there's two charging stations at stevens pass, at the front of the closest lot to the lifts. it costs $0 to charge your vehicle. yes, we are giving away the electricity AND the best parking spots.

they never get used, even in the summer

The coal industry has a strong hold on the industry though. Yeah their are alternatives. Why are you picking on highschoolers anyway? That makes ya look dumb..

You are referencing an extremely small percentage of where electricity comes from. For all intents and purposes, it's coal.

Depends on the country really, France is hot for nuclear. In the Netherlands it's natural gas they love.

But coal usually represents a big chunk in almost every country.

Or solar. Solar is very reasonable. We just got solar set up and we're selling back to the grid. Solar isn't a bad option at all. Just role with it and in a few years we will be able to afford solar

I've been to the Tesla factory in Fremont, cool place. The car on the other hand, not so much. Build quality is meh, interior is meh. Over the life of the car you'd be much better off buying an E-class or 5-series.

I hate how people try and tout the "green" aspects of electric cars, the chassis is filled with toxic batteries that really can't be 100% recycled, are horrible for the environment, and have a relatively short life span. Same goes for hybrids.

Hydrogen powered cars use even more electricity. How do you think they get hydrogen atoms alone? They get water and apply electricity to split it into hydrogen and oxygen where they can isolate them and put them in containers. It uses way more electricity (which is made from coal for the most part) than a regular battery powered electric car.

Governments, Big oil and car companies will never solve these issues. Independent researches like myself and some of my friends have obtained over-unity and the harnessing of aetheric energy waves. but nothing above a kilowatt yet. (good enough for something stationary or small but not a 4 bedroom house or a vehicle).
Inventors like Nikola Tesla, Viktor Schauberger, Otis T. Carr and many others suceeded at tapping this unlimited energy source roughly 100 years ago. I believe this is the future of energy.
Right now to avoid paying for oil I have my Diesel truck has 3 fuel tanks, diesel, waste vegetable oil and water. and it gets nearly double its original mileage. We have fooled ourselves into thinking we need fossil fuels.

You're right that coal is still by far the biggest source of electricity, but it's not quite as dominant as a lot of people think.

Xcel in CO was at 17% wind/solar at the end of 2011, and is expecting to be 28% by 2020.

That said, other initiatives will boost that number as governments and other companies take more of the market share, ie Boulder's big ordeal with the municipal energy thing. Even china is only 70% coal, and takes 80% of the worlds solar hot water systems.

It seems like people really tend to underestimate the progress that has already been made in the whole renewable energy world. There's a long way to go, but progress is definitely being made.

until we can power trains, cargo ships, long haul trucks, and aircraft with waste grease from arbys or electeicity we will need fossil fuels

What you are neglecting to consider is the efficiency differences between the fossil fuels burned in a car vs at a plant to create electricity. In most cases, steam turbines are used and have a relatively high efficiency rate when it comes to actual electrical output from the potential energy in the fuels (Around 50-60% efficiency) whereas burning those fuels in your car's internal combustion motor produces somewhere around 20-25% efficiency. The difference is that electric power plants have turbines that are large enough to create higher efficiency, but such equipment is far too big and expensive to be in a car.

tl;dr: Electric cars still use largely fossil fuel - based electricity, it is just using it much more efficiently.

My gasoline powered car is still more eco-friendly than a tesla. Or pretty much any electric car out there. And living in Norway, which is cold as fuck in the winter, those batteries will need to be replaced relatively often.
