Keepin in shape for skiing

title says it. how do you keep in shape in the off season for skiing? and does anyone have any good exercises to do to strenghten your knees?

ive just got a balance board (piece of pvc tube with plank of wood over the top) and finding it pretty good for balance and core strenght.

I dont do much just general cardio doing running or cycling (outside, fuck gyms) and because i live in the uk go skiing on dryslope or indoors

why would you need cardio for downhill skiing? unless you walk up instead of take the lift.

Hiking a rail/urban.

I'm going to mhssc in session 9, and I'm anticipating a lot of hiking.  So I've been running a good amount, I actually just got back from a 5 miler half an hour ago.  I also do a lot of crossfit and kettlebells.  My workouts don't get me "jacked" per se, but they sure as hell get me strong.

Having been through some close calls, including a partially torn ACL which was stabilized by the strength of the muscles surrounding my knee, I am a real believer in non-skiing fitness training. The most important exercise for me is full, deep squats. After that, the next most important exercise would be deadlifts. I note that the OP has a pink name and girls may not be as inclined to freeweights but it is probably more important for them to strengthen the knee muscles, as they are more prone to knee injury, perhaps, in part, because they are averse to strength training. I do lots of cardio as well but I am old and need it more. Someday you will understand ;)

Its basically because i hate gyms and its more just general exercise rather than staying in shape as i cant put on weight (ive tried it just doesnt happen)

I'll cycle 15-20 miles about 4-5 times a week. I also do a little bit of running, but cycling pretty much does the same thing but with lower impact. I also jump rope A LOT. A LOT of core, and I guess what you would call standard upper boy stuff (pushups, curls, etc.).

If I had to pick one exercise, narrow stance DB squats would be my preferred exercise.

My workout schedule is:

monday: powerlifting,
tuesday: sprints and plyo,
wednesday: kettlebells,
thursday: yoga
friday: powerlifting
saturdays: Either 3 km swim, 10 km run or 30 km bike
sundays: Rest

Today is sprints and plyo!! yayyyy!

Wide and narrow stance squats. Front, side and back lunges... PM me if you want help with a routine. I teach a winter sports and conditioning class in the off season.

Kind of similar

monday: ~15 minutes of windsprints, weight lifting (all body)
tuesday: ~30 min windsprint
wednesday: same as monday minus leg lifting
thursday: same as tuesday
friday: same as monday
saturday: usually hard 8 mile hike in mounatins
sunday: usually easy 2 mile hike with a little rock climbing for cliff jumping (rest day)

I am not some avid exercise enthusiast. Just trying to work off the 20 fat pounds gained in college this year :/ Plus the legs will help for skiing.

I lift weights in the mornings and then i also swim 60 laps a week at the pool I work at. Then Football season keeps me in shape all the way up to winter

If you guys want some really crazy workouts I would just go look in the "NS Fitness Log/Workout Thread." Some of the workouts are lame and some are insane, but if you see one that would work for you check it out. There's probably 4-7 pages of people listing their workout plans and diets etc. so it's worth a shot if you're looking to stay strong and healthy.

I don't work out to benefit my skiing, but I do long runs and speed workouts for xc and I feel like that helps my legs out a little. some leg workouts at school sometimes too.

trampolining will obviously help with tricks, but it's also good for your quads and cardio.
any core stuff will help you in the off season as well.

but I feel like skiing is one of those things where working out in the off season will help, but not significantly. It's a lot easier to just stay in shape by training for other sports, training specifically for skiing isn't really worth your time unless you're really looking to go big.

My buddy runs track so i usually go to the gym and do his workout plan with him. It's a lot of leg workouts, which helps my stamina on the hill.

I need to start working out. I can never get motivated to do it though. I'll do it for like 2 days and then I either just go fuck that I'm done or I say oooh I'll do it tomorrow but then I never do. Anyone else have this problem/ a way to get around it?

I definitely do. Try going with a friend who goes every day, you might feel bad for ditching him so you will go more often.

Well the only friends I know of that really work out daily are my friends who ski race or do nordic, and they are up at 7am everyday doing interval training and then they train in the afternoons too, but it's all with their skiing coaches/teams

I have a 25 pound, 35 pound and 45 pound,

My current workout is:

One leg squat (25 ) X10 reps (each side)
Goblet Squat (45) x 10 reps
One arm Clean and Press (35) x 10 reps (each side)
One arm Swing (35) x 10 reps each side
Pullups x 15 reps - (NOT kettlebells, I just like doing them on this day)

I usually do the circuit 3 or 4 times. but maybe just once or twice if I need to walk the next day, or if I have taken some time off otherwise my legs feel like jelly for at least 3 days after.

I wake up at 6 to run. Go to work for 8 hours. Then lift. If you focus in the weight room, you can be out of there in 45 minutes to an hour. All of that is done by 5 so then I can go find fun stuff to do.

Occasional gym session.  Mostly gymnastics though, throw down a backflip every day and you feel your core get stronger!

Do any of you know any easy workouts for your core and legs at home? I really have a problem trying to motivate myself. The only working out i do during the summer is at home. Could i also get some tips to getting a six pack? Strictly for the ladies.

slacklining, it may not sound like much of an exercise, but it really is. It works your core, legs, balance and is truly a mind exercise. When you do 1 hour plus of ski tricks and spinning as hard as you can and walk it multiple times it really does do something. It benefits my skiing a lot also. I've had my line for about 3 weeks now and after we got a hail storm this week, I took the hail and put it on my turf (felt like snow) and literally first try stomped a blind 4/claim and I suck at blind spins. I also bounce on a flybed a couple times a week and that's a fucking workout also.

So if you want something that will train balance,core, legs and help skiing go with slacklining and tramping a lot.

I bike trails probably 3-4 nights a week for 2 or so hours. Beyond that I don't have the time to work in much more exercise.

Nice!  I do crossfit and kettlebells 4 days a week, so I use a 24 kg (53 lb) and 28 kg (62 lb) bell most of the time.  But when we've done ladder workouts where you start at a low weight, low rep, and work your way up, I've snatched and clean+pressed a 40 kg (88 lb) bell a couple times in each hand

I just started a new workout. Can't say if it works yet.

Run 6 k a day except sunday.

Monday: Legs
Tuesday: Chest
Wednesday: Back
Thurdsay: Rest, Stretch and abs.
Friday: Shoulders
Saturday: Arms
Sunday Rest and Whole body Stretching.

I'm hoping it's going to be good. Only working a muscle group once per week will give them time to grow and I can workout each day at a much higher intensity.

Diet is the most important part as most people probably know.

go harder, not to rain on your parade.... but 20 miles on a bike is nothing. and yes, i do know what i'm talking about, i make 50 miles trips once every week, as well as various other 20-35 mile trips too.

cycling is notoriously bad for your knees though =/ which sucks.... not the impact damage, but rather the bending and unbending type of damage.
