So I have cancer...

Found out about a month ago that i have stage 3 hodgkin lymphoma, now am stuck at home in nh for the semester (was in utah where they are getting dumped on this year) while I get treatment.

So far I have had only one treatment, but will have them every 2 weeks until July. Pretty bored living at home and wondering if anyone here has had cancer or something that has kept them shut in for a while. Any idea on how to prevent boredom? I have started to cook a lot and thinking about learning a language.

I can't go outside too much or ski and have to avoid crowds because I pretty much no longer have an immune system and therefore can get sick really easy. If I get sick they can't give me chemo until I get better which delays treatment.

any serious ideas that don't involve smoking/drinking would be greatly appreciated

It hasen't been said yet, but if being handy is up your alley, build a car. Wrenching is a great feeling, you have plenty of time to do it (which is the limiting factor), and you'll have a badass car on the other side.

Xbox / PS3 is a great solution, as is an instrument. From the instruments I can play, the most fun are the banjo, mandolin and harmonica. Harmonicas are super cheap.

My Dad went through something similar, although they completely killed his immune system because they completely killed the bone marrow for a transplant. He has multiple myeloma, which is somewhat similar to lymphoma. Cooking is a GREAT idea, especially since it will give you the ability to satisfy all those weird chemo-indued cravings. My dad really fucking loves chocolate when he's on chemo haha.
And a lot of these other suggestions are really good as well. I like the Lego one. Legos are fucking awesome. I'd also suggest learning chess. It takes lots of time and is just a classy hobby. A friend of mine recently told me about chess.com. You can join for free and play other people around the world as well as learn stuff and play the computer. It's sick. If you ever join, you should add me. My name on there is the same as on here.

Sorry to hear man, but stay up! A friend of mine was diagnosed with hodgkin lymphoma earlier this fall and she just finished her last radiation treatment last week! You can beat it man. Maybe get in to drawing or painting, both are good fun.

^drawing or painting is a great idea. Any type of art, really. Get creative with it and you'll probably get a lot better fairly quickly. When I had knee surgery last winter I got into pencil drawing and for 3 or 4 hours a day for a few weeks I'd draw. When I was able to do other things and didnt have the time for it anymore, I actually really missed it.
So, try to take advantage of your free time and do things that you wouldn't be able to do normally like Netflix, Xbox, etc.

obviously PSU has had and still has major problems in its upper levels of management. THON has nothing to do with that. It is the largest student run philanthropy in the world and will donate more than 10million to cancer research this year. everyone, please show respect and recognize what is going on

Keep your chin up. Sounds like you already have a great attitude. My friend had the same thing, and she turned out just fine. Hang in there. Cancer has riddled our family. My mom got breast cancer and beat it, then she got non hodgkins lymphoma, and beat that as well. Then 2 years ago my father got thyroid cancer. Hang in there bud!

Learn an instrument like guitar or the harmonica. Thats a lifelong skill that you can learn pretty easily and go alot of different directions with.

if you're going to get cancer, Lymphoma is actually the best you can get. it has the highest survival rate without any major repercussions.

OP- when my buddy had it he pretty much smoked pot and played video games the whole time so that probably doesn't help you.

list of things to do
learn an instrument
make a flip book and then make it into a stop go animation video
learn a language
write a book
work out (depending on how you feel)
read
paint a picture
learn to sew or knit badass hats and shit
master and beat video games

I'd really recommend getting a 24x36 tablet, some charcoal, and some pastels. They're really easy mediums to work with, and its a shit ton of fun because you can use your hands.

Play piano/guitar/drums
Read (get a good environmental studies textbook, that shit's dope.)
Learn Photoshop
Ableton
Cook

Maybe get some plants to look at/ take care of? I know it sounds stupid, but I have an orchid and I love the thing. It's really peaceful to look at, and it's nice to see it grow as I care for it. Another option would be some fish. You'd have something to take care of, that would give you some motivation through the day. Plus you can stare at a fish tank for hours on end.

I had two members in my family that had cancer, one actually had lymphoma and was 78 years old. She had chemotherapy treatment and survived.

For a hobby a good way to pass time is maybe make a YouTube channel or learn Spanish. Either way its fun and learning Spanish is fun because some words are swears in different forms of Spanish.

Have you ever tried alternative ways of healing I know it sounds crazy and you probably think I'm an idiot. But while my mom was dying had over 40 cancerous tumors some which were 15 cm in diameter and many more smaller ones she tried an alternative healing method and she had an amazing recovery. PM me if you want more info call me crazy but it's worth a shot this is your life we are talking about.

I'm home from college for the rest of this semester too, but on a lot better terms than you. I've been bored out of my mind and all my friends from home are at college. but for the most part I've been playing all my old video game series. Like Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, etc. Beating/Playing each game in chronological order until I feel like moving onto the next one. I've been cooking a lot too which is awesome!  I'd definitely get netflix though, that's like an unlimited supply of all the greatest shows on TV. I give you the most vibes I can, and you can totally get through this!

And on a humorous note you could definitely get mad bitches after this. This older girl I work with who just beat breast cancer a year ago tells me about how she picks up mad cute younger guys by talking about beating cancer. So keep that one in mind;)

probably said before but learn how to play guitar it is very therapeutic and rewarding. also im not trying to be a fuck but if treatment is rough for you i would suggest trying cannabis but edibles would be more efficient so you dont have to smoke.

Art, Netflix/tv, Music, video games, reading, puzzles. i don't know how much physical activity you are able to do, but maybe something like kendama that doesn't require too much.

Or if you're really into computers and stuff maybe looking at something that could help in the future like learning to write code.

My Dad survived cancer, he has said repeatedly it makes you really appreciate life more than anything. Once you're cured every shitty thing you had to deal with in life before cancer doesn't seem to be so bad anymore. My Dad basically panted and learned some random instruments while he was out of work from surgery. He got the surgery done when I was 4, 13 years have passed since then and he's happier than anyone I know on this planet. Keep your head dude, once this is over your future is very bright. so much good vibes going to you man, the really sucks, hope all goes well! id try to learn and play qutair or make rap insrtumentals, learning some fundemnals in art would be cool too, learn photo and video, get into macro photography so you can take different cool pics inside or something!
