he was just found to have been doping all along and is getting charged. If found guilty he'll have all Tour de France victories taken away and he's already been banned from the sport

How about this article a couple months back then:


London's Sunday Times said it may take legal action against cyclist Lance Armstrong, including pursuing him for alleged fraud over a libel settlement, in the wake of the United States Anti-Doping Agency's report labeling him a drug cheat.

The newspaper, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp , is "considering taking action to recover the money spent on a libel case he (Armstrong) brought and to pursue him for fraud," said a Sunday Times spokeswoman.

Armstrong sued the Sunday Times and two of its journalists over an article that appeared in the newspaper in 2004 concerning the doping allegations. After a series of rulings in Armstrong's favor in the UK courts, the two sides reached a settlement, the size of which was not disclosed. The newspaper also issued an apology to Armstrong. One senior source at the newspaper said that the case cost it about $1 million.


Since he just confused that he did use doping, he is also telling he lied against a UK court.

I brought this up a few pages ago.

They're going to sue him for Fraud and win, US DOJ seems like they're going to join the whistleblower suit so he's got that going on too.

"just keeping up with his competition" would have meant he didn't win 7 straight. That's hardly just keeping up in my eyes. That's above and beyond domination.


Those fights were great to watch. But they weren't the only epic duels in the tour. The whole argument that he made it entertaining to watch is bullshit. He made it entertaining to watch IN THE US. France and the rest of Europe already watched it and loved the tour, and it was a giant sports event. The US didn't care until they had someone who was good at it.

He's a cheater, plain and simple. What's funny is how now if you look at his professional cycling record, he's an awful cyclist with no real wins to his name.

same as if you took away the results of basically every other high level cyclist from the same time period...

its shitty that lance lied about doping and it turned into such a big deal but everyone else was doping as well.

he has still raised hundreds of millions of dollar for cancer which is much more than any of the other cyclists can say.

The fact that he denied doping for so long is dissapointing, but this honestly doesn't change my opion of him that much. The money he raised for cancer is amazing

I haven't read through this thread too carefully, but in other discussions I've heard, people are too quick to erase all his cycling accomplishments. Lance wasn't some average person who skyrocketed to success because of doping. He was obviously an amazing cyclist before and after doping, and to have that kind of dominance over competitors who were using the same practices is amazing.

meh did anyone really believe that he wasn't doping? It was only a matter of time before the truth came out. He's still a champion in my mind. I sure as hell couldn't win the tour de France with or without doping.

He's been trying to break into the professional triathlon scene. If he confesses USADA might rescind his lifetime competition ban.

Apparently his closest advisers agree that it will increase his legal troubles. But for a guy still worth a LOT of money, I don't think he cares.

Maybe, maybe he even feels bad about burning nearly every bridge he built with friends, family, and sponsors.

First off, I think all your posts are great, I always agree with the point you are trying to make.

Anyways, the thing that bothers me most about this whole doping situation is that people are acting as though Lance was the only guy to dope. Everyone else in professional cycling was doping, and he was just the best of the dopers. If anyone denies that they are loony.

Lance is still a total asshole though. He is confessing on Oprah to get publicity and capitalize on it to make money. He is confessing in the most un-manly way possible. I was a huge fan on him at one point but now he just seems to be in a really bad place mentally.

well thats kind of fair, because for easily 5-6 years, lance was considered to be the only one who didnt dope by mainstream media (obviously differing by country).

to all this cancer thing, idk if lance actually said that himself, but the perception always was that lance survived cancer and because of that he would never dope. like because he has this unique relationship to his body, blablablablabla.

if lance said something himself, which i am too lazy to look up, then its a slap in the face of every other cancer patient.

well i am not saying anyone is, but then again there are no tests. the moment there is money in it and someone can gain a edge, they could probably do it. the stuff that snooker players take or racecar drivers, some sort of amphetamine to increase concentration.

take just weed, it is often described to slow "everything" down while skiing, but i cant speak for myself and have gotten mixed reviews from other skiers as well.



again, i hope there isnt stuff like that going on and idk if there are even doping tests at the xgames or so, but i wouldnt be surprised.

