Why do movies as of late kind of suck compared to movies of years past?

I have been been watching movies from the 90s and 80s a lot lately and they are all way better than movies now a days. They make you think more and the story lines are more in depth, recent movies are just filled with filler it seems with less complex themes. Have we have a society really been dumbed down that much that even our movies are dumber ?

I feel like they don't need to put in as much effort because a movie will still make a lot of money if you have the right cast. And making money is mostly what it's all about. Why make a Goodfella's style movie where everything is complex, the script, sets etc...when you can make a movie that hints at seeing Mila Kunis naked with Jack Black in a supporting role? That would make a hell of a lot more money than a complex and engaging movie.

Yes but any q.t movie should be left put because every movie he makes is amazing. Him and Wes Anderson and Ridley Scott still make great movies.

I was about to mention Ridley Scott but you covered that. I think a lot of it has to do with special effects. Now all movies are filled with it and they put less focus on scrpts ext.

Theres been a lot of problems with the writer's unions in Hollywood, so companies are going to remakes and adaptions more lately. Also, they tend to go more to unoriginal because the customer base is more familiar with the movie, and thus is more likely to go see it.
The movie companies thrive off money now, not success of ideas.

Its a lot easier to make Transformers 2 and 3 than it is to come out with two newly plotted movies.

True grit for sure. And I think you're just looking in the wrong place for good movies. Toronto film festival always has great movies and so does Sundance. 500 days of summer was a really good movie with a original story line, and the only reason it was in theaters was because it did so well as the festivals. Gotta know where to look sometimes.

They need to start making Horror movies the way they used to. I think they just ran out of ideas so they try to entertain us with excessive gore and no plot.

Although there were some very entertaining (non-horror) movies towards the end of 2012

I have absolutely no time for horror movies at all, I'd don't find them scary or interesting.

The only ones I really liked were 28 Days/28 Weeks Later and I don't know if you would even class them as "horror" movies

I still think the "top tier" movies the last few years have been good.

This year: Django, Argo, ZeroDarkThirty, Les Mis, Moonrise Kingdom, Lincoln, Skyfall.

Last year: The Descendants, The Artist (although I wasn't a fan), The Help, Moneyball

2 years ago: The Kings Speech, Black Swan, The Social Network, Inception, True Grit

think the problem is new and completely original ideas. the majority of main movies in the past few years are either based off a book, comic, another movie, historical event, etc etc. Very few totally new and original ideas.

i really enjoyed looper and hugo as well. i think there hasn't been sudden decline in good movies, i feel like there are always been lots of shit movies that get pumped out, but we forget abou them really quickly

OP, it is because they are trying to appeal to the younger stupider mostly i would say 14- age groups. because the movies coming out now are going to be staples pf those kids choldhood when they are adults. so they may suck for us but transformers 12 is great for all the groms. thats just my view.

I could go on forever man, if you ask me, we are living in a film renaissance. Movies are getting better because writers are being challenged more and more to be original. The dark ages of the 2000's are over, the 2010's are going to be much better for film.

Although i will preface myself by saying, all my favorite movies are still from the 50's through to the 70's, some even earlier. Optimism is important though, there is a reason old movies are better, because no one remembers the shitty ones.

but not really. look up movies that came out in the early 90s. And not just the award winners. There are a ton of absolutely terrible, terrible films that came out.

if nothing else I'd say films are better now, with more independent film companies existing, and bigger budgets for just about everybody.

Debateable. There was no shortage of total garbage music that was put out in the 50s-90s that was popular with the masses. it has just since been largely forgotten about and has not transcended generations like the classics have.

7 plot lines:

-Overcoming the Monster
-Rags to Riches
-The Quest
-Voyage and Return
-Rebirth
-Comedy

Is it because you're 16 and thought it was boring? Or is because you thought it was going to be an action flick about the mission to kill Bin Laden? Or is it because you missed the part where Jessica Chastain plays Maya and fucking dominates that role, her character development was one of the best i've seen. Or is it because you thought the story of a 9 year manhunt for one of the most dangerous fuckheads on this planet wasn't interesting enough?

comedies have gone down hill imo, but iv seen some pretty good action/thriller/suspense etc movies lately. zero dark thirty was pretty good, django was dope, argo was pretty good.

This entire topic is stupid. It's equivalent to saying all music today sucks. There are plenty of incredible movies being made, just because there are some really shitty big-time Hollywood films doesn't mean the entire industry has gone down the drain. Also, it's so ironic that you picked a pretty generic action director in Ridley Scott as an example of someone who makes movies with depth.

there are some good movies, but they dont get attention, and for that reason, the good movies, with good, creative ideas, dont have funding. so they cant quite live up to their potential.

that and CG fucking I CGI ruins everything. so many potentially great movies ruined by being turned into a fucking retarded looking video game.
