poetry =/= spoken word


as someone who writes poetry i'm not quite a fan of spoken word stuff. some of it can be incredibly moving, but most of it just makes me want to punch the person. spoken word is simply stressing certain syllables and words in order to accentuate the meaning of what you're saying. it's much less about word choice and diction than written poetry is.

yes yes i know, people who do spoken word write it down first so TECHNICALLY it is poetry, but it's poetry that is created with the speaking in mind much less than the actual writing.

but before i get shit on, that was very powerful. that's one of the few spoken word pieces i've enjoyed. what i said above usually applies to people doing spoken word about race or political issues.
