Cliffjumping: how high is dangerous?

so me and a few buddies are going on a mission the next week to basicly bang many women and cliffjump all over ny/ vt. we have a buncha spots picked out and some bigger ones (60-110 feet supposidly so i assume its like 50) and were filming for my buddies video contest so we all plan to throw some dubs. I can dub back and dub cork a 25 foot cliff solidly but never threw it on something bigger so its gonna be new to me doing it on something 2 or 3 times as big and i may over rotate some shit until i get the timing down perfectly. So basicly ns, how high of a drop onto the water can actually injure you worse than knocking your wind out or some bruises. Injuries like dislocations and broken bones or knocked out or worse. Whats everyones experience or knowlege of this? I know when i hit the water on a 50 its some solid impact....

this bridge is about 35 feet, and i backfliped it a month or 2 ago and as you can see, i over rotated the tiniest bit.

usually you would come up fine from that, but my back was bent the slightest bit when i went in and it felt like i broke my back right there. i couldnt bend down for days and i didnt jump for a month, it wasnt because of a bruise from hitting or anything, but it was internal, and hurt BAD. you can seriously fuck yourself up from any height.

just always try to go in like a pencil!

Yup, always remember to point your toes too. And then spin as soon as you enter so you don't go down 8 million feet.

you kinda answered your own question there didn't you?

I've probably jumped off of around 70 or so, backed down from bigger ones because I just wasn't feeling it.

Years ago we were hanging out at my friends cabin and after an afternoon game of Risk we headed over to the inner bay and had a good old fashioned cliff jumping session. There's a 20, 40, and 60ft (approx heights), three of us were jumping, the others were hanging out on the dock and in a canoe watching us. Hit the 20 a few times doing some flippy spinny tricks, went to the 40 and did some backies, eventually working our way up to the 60.

So, buddy jumps first, I hear him hit the water and come up, yelling "clear" when he was a safe distance away. I ran and jumped in, did the same thing, the lady in our jumping group was the last to go, and sure enough, after I gave the all clear we see her jump off the top and land feet first, pretty much upright - but when she surfaces her head is down and she's unconscious. Me being the closest I swim over and pull her head out of the water trying to keep her spine as straight as possible till my friend in the canoe who has proper first aid training came to take over. We get her up on the dock and she starts convulsing and spitting up a bit of blood, but still for the most part, unconscious. She ended up getting air lifted to Vancouver leaving us to think about life and stuff. In the end she got brain swelling around the back of the head and a broken collar bone, no real permanent damage. What we figure happened, is that even though she worked her way to the big cliff, when she jumped off and realized how big it was, she got scared and passed out in mid air - it would explain the nature of the injuries more so than any other scenario.

I guess the moral of my story is that shit can happen really fast when you start getting to bigger drops, so just never let your guard down and have a plan for if/when shit hits the fan, because you never know.

75 foot. This one took me about 20 minutes arguing with myself to jump or not. I'm glad I did. Didn't hurt as bad at the 65 for some reason. Had to clear a small tree and a ledge to land this one.

Don't flip off anything higher than 40ft I say. It's way higher than it sounds. I flipped off the 20ft only and didn't throw doubles.

done 50-60 foot cliffs, super fun.. never had any problem with the butt water though. definitely wear shoes though, it makes climbing to the spot that much easier

Well recently I took a chance and jumped a 7 footer, but I landed right on my ass and shit squirted out like a fountain for the next 20 minutes straight. The doctor said I pulled my anus and it took a surgery to repair my anus. My new butthole is tucked right under my ball sack its so fucking inconvenient.

biggest ive done is like 60-70 feet, which is pretty fucking high, i could see maybe doing like 85-90, but i just dont see how anything past that you could go through it without getting at least a little bit hurt. the 60ish footer i do still hurts even when you get it perfect.

my biggest thing is wearing shoes, i usually wear big ass sneakers and tie them real tight, land flat footed and it takes a lot of the impact away. i could see wearing the thin impact shorts/ shirts mtn bikers wear if ur gonna be flipping a lot.

also, i swear you get a lot more resistant to impact if you work your way up. im usually a pussy at the start of summer and seem to be able to take much harder impacts towards the end. like landing a 40 footer perfectly might hurt some at the beginning of summer, and at the end, after many jumps and fucked up landings, i could land super off axis and be fine. im the same way with skiing, ill get some bruises and shit at the beginning of the season but by the end i can take super hard hits and feel fine the next day.

yeah i jumped off a 45ft cliff a couple summers ago and forgot to point my right foot and bruised my heel. Just be concious of what youre doing.

