Putting the chairlift bar down

Every video ive seen of pro s/ other kids on newschoolers riding the chairlift, they never put the bar down. Why the fuck would you not put the bar down? Its more comfy to rest your skis on the bar, and if u lean forward you dont die. It seems like they just do it to act hard or something, but I think its really stupid not to put the bar down, especially on super sketchy high chairlifts.

I have a huge quarrel with people that do that... I'm not even gonna get started. Then when they don't even say sorry, and just kind of look at you with a stupid look on their face.

i guess ive just gotten so used to not riding with the bar i forget its even there...i think its more weird and uncomfortable with it down

if there are foot rests im putting that thing down for sure, but those are actually pretty rare in my experience. otherwise there's no need for a bar to keep me from falling out of a chair

People here (NZ) generally put it down. I'm not too worried either way, have skied overseas without them and no issues unless I'm wearing a back protector plus a pretty full pack, in which case it feels like I'm sitting on the last 4" of the chair. Usually because I can't be bothered taking off my pack.

Like others have said, I'll usually put it down for a foot rest after park laps, but if the people I'm riding with don't put it down, I just leave it at that. let them make the choice.

Sometime I like to rest the legs but sometimes I like the gravity "stretch" I get without the bar. However lots of chairs I've ridden had a bar but no footrests (wtf?? goddamn snowboarder-catering chairlifts) and unless it was windy or wearing a backpack I'd keep it up to enjoy the free, sitting/living-on-the-edge feeling.

Agreed but when its 30ft drop to 10ft of ride-able snow to 100ft cliff and nothing but trees to land on i would go with the bar.

When I learned to ski 3/4 of the lifts (bunny hill included) didn't even have bars. So it's just natural for me to leave it up and I usually prefer to have my legs dangle than use the footrest anyway. Now there are a few passages that are kinda sketchy like the top of Falcon chair on peak10 at Breck especially in high winds. But when you think of it, the bar really isn't helping you stay on the chair, it's just there for your peace of mind.

i almost always have the bar down ,and heres why
2 year back sking with this group of really good people from my mountain having a good time and what not ,they were all throwing down .This one guy went for an under flip 5 on this jump.his rotation got fucked up somehow and the nuckled the jump right on is head .anyway he got up like a trooper and rode down to the chair lift, i was on the lift behind him and he fell off .i was like HOLY FUCK because this kid just fell 9 meters .anyway he broke his back .long story short dont get fucked over then go on a chair lift with the bar up ,you will fall off

Nowhere I've skiid at in the midwest except the six pack at granite peak has a bar, so I never put them down because they don't exist.

The only 2 times ive seen people actually fall off the lift are when they are reaching to put the bar down, or someone is putting the bar down without them knowing.

whoever puts the bar down just shows who is the least lazy in my group of friends. Nobody really argues against putting the bar down either.

ME and my bros usually put it down...cause you can chill and lean forward alot better....no worries just sitting there relaxing getting ready to kill it...

I don't know if this is just my perception or what, but it seems to me that people on the East Coast are much more prone to putting the bar down than out west. I don't know if there's a cultural explanation for it, but in my experience at Whistler/Vancouver mountains no one really gives a fuck and the bar only goes down if it's super windy or if you happen to ride up with a family whereas everywhere I've skied in the East, people have the thing down before we're even off the ground. The other day for example these little kids (age 11 probably) on the chair in front of us were screaming at me and my buddy to put the bar down as if we'd committed some cardinal sin or something. Idk, I just feel like that sort of reaction doesn't happen out west. Could be wrong though.

At the canyons on the bubble chair on a morning with fresh snow where every chair was full, the lift stopped on a long stretch between towers over a frozen pond and the chair fell like 20ft almost in freefall and then bounced for awhile, scared the shit out of me. thank god for old asian lady who insisted on putting the bar down, usually i do not.

Nobody ever leaves the bar up where I ski, though it pisses me off when people slam it down right away without looking if it's gonna whack someone (i.e. me) in the head.

All chairlifts in Sweden have bars w/ footrests

It's also mandatory to have them down and if you get caught a second (I only did it once) time when not having the bar down they pull your pass.

My hill can't afford lift bars. It really surprises me that they haven't put them in considering the amount of gapers that flood the place along with the 35-40ft drop.

when I was a little kid, i somehow got pushed off the lift by the bar coming down while i was holding on to it, so i was just hanging from the bar holding on for dear life (but thankfully i was only like 2 feet off the ground by the time the lifties stopped it). so i prefer not to bring back terrifying memories and leave the bar up, but if someone wants it down, that's fine too

i would rather have it up. more comfortable for arm rests unless it is windy. or im at mt snow. lifts there have foot rests and they are so comfy

you also have alot more leg room when the bar is up. if you put the bar down, those handle things come down on the seat and you get trapped in the corner of the chair.

I'm actually really surprised too..

The sad part is that the owners put so much energy in deeming tricks "unsafe" and banning inverts as well as urban-on style lips when they don't even have lift bars on their chairs.
It's pretty ironic in my opinion.

I mean, In VT im pretty sure it's illegal to keep the bar up, and some stuck up lifties will even stop the lift until you put it down, or yell at you over the speakers.

Another thing to think about is that pretty much every death or serious injury on a chairlift, probably didn't have the bar down. Food for thought, but obviously most don't seem to care. It's the same thing with helmets.

I ski out west and from my experience there are a lot of people who ride with the bar up.  Last weekend I was riding with some patrollers and they didn't even put the bar down.

i fell off a chiarlift at snoqualmie west when when i was 4. i think it was thunderbird or some shit like that. it was the first day i'd ever worn a helmet and i fell 30 ft to ice because i was 4 and my boot was loose so i leaned forward to adjust it and white.. all i remember is white and relaxation... then i hit the ground so relaxed because i didnt realize i'd fallen that i didnt even get a bruise. now i almost always put it down because i live in italy and all chairs have footrest and i'm lazy.

that's the biggest suprise, in sweden where it's almost impossible to sue anyone on bs like that it's mandatory to have it, but in the us where you can get sued (over exaggerating?) for walking on someones lawn they don't have bars :s

The best skiers/boarders at my mountain put it down most of the time. I put it down too. why is NS so worked up on this? it's the same thing with shoveling the stairs when doing urban
