Anyone a LaTeX master?

No, not S&M in the traditional sense but Science & Math!  I am looking for help installing a TeX editor as well as a compiler that can take .tex files and readily convert them to PDF.  In the past I have used monkey teX and mikteX but my computer died and now I am not overly sure what to install and how to bind the programs to interact.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