Holy shit that sounds risky, 7 feet. Ive been scared shitless since the last time i jumped off a diving board. So im at my grandmas retirement home hanging out with her and her bridge partner. Yeah that's a valid point, but for stuff 30 and under I think it's better you just need to hold onto it. Especially when you're flipping because when you fuck up you it's not as bad.

Today I front flipped off a 25ishft cliff. Not a big deal at all. The biggest I've done is 40ish. However, this one you had to run and jump out 7ft over a cliff below. Well I ran and shot off the cliff and when I came around for the flip I literally saw the rock of the lower cliff less than a foot from my head... One of the scariest experiences I've had cliff jumping. I did get a video of it that I'll perhaps post later. That one terrifying experience definitely has me feeling a lot more cautious about thinking everything through before I do it.

If you're throwing dubs off something bigger than 25ft then that's really gnarly, and 10x more dangerous. My friend tried a dub front off a 30ft and over rotated straight to hit face. Knocked him out cold, and had to get pulled out. There's a crappy cell phone facebook video of this too.

Just know your abilities, know the spot, know the timing and make sure you have people around to scrape you out of the water if something goes terribly wrong. Good luck to you!

Also idk how this hasn't been posted yet. This is probably one of the most disgusting messed up accidents the internet has to offer. This thread reminded me of my friends talking about the video, so I finally looked it up. Well... It shocked me and scares me to be cliff jumping.

Yup they are. That place was beautiful. Took us under an hour to get there from Boston so not bad at all. On the 75 I didn't get my arms completely to my side so my forearms slapped the water a little but it was only a slight sting. Pretty successful landing compared to the 65. I'm going again in September before it gets too cold.

Internet curiosity has lead me to some fucked up shit. I watched something I saw in my fb news feed of an amusement park in Japan(maybe a different asian country) but it was a ride tipping into another ride and you could see people hanging everywhere and falling. It jsut completely bummed out my whole day.

A guy being beheaded sounds too messed up for me... Not even gonna google that. I'll call it quits for today at that cliff jumping accident.

Click for larger image. This is a 75er if you jump from the top of where the guy is sitting. I did it and it blew my flip flops apart. Anything over 50ish requires shoes IMO unless you're Mike Wilson.

this is why I think every single height in this thread is exaggerated. people ALWAYS completely over estimate the height of their jumps.

I hate to be a dick about it, but it really starts to get to me.

assuming you are 5'10", an average male height:



first we'll take into account for the bends in your body

secondly we'll straiten this out and get a ruler accurate to probably +/- 2 inches

next we'll copy this down the length of the cliff adding markers for visuals at every 5'10" section

next, count them up. I count about 7.4, but we'll round up to 7 and 1/2 to make things simple.

by my math 5'10" multiplied 7 and 1/2 times gives 43'9".

assuming +/- 2" per section, then +/- about 1 foot.


this means your jump was approximately 43-45 feet. NOT 65.



every single person completely overestimates by probably around 20-50% of the height.

right outside of my town, we have a lake with some cliffs to jump. everything from 10-70ish. ive jumped up to the 60 footer, but my progression was slow and i dont flip anything but the small ones. every two or three years we will hear of a fatality, and at least several times a summer an ambulance will be dispatched because people are injured. this year we have had two broken backs from the 40 footer, just bad landings. last year, someone was knocked out on the 50 footer and drowned. if your going to go, take it slow, and have a crew that will get you out if your hurt or unconcious. good luck with your trip.

I found a video these tweaker ass white trash dudes who live around my town made. It's a weird collection of stupid meth fueled backwoods adventures and stupid human tricks and them showing off their guns.. But skip to 6:52 and that tree stand is the highest thing that I have jumped. The trestle and the river they are at throughout the video is a chill spot too with a bunch of cliffs around it to jump.
