that one).

I dont know the exact definition of religion, and I am not sure how much stuff can be blamed on religion. But I am a Christian, and I read the bible( both old and new testament). Without my faith, life is futile. Thank you Jesus!

I'm speechless that you just said that. Honestly. So everything that that Jesus guy ever said about loving others and forgiving and everything else, that's really just a cover up for hatred and evil. Did you know that the founder of Scientology agrees with you though? He thinks Jesus is a force of evil, and aliens implemented his fake message of love in our brains.

Religion could be a good thing if it would follow the present society. But religion is all about conservatism now, coming back to the past. I had enough of religion, I think we should follow are oun beliefs without associations. A group of people can be very unstable. Paranoya can set in very easily.

The Bible is a historical book, The Old Testament was specifically written to a group of people in a societal context DRASTICALLY different from ours. Many people read the Bible and think that the Old Testament applies directly to our society today. Not true. When Jesus came, the Old Law essentialy became no more, and the new law was to love God and love others. When Jesus was asked what are the greatest commandments, he clearly placed these two well above the others. So therefore, this defeats your claim that Christianity hasn't evolved with society, because still to this day, all we have to do is love God and love others, not avoid eating certain things or any of that. Oh and great point on how religion can't survive unless it doesnt evolve, because I mean it definitely still isnt here today after thousands and thousands of years.
