if i was the 911 operator i would be going nuts just screaming at this fucking lady. what a twisted world we live in that they would rather literally watch her die than risk breaking company policy, and that people can get sued for trying to help but not for sued for just letting her die on the ground

Are you fucking kidding me? Why would it be a nursing homes policy to not give CPR? How could any self respecting human being stand by and be repeatedly told that you have the power to save someones life, and simply say no like that? You can find another job for Christs sake, you cant take someone back from the dead. Its this fucked up business side of the medical field that really gets me going. Capitalism is influencing our countries medical decisions and it isn't right. This is just another classic example.

As a studying nurse, I would have happily saved this woman's life and lost my job. Not even a hard decision. It makes me sick to think that there are people out there who would be so selfish.

What kind of human being would let something like a bullshit facility policy get in the way of saving someones life? It saddens me that there are people in the world like the nurse in this 911 call, she cares more about not breaking the rules at her job then saving someones life.

The patient was unconscious its presumed that the patient wants help. They throw this bullshit at my work to and I'm not allowed to touch anyone or give any advice while on the clock even though I have medical training. I will however act upon someone in need if they are in serious trouble.

I know, I posted it in another thread, but I was a lifeguard the last 3 summers and we can do cpr and stuff, but they get anal about lifejackets. We cant touch them because if we put them on wrong and they drown we get raped by insurance.

The patient was a documented DNR - read: DO NOT RESUSCITATE.

If the caretaker would have performed CPR, there could have been legal ramifications. The family was ok with this and expected it. The media is blowing it out of proportion. This happens all the time. The only reason 911 was contacted was because they believed the pt was responsive at first.

The ladies family isnt mad and no charges were filed. The only people who care are the media because this story riles people up. The old lady went out and is at peace rather then being in pain w a buncha broken ribs and living in the pain from having her body beat on. A lot of people in those nursing homes are there to die as sad as it seems and some times a death like this is a blessing in disguise...im sure her family feels this way hence why they are not pissed off and suing

FYI - you won't be sued for doing CPR if the patient dies. Even if they did everything right (quick defib, etc.) the chance of surviving an out of hospital cardiac arrest is about 8%. The chance of surviving without brain damage is less than half that. Given that this person was in a nursing home (meaning, old and frail), the chance of a good outcome is likely even less than that.

She went to this place knowing she wouldnt receive any medical attention. In fact, the home has no medical personnel on staff. The old lady wanted to live in a place where she could die of natural causes without anyone trying to save her, thus prolonging her (assumed) suffering.

 The lady who said she was a nurse is still an idiot for calling 911 in the first place. If the lady wanted to die, then there is no need to contact the authorities and bring this whole event to the public eye. Dumbass.

I understand the dnr but the way the nurse acted just made me really pissed off. The way she talked and the fact that she wasnt emotional at all standing over a woman as she dies.

I didn't read the article posted. It was my understanding (and still is) that the pt was a DNR. Whether or not this was actually on file with her ECF is a different story. The family has publicly stated that they wished for no heroic measures to be taken to resuscitate the patient. That's what a DNR is. There are plenty of patients who come through the ER where I work that have no DNR "paperwork" on file, but the family's wishes have been verbally expressed and subsequently documented in our charts. This case is being blown way out of proportion by the media because people are fucking retarded.

I'm not saying it was necessarily the case here, but the policy probably stems from do not resuscitate orders, and living wills of the residents. The nurse's communication was atrocious and her general non-chalance was incredibly off putting and devoid of any sort of compassion or empathy, though.

not reading thread. Listened to video basically.

Prob didn't perform CPR due to a DNR or an insurance policy, or for some wackass reason they had no pocket mask and the patient had something contagious.

Either way, if it was straight up, "im not doing CPR cause the facility wont let me and I'm not gonna let anyone else do it either even if we aren't liable", well then, thats fucked.

I'm in a nursing program right now. The fundamental role of a nurse is to provide care to patients. so yea, pretty od phone call.

Maybe not for you personally, but for plenty it is very emotional. But, the fact that you're so cavalier about it tells me you're incredibly immature, totally incapable of empathy, clinically self-absorbed, or some combination of those things. It does make you sound tough though for sure.
