Seeing the affect on my friends and family and on me in the long term Idt I can keep pushing. I went into a pretty violent siezure. That alone is keeping me from being allowed to drive for 6 months

When you get older, and let's be honest, more intelligent, you'll realize that park skiing is an injury waiting to happen. Earning your turns on a mcgnarls face gives me a way bigger boner than some stupid fruit booting trick on a rail or jump ever did.

You get past it. It sucks, and it's hard to come to grips with, but eventually you just accept that your park rat days are over. You'll begin searching for natural features, and becoming more of a powder hound than before.

The pang of nostalgia when you see a jump line doesn't go away, but you'll feel a little less miserable when you leave the hill without having ventured into the park.

Not every thrill in skiing is gained from sailing 60ft over a man made park. While I understand where you are right now. Realize this day would have come one way or another. Whether it came from an injury or another life mile stone, Things change. A few knee injuries here, a concussion or two there, and a wife and kid that I want to be around for have changed my view on the hill. I still charge as hard as I can while remembering what is truly important in life. I feel for you but unless you were making money and fallowing skiing as a career path, things will continue to evolve in your skiing. The older I get the more I realize my old "live fast and die young" is full of shit. Sure at 20 I would have said differently but remember life will often throw you a curve or two.

I feel you. In November I also got a serious concussion, knocked myself the fuck out, broke my helmet and got a hemorragic contusion in my brain. Also broke my wrist nicely to top it off but that wasn't a big deal.

Missed three weeks of school, haven't been skiing since. I see edits and pictures of my friends skiing daily, and its painful. Hard to deal with it. I just want to get back out there. I see people complain about conditions, but I'd kill to ski icy groomers right now.
Next season I want to film a lot and ski mellow terrain and pow. I don't want a more permanent brain injury so I want to keep it trill but I miss spending time out there doing what I love with the homies

When you get older, and more intelligent, you will realise that BC skiing is death waiting to happen. Hiking a jump or a rail and getting new tricks gives me way more of a boner than any shitty, avalanche ridden BC line ever did.

I live in a maritime snowpack. I only go out on low avy condition days. I have my avy certification and know how to read a snowpack.

But hey, you live in DENMARK, a place where the snowpack is SUPER gnarly so I understand where you're coming from.

BC skiing= a LOT less harm on your body, if you're not an idiot than park skiing.

Can it be dangerous? Sure, if you're a moron. But so can park skiing, and more frequently Park skiing is more harmful on your body.

There is very little you can do to mitigate the risk of a park injury, besides what? Not falling?

Let's put it this way. You see 60+ year olds in the BC, you rarely see 30+ year olds in the park.

For real though stay in the park, all this powder sucks.

There is plenty of shit to ski besides park you just got to work for it more so than the west. Tucks if pretty damn awesome and the adirondacks I heard can be pretty good to ski as well.

This sucks, and I know that it is different for you being older and likely larger than I am, but honestly the only way for you to deal with this is get back into it. You should be careful and work up back towards your original skill level at a slowish rate, but you have to ignore your fear of pushing it and just keep on progressing. Once you do a few more seven's, it will be like you never fell.

I overshot a jump at Mammoth on my last day of the year. I feel like I had to start all over the next year as I was more afraid of overshooting than casing it.

I feel really immature. I'm 28, about to get married and I ski park as hard as I ever have, if not harder. I used to be big into powder skiing as I always skied BC in Jackson Hole every spring break, but summit county sucks for backcountry, and I've considered the avalanche risks and to me dying in an avalanche is the worst death I could imagine.

And taking falls in the park is just as fun IMO.. In powder, falling is fun because it's soft and generally not very painful. A fall in the park is often painful, but no pain no gain. At least you know you're pushing yourself

Did pretty much the same thing, except I over-rotated a 5. Collarbone shattered, cracked the side of my helmet and ended up with a mild concussion (wear helmets people).

I opted for surgery and got a plate and 7 screws in there. The week after surgery I went skiing and just cruised around with my sling on, didn't try anything close to park related.

Fast forward to this winter (13/14), I had a ridiculous mental block to hit anything in the park. Something that helped me out was starting out in the progression (small, kids etc.) park and hitting the tiniest of features.

Essentially I went into the park as if I had never ridden it before and was extra cautious. Now that it's near the end of the season I am fully confident again. Although I will say I think a lot more about the risk vs. the reward.

Cliff notes: Start small and work your confidence back up.

In the 8th grade, I broke my collarbone on a little pussy flat box 6 inches off the ground. I haven't touched a rail since and I am a junior in HS now.

I am dead serious. I barely go in the park anymore, but I hit my first real cliff this season so I got that going for me.

Good thing you're okay, brain injuries are really scary.

Progressing in skiing doesn't come without consequence, and as we g et older we really just can't afford to get injured. Just take it with a grain of salt, you may not be learning any new tricks, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun. Focus on new opportunities, different types of skiing, or filming.

Your ignorant comment on park skiing was just so, well, ignorant, that I had to try and illustrate it to through reversing your ignorant argument. You didn't get that, I'm not surprised.

Both BC and and park skiing has inherent dangers, I'm not gonna argue which one is more dangerous, because frankly I don't know. But your attempt to make BC skiing seem like child's play compared to park skiing is just so goddamn stupid it hurts.

