A little oil is the least of the concerns given what has been dumped into Lake Michigan over the past 20 years or so. Not to mention all the chems and waste those factories are still dumping into the lake. Get caught dumping, pay the big fine to a corrupt state, resume dumping until fined again. It's a never ending cycle.

So a metric ton is 1000kg

Crude Oil Density = 873 kg / cubic meter
1 cubic meter = 264.172 gallons
1 barrel of oil = 42 gallons
42 gallons * (1 cubic meter / 264.172 gallons) = .15898 cubic meters / barrel
.15808 cubic meters / barrel * (873 kg /cubic meter) = 138.8 kg / barrel of oil


138.8 kg/barrel * 39 barrels = 5413.2kg of oil.

5413.2kg of oil/1000


So, ~5.5 tons of oil.

I believe a "Metric Fuck ton" is 10 metric tons... so about half a fuck ton.

spills of this size happen all the time in Canada and are rarely, if ever, reported.

I'd be more concerned about that ongoing spill in southern US that's been going since 2004 spilling somewhere around 15 gallons a day into the Gulf. That starts to add up fast. And the fact that it's been ongoing for 10 years now is pretty pathetic.

I'm pretty sure it's required by Canadian government to report all spills and I'm pretty sure that the amount that isn't a recordable is significantly lower than 1500 gallons. From my experience spills companies follow these laws very strictly. They also clean them up according to very strict standards

Haha no doubt, kinda thought they would have been doomed after their little episode in the gulf.

Some what relevant: I was working at a big bitumen upgrader for one of the largest oil companies about 5 years ago and was at work on a Sunday for weekend coverage. Greenpeace broke into the plant site and climbed a bunch of towers and hung banners about climate change from them.
I listened to the whole fiasco on the security channel, security guards were instructed to not chase them, in fact they brought them coats and pizza when they were cold and hungry. The news helicopter came but was instructed to fuck off before they got close enough for pictures. Once they turned themselves in they were not arrested, their vehicle that they used was towed outside the gate and given back to them. We tried to find any news coverage of it for days and found nothing, not on TV, internet or print. Only coverage was on the greenpeace website. I was very surprised at how they handled the situation and by how little coverage there was.

the problem is truly we can't change anything about this because we live off oil... as long as we stay oil dependent these kinds of things will occur and as long as it gets cleaned up then its just another incident.. the oil business shouldn't change if anything we need to start to become dependent on something other than oil.

kidding, but I doubt it, the lake has a lot of lunar movement and weve had above freezing temps for a bit now(and if you consider the impurities of the lake), im sure there are a lot of places that are frozen on the lake tho
