Off-Season Training

So I was thinking today on the chairlift how I am going to train in the off-season. And i was wondering if you guys had anything that you do in the summer. Summer setups are so sketchy, and I know tramp is good but I was wondering if like rollar blading,or slackline is also good.

Any suggestions?

summer set ups, while they can be sketchy if you dont set it up right, are a really good thing that are a lot of fun. trampolines are good, or in the summer go to a local pool/lake and use the diving boards. slacklining is a lot of fun to get balance down (set it up between two docks over water for more fun).

other than that, strength/endurance training and stretching if you are serious about it and want to avoid injuries. the above things are good for air awareness, balance, and core, but you still need strength so you dont get hurt. lots of biking (i've been going 20 miles a day), as well as squats (one legged on a balance ball works really well) and box jumps are my favorite. also do lots of core work, things with medicine balls seem to work really well. and dont forget about upper body. while it may not be as important to skiing as legs, it is still important to being well rounded and in over all good shape, and will help (ive popped my shoulder out 2 times this season, and probably could've avoided taht if i did more upper body last summer)

also stretch a lot. lots of injuries in ski season could be avoided if people stretched so their bodies could take more abuse. i normally just do stretches in the morning, after i work out, and at night (if i didnt just work out). some people like yoga. i dont doubt it helps a ton, and ive considered it, but i dont think its for me personally, although i might to get ready for next year.

also dont kill youself training for ski season. unless you are a highly competitive athlete or racer, training should be fun like skiing is. i personally like going to the gym and working out and riding my bike, so i just cater most of my workouts towards things that benefit my skiing, in addition to other things.

also, drink lots of beer. one of the most important parts of training.

Don't train just have fun and keep in shape. Personally I golf, aggressive skate, tramp, make a set up every year and do a crossfit class three times a week just for fun.

Get some cheap aggressive inline skates.. you get hated on a lot but after doing it a bit this summer, I felt so comfortable on rails my first day back.

Also, legs and core.. how you do it is completely up to you.

I personally love doing both rollerblading and slack lining, but I do both mostly for fun and not really to train

I worked out this entire past year and noticed a huge difference this year compared to last year. Not being tired and sore after a day of riding was the biggest thing I noticed. As for other things I do in the summer, I pretty much just like to skate.

Lots of beer/alcohol should be your first priority when it comes to training. Then weed, then you start the exercises or whatever tickles your fancy.

If you build a real summer set up and hit some solid rails frequently you'd be surprised how fast you'll progress.

Does slack lining really work that well for helping your balance on rails? There is a rock climbing gym near my house with a slack line room so I'm tempted to look into it now.

I drink more in the summer to make sure I am good to go once winter comes.


Oh, PS. We ski. This is not the NFL. Training for skiing is for the racers.

i've only tried slacklining once but it's the hardest damn thing to balance on. i was expecting to be able to walk around and do flips off of it but after hours of trying i could only stay on for like 30 seconds tops. if you can comfortably balance on it, you can balance on just about anything

I don't know if you've ever done it, but inline skating in a park is pretty damn fun. I haven't done it in at least 10+ years but when I was a kid dropping in on 12 foot halfpipes and 360s over spines was incredibly fun.

I'm tempted to try it again in the off season to see if it helps my skiing.

i love inline. didn't do much this summer but i'm at the point where i can keep things interesting on minis. not great at bigger street style stuff but i can do every trick before 3s on, even stuff like true kind, on knee high flat rails and simple stuff. hopefully i can step my game up this summer and get over my fear of topsides on ledges haha

I would highly recommend purchasing a road bike if you can afford it (any decent one is pretty damn expensive plus all the other shit you can end up buying).  I bought one last May, became semi-addicted to cycling, and I have felt like a brand new skier this winter.  The benefits (fitness level and leg strenth) are more helpful if you're into big mountain, but it also helped my confidence in the park tremendously because I felt like I could stomp anything and not wash out. 

Cycling is also a great way to explore the outdoors because you can cover a lot of ground and go on really long rides once you reach a certain fitness level.  I also got bike rollers for indoor training, and these pretty much force you to have really good balance otherwise you eat shit and fall off.

if you want to go anywhere in freeskiing you will need to train..but if you dont want to go anywhere and dont want to get all you can, then by all means dont train

That looks AWESOME. Not sure about helping rail balance and in air assurance, but can help with powder and generally staying active in the sport

I'm getting a bike soon so I'll be riding a lot. I also am trying to convince my parents to let me build a set up but everything I have said they said no :(

to be better in general, or good enough to do it for a living. what could be better then skiing as your job! who cares if you dont make much money..skiing is the best thing on earth
