NS Fitness/Training Log

I know that NS is a very active community, and there are many athletes that excel in different sports on top of skiing. I thought that it might be a cool idea to have a place for everybody to share their workouts or training. I'm a runner and have been keeping logs on my training for the past 5 years or so, and I'm sure there are plenty of other athletes doing similar things for other activities.

Whether you're a casual or competitive athlete, this would be a great place to claim a good workout, vent about a shitty workout, and motivate each other. Any bikers, swimmers, runners post up your workouts. If you're lifting for football, cross training for soccer, or going for a hike get in here too. Really anything flies, just a place to share, keep track of, and see how fit Newschoolers really is.

So just post up what your workout was, how it went. And maybe any short or long term goals you might have.

So to start out, today I ran 6.52 miles in 42:23. Felt pretty good. It was hot, but I was running along Lake Ontario so there was a nice breeze to keep me somewhat cool. After a few setbacks it feels good to get a decent paced run over 6 miles to kick of summer training.

Overall goals: get fit over the next 6 months and shoot for personal bests in the 5k and 10k. Immediate goal: get back in shape and train consistently after a long nagging hamstring injury.

Well, I ran 2 km in 10 min to our local slope. Sprinted all the way up, and was a little longer than I thought. I puked. Walked down and home.

Today was my first day really working out in like 4 months. I finally was cleared to lift weights again this week from my doctor and do running and other high impact activities! First thing this morning I did an hour long free weight class and it felt incredible. I did 25 laps in my pool and now I'm going back out for a 20 minute bike ride over to my barn to see my horse. Ill probably just do some light dressage stuff with her for a bit, but still it feels amazing to be allowed to get back in the saddle. I'm so stoked to finally be allowed to get back in shape.

Well I'm playing HS football next year so I started my workout last Monday.

Basically it's a 3 day workout which can be done any 3 days between Mon. - Fri.

Each day has 7-9 workouts, and you can choose to either do regular pyramids, or 12/12/10/10 sets. Weights are obviously up to your own choosing, but there's tons of different muscle factors that are worked.

-Day 1 is upper back and chest.
-Day 2 is upper body with lower back as well as a warm up for Day 3 which involves 2 very simple and easy leg warm-ups.
-Day 3 is all calf and thigh muscles, as well as a warm up for resetting in Day 1.

On the 4 days a week when I'm not at the gym doing my weight training, I've been running 1.5 mi. (I know this is basically nothing, but I just started and need to build up)

Then 5 days a week I do a core workout every night.

Overall it's been kicking my ass so far, but it's the first time I've committed to a workout and I'm determined to keep it up.

Typical morning workout.

Bike to gym (20 mins)

5 x 10 x 125 bench press

5 x 10 x 100 cable curl / 5 x 10 x 100 cable pulldown circuit

Lunges

4 x 25 x 215 calf raise / 4 x 20 x 60 hamstring curl circuit

3 x 10 x 110 dumbell bench / 3 x 10 x 80 dumbell fly / 3 x 10 pushups circuit

15 min cardio break @ ~160bpm (stairmaster) with ridiculously hot girl on the one beside me ftw

5 x 10 x 90 preacher curl

5 x 10 x 200 pec deck

3 x 20 x 4 plates one legged leg press

5 x 10 x 105 military press 

cool down core, 25 crunch 25 reverse crunch 25 extensions 25 leg raise.

Shower, and off to work. Pretty efficient with it overall, took about 1h15 once I was in the gym.

a few weeks ago i started training for a half marathon on sept. 1! just ran about 7 miles yesterday in 45 minutesish. i plan to run 4 - 5 times a week with mostly 4 -7 mile runs and a longer run each sunday that builds a mile or so each week. pretty excited!

By all means do not let that stop you. Getting a gym membership isnt really thaat pricey, but even if you cant afford one theres TONS of shit you can do to simulate weights, aswell just using body weight.

Ran a loop of the park - 2 ish miles
Warmed up on the erg - 10 minutes
Did a 5 min piece with mediocre time
Then some core and tank work
Then rode home

Work up to max deadlift by doing regular max structure.

Then:

10 deadlifts at 110% of body wieght.
25 box jumps with 24 inch box.
---4X FOR A TIME

That's what I did today.

It's all about getting into a routine, once you get used to working out everyday you just feel better and for me when I don't workout I just don't feel as good. I'd suggest getting a friend so you can motivate each other.

It's hard at first, but once you start to see results it becomes addicting. You just have to sack up and start going to the gym/running/whatever your plan is. Once you get a solid routine going, it becomes easier to stick to it.

i was doing a weekly running workout every other day but then summer school started. it starts at 8 so I have to wake up at 7:00 every week day. Ik first world problems but i plan to get back into it once I get used to the schedule.

