I wouldn't say it's championships as much as there not being an excuse for any of teams not to perform. Great teams and great cities fall short every year. You can't measure your worth truly from the amount of trophies you have or stars aligning even though boston has been dominating (and falling short) on that front in the 10-12 years.

There are expectations in boston all year round for all teams, not an, oh shit, the teams in first place, let's pay attention now.

Meh. It's hard to really tell with Detroit. The Tigers D logo is a huge symbol of the city and I feel like way more people identify it as the city than the sports. Sure It happens with sox hats and yankee hats but it just on a completely different level in detroit.

Chicago does great things and there is a lot of excitement about all of the teams but then there is the cubs. The cubs are such a blackspot to a great sports city. They're completely written off and are kind of that taboo that no one wants to bring up.

It gets ulgy basing a sports city off of 2-3 nhl teams, 2 nba teams, 2 nfl teams, and 2 baseball teams. I like to pass those up. So much this or that in cities with multiple teams of the same sport. There's excitement for most of those teams but there isn't the same unity as Boston or Phili

yeah, but sometimes it creates good inter-city rivalries, like the clippers and the lakers. But when 1 team is always wayyyy better than the other (Yankee's/Mets, White Sox/Cubs) it does kind of take away from one strong fanbase. Like the Seahawks. Or the Sonics (fuck you Stern. No one wants a team in Sacramento).

Boston has good teams but is full of fair weather fans that crucify any player that leaves the team. I bet Boston will bue Wes Welker when he comes back and that just proves the fans are fucking morons.

I'd say Philly is a pretty awesome sports town. One of the fewer cities with 4 major sports teams and each team is usually at least in the thick of it in terms of playoffs.

If you look at the best town as a combination of success and how good the fans/purely how important sports are to the city then the top 3 has to be some order of Philly, Chicago, and Boston. New York and LA have both been very successful, but LA fans just aren't that great, and New York just has too many teams to have the same passionate fanbase as seen in places like Boston, Philly, or Chicago.

As a Bostonian born and bred, I'm obviously partial to Boston, but, at least for me, it's a toss up between Philly, Chicago, and Boston.

Idk dude. Comerica park sells out multiple nights a week, the joe sold out almost very night and the lions packed ford field during the 0-16 season. Sold it out before then too and after. I'm partial to Detroit cause I was born and raised so it explains the bias but Boston and Philly without a doubt along with chi-town are the top sports cities. New York but they have pretty fake fanbases with all the teams.

Just so we're clear...this isn't about what city has the "Best Teams", or a conversation about titles in major sports by cities. It's about quality of its fans, their passion AND knowledge (I'm sorry, but you DO have to have a really solid understanding of sports to be a serious fan), the cities' traditions, sports culture, and sports' relative importance to that city's residents lives.

In which case, i'd suggest portland, since not only do they sell out a 19000+ seat arena every game for a mediocre basketball team, but they go cracked out for soccer and you can't even get a ticket to a match.

Atmosphere at Portland sporting events is absolutely insane, and Im not even a fan of any portland teams...

Seattle's pretty good too, considering they haven't won a championship with any team since 1979... which was by a team that no longer plays in Seattle...


I wouldn't throw Boston or Chicago or New York in the mix at all. Too many bandwagon fans who just jump on the big city teams, or claim their family is from there, or some other kook shit.

los angeles and the surrounding area has a ton of sports teams and several that are really good. the kings won a cup last year, the galaxy killed it with beckham, the clippers and lakers are pretty big, lots of baseball in LA and anaheim, and even football is just down in san diego

it's definitely a place i'd like to be when it comes to big time sports action. there, and new york or boston.

but if you really want passion in a sports community, i'd have to put the carolinas up there. ncaa sport is huge there, and in driving through a few times it was absolutely ridiculous how many colleges and major stadiums they have. i'd never seen anything like it.

Packers fans are the fucking worst. If you can't name 3 starting packers other than Aaron Rodgers, you're not a fan.

Actually thats kind of my bandwagon test with any team. If you don't know any players on your favorite team other than the superstars, you're probably not a fan.

But the question isn't which FAN BASE, it's which CITY. Bandwagoners don't make the fans who are actually from Chicago or Boston any worse. Anytime you are successful you are going to have bandwagoners, it's not fair to say "oh, Boston just won a championship, their fans must suck now"

Ill honestly have to say Seattle. Soccer hasn't been mentioned once in this thread, but the turnouts for the Sounders games are unreal. As dingo mentioned above, sure we haven't won something big since '79, I believe? And that was with the supersonics, but with that it doesn't seem to phase Seattle fans. I didn't even mention the Seahawks games, which are historically the loudest football games in the states. Like Richter scale measures and all. Just my two cents though!

Pretty much any sec college town is pretty nuts, I was able to catch a 2 games down south, one in Athens and one in Gainesville, shit was pretty crazy.

Boston for sure, people stand behinds the teams at their absolute worst and love them anyways. Also 98.5 is the best radio station for sports in the world.

Also with the bandwagon stuff. I was at the Mariners game vs the Yankees in Seattle back in July of last year. Let just say everyone at the stadium and around Seattle was wearing Yankees gear.

Finally someone said it. Listen folks I have been to sports events all over the place. I don't really like any Pitt teams but I just recently moved to Pitt. This place is CRAZY over their teams. Steelers, Pens, Pirates. Doesn't matter. No matter where you go around here the sports are there and in your face.

Sure there are plenty of band-wagoners here in Pitt. Hell just look at the hockey fans who couldn't have been bothered in the early and mid 90's to watch a crazy good hockey team, but now they have Crosby everyone is the "biggest Pens fan." Sadly, most of these folks couldn't name a quarter of the teams in the league. However, with all that being said this city is crazy for its sports teams. Pro, college, even HS gets big coverage around here.
