Guys we need to get smart here... this is a super sick opportunity and we can actually come up with something cool - that isn't a crazy amount of work. We have the talent, so lets brainstorm a bit.

The main key to think of when brainstorming a feature that can be pulled off with a park crew is that super steep landings are out, unless you can cut them with a dragon (or zaugg or whatever).

Big piles like takeoffs, decks and landings are easy. With a shoot you can get creative with the shape of that because you don't have to maintain it long term. Hips and spines are out because you need to hand bomb them to be good with a fucking army.

What about a massive old school channel gap? Anyone remember US open in like 2006 when they did that?

I think you're right about the hip being a fuck ton of work, unfortunately. A channel jump was next on our list. Are you a fan of the one takeoff, two landings or dual take offs/landings (basically two tables with a gap between them)

Well the 'easiest' way to do this - as long as you have the snow - is to build one absolutely massive table - and just cut it in half. The problem here is that you need to build this insanity wide, or each takeoff/landing will be super small. I forget the minimum blade width of a cat, something like 18' or 20'. So you need to have the space to have takeoffs ideally that are 20' wide on either side of that. so build a 60'-80' wide lip, the deck to support that (which will be anywhere from 2-3X that width and then plow a channel through the center.

All things considered, a bunch of really good trail groomers can push up that pile pretty easily, park crew has to help shape the lip, and then polish the channel once its cut - but in the grand scheme of things for a shoot-ready feature its not horrible.

The main issues I faced when looking at channel gaps was run width and quantity of snow available.

TL;DR - dual takeoffs/landings all the way.

You can only build so big of a hip to a zaugg landing. Its great and steep with perfect shape, but its super duper short.

If you're talking about those mega hips like in the movies, these things are probably 50' of transition on the landing - the zaugg only cuts 22' at best.

Zaugg is perfect for smaller sweet trannies.

One feature that caught my eyes over the years was the super steep takeoff/landing but short distance true table, there was one in a level one movie around the time mike Clarke was in them and Tom whallisch was fairly new on the scene, may have been turbo? Ahmet rodeo 9s it. I know it has steep takeoff and landing but might not have to be as long as a hip and should be easier to build. Hell you could even cut it into a gap.

We do have access to a zaugg, and overall, I'm not sure we were looking to go mega fucking big, due to who will be hitting it (rad shredders, but not 50' out of a hip rad), and budget/time/snow constraints.

I feel like sitting down with the park crew/cat operators and the people who are going to be riding the features would be the easiest way to do it.

The people there understand what the snow situation is and how much they're willing to move and shape. The people who are going to hit it, what kind of features they want so that they'll be stoked and kill it for some shots.

Less features that are built better is a huge + over more features that are kind of meh. One big jump and a rail setup of sorts but get everything looking perfect so the shots look good.

That would be a big ass channel then. Super pipes are over 60ft wide I believe, so the channel would be larger than the jump distance. The channel probably wouldn't be much more than a cat pass wide (18ft) I would think.

I think it would be cool to cut the lips so you can cut a QP in the front face of the landing and then QP it, so you have a QP channel as well. Not sure if this would work, would probably depend on how the landing/pile is made.

The first thing I did when I got the assignment was go and talk to those guys. They jumped on the idea so fast and seemed to be more ambitious than I was, even with the fact that they know there isn't a huge budget. So I guess I'll get a few rider's opinions, and do some stuff in google sketchup!

I can't be the only one that remembers this! Either a year or two years before I got into park Haywire had a killer set up at the end, they had a decent sized stair set with a rail on one side and a box on the other and a dance floor to the right. I've only seen it once, so I'm not really sure if it's reffered to as "the urban set up" or if it even still exists Ill try and find an edit with it

I thought came into my head...basically combine a channel jump and Karl's PBP feature from WE. Basically a channel table top jump (1 kicker, 2 landings), but the front of the channels are quarterpiped so you could do redirects on them...and it's safer cause if you go over the top you don't die.

Or stemming from that idea, make a big step down with a pyramid to air over with one side painted as Sugarloaf.
