Shit's going down up here. Hundreds of thousands affected, 25 communities have been evacuated in Calgary. Surrounding towns have it worse.

There's no looting, everywhere where this is going on the roads are shut down and there are emergency personnel and cops all over the place.

Seriously though, that freakin sucks. You can never understand the power of water until you see it take away literally everything. The damage is just overwhelming, and humanity gets out of hand quick when there's no utilities, communication or sense of order or an ability to move about. I really hope this situation ends soon and nobody gets killed.

I just want to know where they've evacuated the zoo animals to. Initially I heard the courthouse holding cells but apparently that is false. Where can you put an elephant?

the whole city is built on a hill though so most of the water rushed down into the lake. looks like you guys were hit a bit harder.

Nah the peace bridge should be fine. It's solid and I think the river has peaked. I'm posting this from the 14th street bridge and it is raging. Glad I moved last week, my old building was evacuated.

Its definitely pretty gnarly, however I can safely assume officials have overreacted to the situation. Police helicopters were circling neighborhoods, ordering them to evacuate immediately. I suppose Albertan's just aren't as prepared for this sort disaster as other cities in Canada would be, which led to such strife and panic

My parents are fucked right now. They just finished up building a new house in Elboya and what do you know the thing is underwater haven't even lived in it for a week. Not to mention its still fucking raining.
I really hope the dam doesn't break, cuz in like 08 or when ever the last flood was I heard people talking about seeing pieces of the dam floating down the river. I hope they fixed the dam properly.

It's pretty crazy, Calgary is getting hit hard and there's been some evacuation notices in Red eer too, hope everyone is ok.

My buddy is working at Fairmont Banff Springs. He was supposed to get on a plane back to Ontario so we could party at his cabin this weekend. Now no partying for me. I have clearly been affected worse than the others in this situation.

I dunno, my coworker was told to leave and within a couple hours there were 6ft of water at his house. The basement, and garage are completely submereged and most of the first floor is fucked. Plus the slope they're on is unstable and the entire complex might get swept into the river. Doesn't sound like an overreaction to me.

Yes there has been extensive water damage, and thousands of citizens have been evacuated. However the situation would be much worse if there was sewage outbreaks, or power plant failures. If it gets to that point (which I doubt it will) then I can justify the police promoting the added stress and anxiety. That's typical Calgary police force, they tend to make big shows out of every circumstance they can

Sorry to hear, Alberta folks. Hope you guys have flood insurance. I'm guessing most probably don't though, which is super shitty.

I can certainly relate. Living on the water, I have to come and go via boat several times a year. Fortunately, my house is raised high enough that water doesn't actually get inside. I just can't get to the house except by boat.

It turns out that building your multimillion dollar mansion on a floodplain is a bad idea and hard to insure. Who knew?

I've heard from a city employee there's a good chance electricity and water will be cut for the whole city tonight. They've been pumping water out of the treatment centre since last night.

Shred Kelly was supposed to play in Revelstoke tonight but they're stuck in Calgary, so no show. I was also supposed to go on a rafting trip Saturday - Monday but the friend who is in charge is also stuck in Calgary with no way of getting across the boarder into BC and the rafting company doesn't want anyone on the river due to the amount of water, so that's cancelled too.

Got a few friends stranded in Canmore as well.

I live in Discovery ridge, one of the first communities in Calgary to get hit. Some had to evacuate yesterday but some of the people stayed until today. They cut the power off, and now it's a shitshow. Anyone else have some expirences? Oh and there was about an hour long line at every Safeway in Calgary, and all of downtown is shut down. Plus the saddledome is flooded 18 rows high.

It doesn't matter so much how much it rains in Calgary as in the mountains. All 200mm that fell on Canmore flows right into the Bow, not to mention all the other places seeing rain that drain right into downtown.

And Sean we never see this. The last bad flood was in '05 and this is way worse, worst flood in the history of the Province. By the time it's all said and done it will be one of the worst natural disasters in Canadian history.

Yeah dude we live up top so there wasn't too much damage. But they knocked the power off at 9 so we had to leave to charge our phones and stuff. We're going back tomorrow tho, so ill take pictures to see.

Zoo has a ranch out of town where some will/have been moved, some to shelters in town and most to higher ground on the property. There are lots of small cells in the animal hospital and areas that the flood will hopefully not touch. I personally can't see the elephants or hippos being moved. Water levels where I was working are slowly going down, although still plenty of rain in the mountains flowing towards us.

My brothers up in Ranch Ridge so he's fine, but I have an aunt and uncle and some cousins who live in High River and their house is under water. It's absolutely devastating. This whole thing is just beyond words.

Just a friendly reminder to my fellow Calgarians to check your road closures before you try and drive anywhere... I decided to be a stupid idiot and wound up getting stuck on crowchild for like 35 minutes going northbound between 33rd and 17th.


Vibes to those of you who had to evacuate, hope your homes are safe and sound.

Yup while most people decided to stock up on water we filled our fridge with beer and get the lego r2d2 to build. So far it's been an afternoon of disney movies and drinking games so we're doing okay. Not sure how many people will be crashing with us, we had two extras last night.
