A former LAPD officer wanted for three shooting deaths is suspected of stealing a couple’s vehicle in Big Bear Tuesday before engaging officers in a shootout that prompted a swift response to a cabin in the mountain resort area.
Gunfire was reported near Seven Oaks Mountain Cabins, a collection of rental homes at 40700 Seven Oaks Road in Angelus Oaks (map). Aerial video showed smoke coming from one of the cabins.
Two officers were wounded in the shootout, which might involve 33-year-old Christopher Dorner, according to authorities.
Deputies initially responded to a stolen vehicle report at 12:22 p.m., according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. A couple reported that a man matching Dorner’s description stole their white 2005 Dodge pickup.
Investigators are attempting to confirm whether the homeowners were held hostage, according to Cindy Bachman, spokeswoman with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
The vehicle was located at Highway 38 and Glass Road, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The subject ran into a wooded area and barricaded himself in a cabin, sheriff’s officials said.