I know a good amount of pros blaze down, just like a good part of our modern society, i know when i blaze while skiing i usually get more into my own world, but im not sure i would say it makes me better or worse, just different. But thats a completely different story than taking amphetamines which do give you mad energy/focus etc
i agree i sure hope skiers never get into that

I feel really bad for the guy. Lance rode in a time when every single person in the peleton was using one form of performance enhancing drug or another, and deserves to have his titles taken away no more than any of the others do, or did.

Truly, I do believe that every cyclist who cheated in that way is undeserving of any professional cycling title. However, what Armstrong has been facing for years seems to be far more of a witch hunt and a quest by many to smear the name of a truly good man.

I am unsure of who to be disappointed with; Armstrong inspired so many people with his rise from rock bottom, but to learn that it is all with the help of performance enhancing drugs is unfortunate. However I am also displeased with the UCI for going so far as to bring it to this level. As the general public, we should know that Armstrong doped, whether or not he ever admitted it, or was found guilty. For the less-cycling-informed public, this news makes Armstrong sound like a bad man and one of the few cheaters.

What everyone needs to know is that in his era, nobody would have made it to the top without doping, and that simply doping is not what took him there. Should nobody in that field have ever doped, Armstrong would still have been the best. He still worked harder than anybody on this site ever will work for anything for his tour titles, and he still had no lack of talent and earned fitness. Doping in Lance's years was a game of catchup. The best did it, so if you wanted to be the best, you would have to as well.

Lance Armstrong is still a good man, who put his resources towards the right things. Livestrong is an incredible foundation that has helped an incredible number of people, and should it survive this wave of bad PR, it will continue to. Armstrong himself was inspirational to more people than I can think of for reasons beyond cancer alone.

It is a shame that performance enhancing drugs are a part of professional cycling, because the sport is so incredible on its own. However, its athletes have earned themselves a dirty name, and for now, remain unclean.

Who can he be a 'good man' when he lied for years about his suspected doping abuse?
He sued a bloody newspaper in 2004 because they made allegations that he had used doping, he won because he lied in court, but now The Sunday Times is demanding a return of the settlement payment plus interest, as well as its costs in defending the case. The total claim is likely to exceed £1m.

Yes, a lot of people used doping in that era, and a lot  have been found guilty of doing so, you just don't hear that much about it, just because it's Armstrong doesn't mean he get a free pass. It was very clear that he used doping, you can't win 7 titles in an era that the entire top segment uses doping without doping yourself.

will be interesting how many legal troubles will follow after he confesses. or he says just enough so noone can sue him.

he cant be that stupid. i mean in 10 years or so, any charges will be time-barred, so i really think he wont share real insights.

The interview is pretty boring so far, Lance' his answers seem pretty choreographed to maximize damage control.

They made a south park episode about this.. You all need to get a life lance is a boss who cares if he took drugs everyone else did. The guy won 5 tour de France's and if you've ever seen some of those hill climbs in person youll relize that no matter how many drugs you take you still have to be superman fit to ride let alone win that Race not once but 5x. Leave the poor bastard alone he's done 1 million more things than any of you will do in your lifetime.

you think all the tours he won were "ruined?" everyone else was cheating, too, and, though it has gotten better, tons of riders still do. if you want to take all the riders who dope out of the race for ruining it, you aren't going to have many riders left.

personally i just don't understand why lance is getting in so much more trouble than anyone else. contador has been in trouble for doping multiple times and he isn't getting a lifetime ban. why is lance? the fact that they banned him for life after he retired from professional racing just makes it look like a witch hunt.

But this isn't like tyler hamilton or anyone else confessing. This is the king of the tour, and the American posterboy of cycling and overcoming adversity.

I just watched his interview with Oprah and boy am I disappointed. Lance USED to be one of my favorite athletes. I put up with the French and others giving him tremendous amounts of shit over the years because I truly believed he was an exceptional athlete capable of great things. After watching him admit that he had cheated multiple times, I was let down...a lot. Obviously tons of cyclists dope, even some of the bigger names (that German guy who would always give him a run in the mountains)but man, to hear Lance admit after all these years to doing multiple forms of "cheating", wow. I've lost a ton of respect for him as an athlete and a person.

Like fujarome said, it's not like he was some nobody, he was Lance fucking Armstrong, 7 times winner of the Tour de France. So obviously they are going to have to make an example out of him.

And did I hear something about them stopping the tour for 10 years? Is this true?