Woke up at 930, breakfast, did legs and card, then at 1215 I trained a kid and had a solid chest workout, done by 1:15, and then work from 330-8, repeat tm just different workout and 1 session not 2

I started training for racing downhill (mtb's). I've never trained for anything at all in my life but it does seem to be working.

I've mostly been doing exercises around core stability and fixing left/right imbalances. Usually looks something like this:

-16 x Chop and lift (left then right) (now imbalances are fixed)
-16 x 12kg Single leg cross body one arm dead lifts (left then right).
-16 x 8kg Turkish get ups (8 each side)

Does anybody here race downhill or motocross and have any suggestions for exercises to reduce arm pump?

4x8-10 work sets- weighted pullups
4x8-10 work sets- 1-arm dbell row
4x6-8 work sets- barbell row
3x12-15 work sets- ez bar curl
5x sets reverse crunches

tomorrow is:

2x8-10 worksets dbell incline press
3x8-10 worksets bbell overhead press
2x12ish worksets closegrip bbell benchpress

superset: skull crushers 4x10, thumb-up lateral raises 4x12, and bent reverse dbell reaises 4x15.

may do abs tomorrow if im feeling good - paalof press


Leg day:

3x8 worksets front squats
3x5 worksets back squats
3x5 worksets deadlifts
2x12 worksets bulgarian split squats
3x10 Romainian Deadlift
body weight calve raises during my rest periods
4 sets cable crunches, and/or barbell rollouts

I thought I was doing good with me 40 minute strengthening workouts... now i just kinda feel sad.

But on the awesome side, I can do wall sits for about 2 minutes before wanting to throw up in pain. Had to take 2 days off (today is day 2) cause I could barely walk. I can almost do the splits now as well... which is something I haven't done for about 12 years.

A lot of mountain biking. and a lot of running. I'm not much of a lifter, but I have hella endurance and those two exercises are sooo fun.

I'm not someone who really pays much attention to how many calories I eat, but just for fun, I downloaded the MyfitnessPal app for my phone. It tracks how much you're eating, and all the calories and such. Plus it keeps track of your workouts and stuff too if you want to do that.

One of the coolest things, is the barcode reader on it. So you just scan whatever it is you're eating, and add it to your list.

For example, for my breakfast this morning, I took in
1124 calories
35 grams of fat
94 carbs
59 grams of sugar
104 grams of protein
Which is pretty crazy, since everything I ate is considered healthy.

I was using that app for a while too, real eye opener. Especially when I got Mcdonalds for lunch one day, and ran out of calories for the rest of the day. Had to hammer a run in order to make room for dinner.

Just got done with my run. Took a nap after work and then ate, so I decided to run late. Got in about 5.3 miles in 35:36, all on grass or turf since my legs were feeling a little beat up. Other than that it felt good, and a hell of lot cooler than it was this afternoon.

I climb a bunch and Bike daily (1-2 hrs at 165-185 bpm) with weekend rides for 5-7 hours (80-120 kms +hills)
Climbing is pretty much in place of every other strength work out except chest and some triceps (both covered in push up variations). In addition to those I usually do 20-30 pull ups and chin ups a day as well (1-3 of each each time I walk past my bar)

My big goals for the summer have been in fat loss and cardio endurance rather than weight or strength gains. To accomodate those goals I have cut Pop, red meat, fast food, and alcohol from my diet entirely; I also have limited my over all food consumption and dairy significantly with am aim for 2-3 vegetarian friendly meals a day. So far all the diet rules I have put in place for my self seem to be helping a ton, I started this summer at 198 and am now sitting at around 185. (in 6-ish weeks) hoping to be down to 175 by the end of the summer (preferably around 6-8% body fat.)

So I tried out a pre-workout today for the first time. And now I can't believe what I was missing out on. I told myself that I wouldn't try out any new supplements for the first 3 months of lifting. So after that I decided to try something new. Holy hell. I went up in both weight and reps on every single lift of the day. I'm super excited about how this effects my workout, and can't wait to get back in the gym the next day.

I've been training for a Spartan Race in September. I've been running variable amounts everyday and trying to pack in some core / bodyweight stuff. It's okay; being a bigger guy, running isn't all that awesome...

I run 5 miles everyday, and mountain bike but it just rained a ton so that's out until the trails dry. It was hell running today because it was damn near 100. headache

my fitness log as of so far:

Worked manual labor since mid april. Put on 4 pounds so far as well as leaning out a little bit. Stoked. Starting to lift next week on top of 40+ hours of labor. It's going to be a rough couple of weeks but the gains will outweigh the shittyness. Stoked.
