Guessing you being in NY you are talking about the Mount Washington in NH. The thing about Mount Washington is that the weather and conditions can change very rapidly up there. Some days you can hike it, and even ski with the same gear you use at the resort. Other days you'll want a good selection of technical clothing, and gear including ice axes, crampons, avy beacons and many other things. The weather can go from gorgeous to hell in the course of a couple hours.
The avy center site up there is a good start
http://www.mountwashingtonavalanchecenter.org/ as well as timefortuckerman.com/.
You'll want to be confident in your choices, timing and ability or you can quickly get yourself in trouble.
Its a good hike though!