If you were just a bit more clever, you would understand that everything is relative. If you only ski super gnarly you-fall-you-die BC lines, you are indeed much more likely to get hurt, than if you cruise around the park, hitting a rail or two and the odd jump. However, if you only ski the hardest features, biggest jumps and are constantly trying to progress and learn new tricks, then you are indeed much more likely to get hurt, than if you just ski a bit of in bounds powder under the lift.

And you're last statement, well that so perfectly illustrates your lacking comprehension of the world around you. If you don't understand what is fundamentally wrong with that statement, then you are beyond my help.

The biggest issue with the park compared to the bc is what your skiing on. In the park it's compressed snow which mean your body takes a beating on landings and when you fall.

In the bc it's powder which is much easier on the body. Yes it certainly has its dangers but in generall it's a lot easier on the body then park. I had far more injuries skiing park then powder.

So although he may not have put it across well he is in essence correct. The park does take more toll on the body then the bc but you can get seriously hurt doing either.

And op don't worry things change. I went through a similar thing. I destroyed my shoulder which kept me out for nearly two years. I'm skiing now but honestly park is much less appealing. Why risk hurting myself again and not skiing for a couple of years again. I can have just as much fun out in the powder an it does not hurt anything like as much. I still cruise through the park and try old tricks but honestly I have no desire to try to improve as I would rather be at the standard I'm at now and be able to ski, then push myself and not ski again.

dont get me wrong I fucking love skiing. Unless you are pro level then I don't think the risk is worth it!

You're going to be fine. I had a bad fall a few years ago overshooting a landing - broken collarbone, hand and a bunch of fingers. Was at the end of the season and I had all summer to get nervous about being on skis again. First 30 seconds of my first run that October I was a little freaked out. After 30 seconds it was gone - rest of the season was great.

Fast forward to this season, 5 weeks ago I broke my leg - and I did it on some stupid drop I've done a million times before with no problem - wasn't pushing it at all. Had surgery, rod down my tibia, bunch of screws. I'm in the same boat I was in a few years ago - pretty hesitant about next season. Things are different now though - I'm older, I have a 10 month old kid, so my leg screwed up work, screwed up taking care of my kid, added stress to my wife's schedule, etc. So my outlook is different - I don't care about being able to hit the park next season, I care about not fucking myself up because it impacts my family.

You're clearly younger than I am - don't stress out about the stuff you can't control right now. Your confidence will come back, and you will be back to pushing it like you were pre-accident. You might be a little bit more careful about what you're doing, or think about it a little more thoroughly - but that's okay. The key is just to not overthink things and then get hesitant, because that is when you get hurt again.

You'll be fine though - next season will start and you'll be so hyped to be out there, you'll start feeling better immediately.

yeah i have a few freinds who died in the powder but I have far more friends who had to stop skiing completely due to park injuries. So you weigh up the dangers.

I'm sorry to say, but I can find loads of people, including myself, who can tell you how they have the opposite experience of the dangers. Like I said, it's not about being right or wrong, it's about realising that both are dangerous activities, and you should expect injury at one point.

It all depends what you want to do. You can go back out and charge it or taper off. I missed a couple seasons in a row and really started off slow. Pretty much didn't throw anything I didn't know I could land, and even then started slow. Like even sliding boxes. Was mid season before I was doing much on rails. Now I've been doing a lot of my go to tricks but rarely try anything new unless I know that I'm extremely likely to land it.

If you still want to go out and charge but you're having trouble just throw on some hip hop nice and loud and cruise. Even on the groomer it'll help get your flow back. Once you get those first couple tricks in the park it feels awesome.

Do what you want. If you want to still go hard do it, but you can taper off and still have a good time if that's what you want. I gained an extra appreciation for everyday on the mountain even in bad conditions riding groomers. Just being on snow is a good day.

Ski asap! Hit jumps and get back to your old level in a relaxed way.. I once took a nasty fall while climbing and didnt climb for a few years.. Not good for confidence, not only in the mountains..

How so is it more taxing on the body? That was the question not if its overall more dangerous, as you point out its impossible to say which is overall more dangerous.

But the toll it takes on your body in undeniable. There is a reason you dont see many guys over 30 in the park. Hard icy landings are not as forgiving as a foot of pow.

I know your pain, I had a seizure and fell straight to the dome, lost the license for 6. Had to take it lowkey for a minute.

Anyway I had a pretty good smash this season, caught a ski edge to the chin. Jlev makin them edges too sharp.

This whole thing about not seeing people over 30 in the park is simply just not true. Sure we are not as plentiful as your average 16 year old, but I'm 34, still ski park, and I know plenty others my age that do the same.

And honestly, BC can take just as big a toll on the body as park, like I said before, it's all relative and depends how you ski. Why is everyone perpetuating this idea that park skiing is destroying your body? For a pro this might be true, but for your average leisure park skier, it is not as bad as people make it out to be.

You're the exception being over 30 and in the park. Don't act like it's the norm.

NO it simply doesn't. You can ski a fuck load harder in the bc (safely too) with regards to airs and drops than you can in the park if you've been injured before. Powder is a LOT more forgiving than hard park features and typically the hard snow that comes with the park.

To quote a few words:

"His body couldn't handle the park anymore so he went into the powder"

Well when you think about it youve been doing this for ten years and youve gotten hurt bad once, so unless your still doing park at age 31 you shouldnt be worried about having this happen again. statistically spaking. and if you do decide to park ski again you cant always be worried about falling again that will just make it worse
