Posting edits to instagram

When posting an edit to instagram, how do you reformat it so that your aspect ratio is scaled down, instead of cropped off?

I'm trying to accomplish this:

I made the edit in imovie (don't hate) and I don't think you are able to do that.

Try using whitagram, it's an iphone app, it works with photos and might with videos.

You just need to create a 720x720 sequence and then scale down your video so that it fits in the box and then drop a white background in bellow the video. Super easy in preimere/fcp not sure about imovie

Make the edit in Imovie 15 seconds or shorter, Export it and email it to yourself. If you have an Iphone download Squarereadyvideo and just upload it to instagram after.

Meh, that aspect is wayyyy too small for an iPhone screen. I always edit IG vids in a 1x1 sequence so the video fills the whole thing.

Not to thread hyjack. Every time I bring in a clip from Premier to Instagram it always gives me a not compatable error. Is their a certain file type that they want to be for this? Mind you I am using a Google Nexus 4

Unfortunately I think this is just a problem with the android system. MP4 is always your safest bet I believe, but I constantly got the same error as well.

LOLOLLLL Don't do any of that, suuuper long route for insta vid uploads.

Get SquareReadyVideo, it's same app that allows you to throw in full frame 16:9 photos with the bars for photo but it does it for video. You can choose from 1:1 to 16:9 along whole spectrum. I believe it costs $$ but super worth it, any videographer I know that posts video uses it.

Exporting an instagram video takes two minutes and every videographer I know does it that way...

Pumping your already compressed video through more compression from a shitty phone ap and then into instagram for MORE compression seems like a poor idea. Plus if it costs money, its not worth it at all.

Yeah I have been trying to get it to work for ages and its a renown for not allowing a 3rd party post. Its just mildly infuriating.

search squaredy video and download app
white bar that video
it will not get cropped at all now

This is a picture question not edit question but since this thread is for instagram thought it would be the place. I'm trying to upload a still to instagram and I resized the image and canvas size like most sites say to do, 612 pixels but it leaves room above and below the image that pisses me off. Example here at the bottom of this tutorial.http://davidnew.net/site/2013/11/20/resizing-your-photos-for-instagram/
As seen in this tutorial theres a black outline under and ontop of the pic and I dont want that. Any way to do this when I resize the image or do I have to have the background around it?
