Pretty good deal, but the idea of anyone (99.9%) of the kids on this site having a scarlet scares me. I wouldn't want to shoot raw if I had the choice, shit isn't as fun as people think. I'd almost rather have an fs700 for $7-8k. but, i guess if you're in the process of buying a scarlet, this would be a sick deal.

i would have to agree. a scarlet would be sick to have for sure, but you would need to invest quite a bit in some hard drive space if you were gonna be shooting raw all the time.

Not to mention a computer that could handle editing it, even with raw 5k photos mine is kinda slow.

Yeah id rather take the fs700 with the frame rates. As mentioned before, raw would be super fun to shoot with for a little bit, but i would need expesnive hdds and a better editing machine.

The BMC is less than $5k for a basic setup. The Scarlet is over $10k without lenses. Durp.

Also, I don't see why this is getting so much attention. For $8k the Scarlet is probably the last camera I'd buy.

That's just the brain, to make it functional, you need to put in 12k and that is without lenses.

What else do you need? The only thing I can think of to physically make it work is a hard drive, and that's not gonna be 5k, so I'm missing something.

2 batterys. charger, cardreader, 2 memory cards, side handle, 5 inch touch screen.

Side handle is so you connect your batteries.

The discount is a nice little bonus for someone who was looking at a scarlet even without the discount. It's not like there will be an influx of people buying these. $4000 difference is not a make or break deal for most people who would be getting into a red system, just a nice break. Take that $4,000 and put it towards the other gear you'll need to turn it into a functional kit.

Pretty good deal. Sure you don't want to shoot in 4K RAW, but you don't have to use it to it's full capability. Just shoot at 1080P at 120 fps. That'd be pretty cool.
And even if you're not gonna use 4k RAW, the quality of the whole thing is just insane, right?

The onboard one to the camera is but you can't import footy to your computer from it. That's why you need the card reader.

I'm not saying it's not a good deal, I'm saying that 7k for a scarlet is incredibly deceiving if you are starting from scratch.

truth, but still, people have commented on raw workflows mostly prior to my post, and were all for it in the other thread. IDK, maybe I recall it wrong

So I'm wondering, do any of you think there is a link between this action on the RED camera and the recent Red Bull Stratos mission ?


I just read this article and made me think that maybe they are reselling those camera.

those were red ones in that autoplay video (the first few seconds that i watched at least)

Jannard said they have less than one minute of runtime, so I'd guess no.

People are talking about there being a chance of gopros "huge release" later today beig a GoPro 3 with 4k? Not sure if there's really any chance of this but Rambo didn't think it was impossible

I bet you $10 it was used on the stratos jump (the new 3) and they will use that to promote the hell out of it.

There was stuff on TGR about the new gopro, it got deleted.

This is what I remember seeing:
They were all colors, not numbers, like the equivalent of the 1 is the black, the 2 silver, and i forget the name of the new one. So the 3 models at 3 different price points.
Thinner design, body+backpack will be as thick is the current body.
Micro SD
Built in wifi on all models
I don't remember seeing anything mindblowing about resolutions or framerates, but i could be wrong

Fuck I hope it's not Microsd, that'd be the worst decision they've ever made and @dtf sounds promising, majorly expecting something awesome now. I guess given there's going to be 3 models that the 4k one(if there is one) would cost a lot more

Your right in the sense of storage space.  But not having a limited codec with internal recording is awesome. 

I wish at times I had a less media hungry camera.  But after shooting RAW i'm not sure I could ever give it up.  I'd rather take the time and shoot/process/edit raw. 

It's actually easier if you know the workflow.  That is often omitted and overlooked.

For example...I shoot, drop the footage, say 128GB and 200GB, back it up to a second raid as well. 

Bring the footage into Premiere raw, edit and don't even bother with ProRes.  This is all on a relatively simple Imac, and rendering goes as fast as FCP 7 does for me with 4K raw files.  Not to mention the amount of retainable information left in the image to grade.  In my mind it's worth the few extra dollars in hard drives.

no they don't it's a well known fact that the MX sensor on RED's really struggles without proper light.  I've rarely heard anyone I know with a Scarlet, Epic or R1 say "oh it's RAW we don't need lights"  I usually hear the opposite.  "It's a RED, we'll need to light the scene properly". 

Sometimes I don't shoot with proper light but I never use RAW as the reasoning for it, and usually toss those shots aside anyways.

Even then I really haven't heard anyone with Raw cameras say that.  Even those working with BMD's.  I really think it's mis-information from the outside.  Raw is like anything else, it has pros and cons. 

You can have a raw image with more information to work with in post.

Or you can have a baked codec from MOST cameras that you have to spend time just getting to a workable format. 

To me honestly I spent more time on getting shots from multi camera shoots just to a point where they could be edited/colored and all formatted properly.  With Raw, on certain projects it obviously is an advantage to have the ability to do more to the image, not saying thats a excuse, but more of a reason and positive of shooting raw.  Sure in some ways it can cover mistakes, in others it just really gives you a better final result if people know what to do with it. 

Downside, alot and most dont.

Exciting news. Too bad I bought a GoPro 2 literally 4 days ago. We'll see what happens, though I don't think 4k is an option. I'm thinking 120fps at 720p or something along those lines.

Of course they won't explicitly say it. What I mean is that when you democratize technology, the rate of garbage increases, as well as quality stuff. DSLRs brought a wave of people who feel they don't need lights for anything because they can just crank up the ISO and they're pleased with it. The same will happen down the road with RAW, I guarantee it.

I hear that, and still disagree to a point.  But it's like the 700, over on DVXuser every other thread in the FS forum is check out my slow mo.  So I hear you.  So in that sense I'm more than ok with the price I paid to get raw.  At the same time it opens the door to more people that are extremely talented and under funded. 

Alot of people that own film gear are independently wealthy, which is why you still see garbage.  I'd say 25-40 percent actually work there asses off to get what they want.

It's definitely a double-edged sword. Though I don't know if the relationship between a person's wealth and their gear is causal. I'm sure a larger percentage of people who own that stuff as a hobby will suck, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't hate most of the RED footage I've seen from people who worked their way up and do it for a living, which makes me think it has less to do with finances and more to do with my draconian sense of taste.
