Detuning edges

Does anybody have any tips that could help me I just got a new pair of skis and the edge are wicked sharp.

Easiest, but scariest way is just hit rails. After a solid day, they'll be much duller and 2-3 days later they'll be as smooth as your old skis. But, taking a file to the edges underfoot always helps too.

carefully file, a block of wood doesn't harm it just to take the sharper part of the edge off

use a sand sponge, youll find them in the painting department at home depot, they work like a charm

I really high grit count like 60p or 40p must surely work alright? Sand sponge sounds like a good idea though, i'll check it out! Thanks

This, they're only about $2. Get the medium or heavy grit one.

What I do is go to a ski shop and use the belt sander to round them off underfoot. Takes about 1/1000th of the time of doing it with a file and gives a much more even result.

use a soft gummy stone. it'll dull the edge but not round it out so you can still have a decent amount of edge hold. also works for removing burrs.

Yep, if your edges are detuned your edges will take more abuse and last longer if your planning on hitting rails.

Take a coarse file and make even stokes going underfoot, make sure you try to keep it at the same angle throughout. Then after you've taken off as much as you would like take a diamond stone and do the same thing back across. After you've finished with the diamond stone take a gummy stone and rub it right along your de-tuned edge and it will take all of the burs off and they will be nice and smooth.

Sharp edges fucked my shit up, I always take a file to the edge from binding to binding.

Best answer yet. You can detune edges with a ski pole of a rock even, but the quoted posted is technically the proper way to do it.

what a retard! brand new edges are sharp enough to cut your skin, catch on ice and hang on rails so detuning is a MUST for any real freestyle skiing. you can seriously hurt yourself with factory edges and chance ruining the edge without proper tuning. tune the whole edge, it will make your press game smooth too!

a gummy stone works the best.
