banksy's an overhyped vandal anyway, graffiti isn't meant to be permanent, it gets sprayed over all the time. but still wack that someone would spray just to fuck it up

lol not at all. he tagged it up during sundance i think the year his movie was in the festival. tourists just gawk at it mostly. but the city did put that glass frame thingy over it. so it does have some sort of value to the city i guess.

Alot of people do this to try to conserve his art since now he has put alot of it on the market. His peices sell for insane amounts so when he tags a wall it turns the wall into a prized possession thats worth a lot of money.

lesbehonest, even if you don't love his shit it is worth $, and is well respected in the art world, however part of the street art game is the fact that its temporary. That being said, fuck the people who ruined this. If you're going to tag over something part of the unwritten rule is you should have to, meaning you're planning a piece that is big and requires that space or its in such a prime spot there is no better option, and if youre going to spray over a good piece you're piece better also be good. Banksy's stuff is art, whether you agree with the morality of it or not. And that shit over it is not art, its some highschool fagboys ruining a good piece. Park City shouldn't protect his shit with glass, its not meant to be permanent, but human beings should be smart enough to realize what they are ruining.

The funny thing about art is how subjective it is. Pretty much anything can be considered art. I personally don't find there to be anything spectacular about some "artist" who spraypaints buildings, so I don't give a shit if somebody else painted over it. Maybe this act of "vandalism" is actually a brilliant piece of art demonstrating the irony of spraybombing buildings and calling it art. How can it be considered vandalism if the "art" that was there in the first place is vandalism?

After a quick Google search, it appears that painting is worth about 9 million dollars. According to you, it would not be art. In fact, I'm pretty sure I could draw a soup can better than that. Am I an artist? Should my shitty notebook sketches be worth millions?

Banksy is overhyped. People only like it cause of the name backing the art. Some person was selling banksy pieces that were authentic for like $40 on the street but no one knew they were banksy. Not very many sold. People don't appreciate the art, they appreciate the worth due to the hype. I mean, some of it is neat and has some interesting underlying metaphorical inferences, but... So much art these days is lame. I took an art class at my university and it seemed like a faculty for people who can't cut it in the other programs. They all pretended to see inspiration in the dumbest shit like it was some sixth sense. To give an example, there was a broken microphone stand on the last lecture, and no one was sure whether it was someone's art project or a broken microphone stand... Rediculous. We spent one class talking about this one piece of art. It was a trail in some grass that was like 15 feet long. The instructors thought it was amazing, "this man walked back and forth in the grass to create this line!". Needless to say that I was disliked by my instructors after they read my journal, "Picasso, Micheal Angelo, Da Vinci, etc would be embarrassed that you attempt to associate profession with them." I get that everything is art. But man, these people get so friggin duped into thinking art is amazing because oft eh artist who created it. Either way, I do like some of banksys stuff, shame End rant

This is stupid as shit.

Don't get me wrong, I respect Banksy as a tagger and "street artist" but the whole point of graffiti is that it's all transitory. The idea behind it, at least to me, is that anyone at any time can come up to your piece and hack it out, no matter how beautiful you or somebody else thinks it is. And that's also the beauty of it. it's that you have to appreciate it in the moment knowing that someone is inevitably going to ruin it and it's gonna be gone forever.  I think someone already said it in this post but look at banksy and robbo/team robbo going at it all over the place. Another good example is psycho city in San Francisco, if any of you have heard of it. Some of the most BEAUTIFUL and most influential pieces that had a huge impact on me when I was younger got covered up never to be seen again.

Is it shitty? Yeah. Does it kinda make me mad that a guy who is such a genius with a spray can and stencils had his work defiled? Yeah. Am I pissed that I can't go down to psychocity and piece things up like I used to without being charged as a gang member by cops? Fuck yeah. But that's just the way things go. It's really too bad that a few toy ass PC kiddies came in and fucked it up with spray they bought with their mom's credit cards. But appreciate the few times you got to see his pieces in PC and move on. There'll always be more art to make, figures of authority to taunt, and more kids coming up who I guarantee will create something equally as thought-provoking and creative as Banksy has.

Move on. It's just graffiti. Jeez.

street art is temporal. I'm pretty sure Banksy would be stoked about the guy breaking the glass. anyone who wants graff to be permanently on display is delusional.

I also find it funny that park city decided that this white, gentrified, british version of street art gets a glass protective cover while classic graff is for sure covered up immediately.

That's exactly my point. If it wasn't Andy Warhol's work, everyone would laugh and say, "that shitty painting of a soup can isn't art." If Banksy wasn't e-famous, nobody would give a shit about some mediocre spray paint on the side of a building. It's just hype for a name. His "art" is no more important than the guy's who painted over it. People only care about the name. It reminds me of the famous violinist who played in some train station with a multi-million dollar violin while dressed as a hobo. Nobody even gave him a second glance. Two nights before the experiment he sold out a concert hall at 100+ bucks a seat. Sort of different, but just goes to show people care more about a name than the actual art.

News flash if you have already established yourself as a famous artist your stuff is worth more than some persons. Face it people they were banksys and the one on main street makes a clear statement about making movies in a place where Sundance happens. Its just too bad some tool bag was jealous and fucked that one up.

Its great violinists dress up as hobos and play great music but what are the odds someone that appreciates your music is walking by while you are playing ? Its a lot easier to buy a ticket to go to a concert and know you are going than to stop and listen while you are rushing home from work.

It wasn't just spray-painting over spray-paint... The city put up large metal frames and glass to preserve the paintings. Even if you don't respect Banksy as an artist you can at least respect that the city put some value in it. The guy shattered the glass on the frame in order to cover the pieces..
