Moguls; The Common Park Skier's Worst Nightmare

For years i have been observing skiers slaying it in the park, and then struggling like gapers in moguls. The skiers of today, are not what they were in the past, skill in mid air has replaced the skill on the hill. I blame the culture that we live in today; a culture where skiers are judged by one aspect of their skiing. Skiers these days simply don't respect their roots. If you can't ski moguls than how are we suppose to take you seriously as a skier. Snowboarders certainly share a large portion of this blame as well, because they can't shred moguls, without butchering the shit out of them. To combat this appalling epidemic, i propose we form moguls on every booter and every landing in every park, and on every mountain. All you mogul haters should be ashamed and embarrassed. But to all the fellow shredders that can still slay moguls, i salute you, pray that the future generations revert to the ways of old!

I wouldnt wanna be like Radio Ron taking 50 different supplements just to go bash some bumps for 2 months of the year.

No disrespect to Ron, I'm just not nearly as badass as him.

like someone else mentioned earlier. It is very rare that I am able to ski a good zipper line. Most of the mogul runs that I end up skiing have no flow to them. Huge moguls that are all over the place. Making it very hard to get into a good flow of turns and bumps. How is anyone supposed to rip down that is beyond me, or my abilities.
So skiing car sized moguls, that are all over the place = no fun for me. Can i ski them? Yes, not well though. I would love to take a lesson on how to ski in conditions like that.

i like skiing moguls and carving fast groomers too. however, i can only afford one pair of skis, so i buy park skis.

I can ski well, and aggressively, but skiing all-mountain and skiing park are almost two COMPLETELY different sports. One person may be great at one while suck at another, as with any other combination of sports. Technically they're both skiing, but each style requires different aspects of athleticism in order to succeed. I know I personally SUCK at park, but can handle a vast majority of anything the mountain throws at me. While I know other kids who KILL the park, but would be extremely sketched out by skiing glades.

But who cares?? Anyone who sees a person shredding one or the other is like, "holy shit, thats badass."

I'm 15 and dress like a total newschooler and and almost always in the park, but still the bumbs are fun as fuck, but the real shit is the glades, yaya. One thing I hate though is the hardo mogul skiers with that use those gay mogul skis.

I love moguls, as an east coaster, whenever i get up north love steep mougley trails, back in CT i make sure to take at least a couple mogul runs in a day

The biggest thing is that mountains rarely maintain mogul fields the way they used to (hand shapers), and ski lengths are much shorter than they were back in the hotdogger days. Long skis leads to well formed zipper lines, short skis - not so much. No rad bump lines means its way less fun to rip it. I will still jump at the opportunity to shred a mogul course.

mogul runs are probably one of my favorite park runs. Finding tranny is incredibly fun and pressing your skis with the moguls is tricky. I've been trying to get a switch mogul run down.

I grew up skiing moguls with my dad and still love them to this day. Few things are more satisfying to me than a perfect zipper line. I started park a while ago but still do moguls regularly.

What he is referring to, anyone that cannot ski rails should never be able to ski in the park and be forced to rebuild Leos shack and be imprisoned by the gnomes that dwell in the area. The only way to get out is to go down on those gnomes 10 deep.

I don't think moguls are that fun. I have way more fun taking park laps than skiing moguls. They're nice for a little change of pace. Warm spring laps with corn snow down open bowls are great though. Used to always hop in the gondola at Mammoth and then lap down through the park.

'It's not that you can't ski moguls, it's that you can't ski and the moguls prove it.' Not one aspect of the mountain will improve your technique more than trying to rip down some bumps. Get that down and nothing will hold you back.

My hill recently set up a poor excuse for moguls and those are so fun hahaha as noobish as this is, I hit the last mogul and do a spread eagle...

I grew up watching Jean-luc brassard kill the mogul scene in the 90's. Most of my early childhood memories are in the moguls.
To be the best skier, you have to equally ski well in every aspect of the sport. Moguls are just a part of skiing, like fucking rails and gate bashing.

Have you ever skied midwest "moguls"? Notice the quotation marks. The moguls in Wisconsin are absolute shit. They are mounds of pure ice that were formed by pushing man made snow around until the crew is happy with there shape. I love skiing moguls out west or even in upper Michigan because get this there made of real snow. That id why i never ski moguls

center mounted nordica dead moneys.. and no issue in the bumps. I also use to have dynastar concepts mounted "traditional" back in 1998 and had no issues hitting jumps or rails.

must be skier error.

i hate to say it but i agree to an extent. i would say the park skiers that suck at moguls are the ones who only hit rails in parks and not jumps. they have a hard time out of the park even carving. Come on guys! work on those turns and form when hitting the trail that leads to the park!

If you wanna be a park skier, ski park.

If you wanna be an overall bawss and rip every part of the mountain, then become a badass, all mountain skier. Mastering every aspect of skiing is awesome and props to those that do that, but it's hard and pretty rare...especially these days.

Watching people like Delorme and Candide, who are as comfortable in moguls as they are in the park, is pretty fucking awesome though. So hopefully we still see more of rad, well-rounded skiers and less " I know how to 450 onto a rail but can't ski the mountain" skiers.

Moguls are sick, i used to compete in bumps (poorly,) but who gives a shit if kids can still shred bumps super well? There's tons of other fun stuff to do on the mountain. I love me a good zipper line, but i would rather shred pow or the park any day

I've never skied moguls. There are none on either of my home mountains so I've never learned. I did however compete in ski racing for a few years so I do have "skills on the hill". To me it would seem that proper knowledge of how to turn on your edges and maintain speed on flat (flat=not moguls) surfaces is more relevant to a park skier than the ability to get through a series of bumps without breaking your neck or fucking up your knees.

But as I said I have literally no experience of skiing moguls so I can't really relate to what it does for your technique.

East coast moguls are a joke, closer to hockey than skiing. That being said, at Killington in the spring there's nothing better than soft bumps in between ganjala runs.

I'm a park rat, I only ever leave the park 2 or 3 times a year to shred some POW. But I never complain when I come across some moguls. I used to train that shit when I was younger now I love a good zipper line every now and again.

I have a pair of 189 Seth Pistols I got almost 6 years ago for super cheap ($100 practically nothing wrong with them). Amazing pow ski, but knew I'd be in the east for the next long while so 90% of the time I'd be skiing hard pack. Decided I'd mount them at 1.5 cm back from centre so they'd be great in the park but can still charge powder when needed.

They SUCK on tight icy moguls like no other. Can ski moguls fine on other skis or can ski larger radius moguls with no ice fine on them. But for what you find 3/4 of the time around where I am moguls are the worst.
