A trip back in time... My 2012 action sports reel

Hey guys, so I just made my new action sports reel for 2012. really stoked on it. It really made me think about the past and how much my filming has changed, hence this travel back in time.

It blows my mind how much my filming has progress and it gets me really stoked. I hope you guys feel the same and i hope you like my new reel! feel free to give me any comments/critism/hate, i always appreciate feedback. Thanks guys!

its crazy how much everything has changed. the difficulty of tricks got harder, the editing styles were so different from 2008, and the quality of the camera got better each year. such a great job this year with all your edits

great work, as always evan, but what really struck me as interesting was being able to go back and contrast the different ways in which ski edits have been shot over the years.


back in the 08-09 era there was the raw, more upbeat, laidback style. before DSLRs came in hot to the skiing community, so everyone was shooting on camcorders and not nearly as concerned about DSLR problems, advantages, etc, which can be seen in these edits.

come 2010, the glitchy, overly done in every aspect (slow mo, grading, editing) style was super popular. DSLRs contributed to a need of "sharpness" that at times was hard to obtain by an HVX for instance. DSLR influence can clearly be seen in the footage.

recovering from that in 2011, people stayed as far away from that as they could, keeping colors relatively accurate, and making short, concise, edits that only showed the best of the best of their work and used slow mo as a tool to emphasize parts that needed emphasis.

come 2012, you have the flat, warm grading that in my eyes has stemmed from a lot of these superflat picture styles, and may have been affected by the lack of snow ("warm" look) not short, but very clean, and the 2:35 ratio is now textbook in some peoples eyes.


curious to see what the following years bring, but this is my personal take on how it has been. obviously everyone has their own individual topics, but it is almost impossible to not show instances of these overlying trends in ones work. i feel like ski movies (along with other material) influence the big names for making edits, like yourself Evan, and both in turn influence the people starting up, and other amateurs.

sorry for the long post, but this just inspired me to share my views on ski-edit film theory. its amazing how these trends can be seen in the edits, equipment, and even forum posts of any time.

What you have said is almost exactly how I have felt too, its wild to see trends and in what I thought was "cool" for lack of a better word. Its wild, I love it ha. Glad you're stoked too.

I don't film alot of pow stuff, I tend to like to ski it. Ha. I was going to do more this year, then it didnt snow. whoops.

and finally, just to throw this out there, I feel like the upcoming style will consist of ways to become unique and make ones footage look less "DSLR-like" as dslrs are becoming so affordable that just about anyone who wants one can get one

i like your new one! but i think last years was alot better personally, i think this year the shots kind of all seemed the same, all glidecam, while last year the song was more upbeat and the shots were different!

even, i have so much respect for you as a film maker, but theres one thing i have noticed lately after watching your edits.... they're all the same!!!

i honestly cant remember one from another, they are all shot the same way (glidecam) and the colors are always the same, the editing is always the same. i really enjoy your older edits a lot more because they are each different and unique, not to mention i like the songs better (but thats subjective) also, i think the colors were a lot more vivid in the 09-10 edits.

just sayin....

as a personal opinion, i was also going to say this. Sure, the over-saturated look may look ridiculous to film makers--but to me, it works for skiing. It gives it that fun, upbeat vibe that skiing is all about.


besides that, the shots you get are always really good, but they do get a bit repetitive with all the glidecam shots. i do tend to notice dust on the sensor whenever it's there so that's something you might also want to check out more frequently.

What were the urban shots from? Is there an edit of a lot of it or were you a backup filmer for something bigger? Just never seen anything from you that wasn't a park edit.

From a filmmaking standpoint, your most recent reel is the strongest. But you knew that already.

With regard to what people are saying about Evan's shit being the same; maybe so, but remember, he's putting out more top notch edits than anyone else. Who else has dropped more bangers this year? In each of his edits, there's a solid variation of shots, too; it's only looking over the whole collection of edits that you see that similarity. That being said, I thought he's done a good job of keeping things interesting. Camera upside down on the glidecam, for one, fucking sick idea.

Stoked on your shit, Evan. The audio in the beginning of the '12 reel is unreal. Even that you just started doing this year and it's already so much better.

Yeah, that shot is less stable/less sharp, ive also used it a couple times ha i dunno i just didnt feel it i guess. oh well.

after watching these for the first time(older ones) I can see how you went from being good cinematic-ally (if it's a word) to being mind blowing, I agree with a poster further up, the accurate colours seem a lot more enjoyable. Personally I thought 2011 could maybe have managed with being longer while still making it better, which is the first time I've ever thought that about an edit. Didn't really like 2010 for some reason, preferred 2009 tbh. That's just me.

Lol at calling the last one action sports reel. It should be called "2012 ski reel"

but none the less. Cool progression and I liked the last one, but 2:35 was annoying without a cinematic feel.

Holy shit Evan. That was insane. By far the best thing you've EVER put out in my opinion.

I've loved your grading and color correction the past two years. Much nicer than pretty much anyone's on here. Flat and slightly warm.

Normally I'm not a very big fan of your editing. I don't know why and I find it hard to put under words, but I just don't.
This years reel was on a whole other level. Incredibly smooth and your framing was just of the hook. Seriously. It was amazing. I love the aspect ratio, it had a very nice feel to it. The whole edit just flowed. It was smooth.

Lastly, the ambient sound you used was amazing. Apart from that it was clean, it enhanced the feel of the edit by, like, 300%. I'm really glad you decided to use it, because it really makes it stand out.

I'll just go ahead and watch this a time or three again, something I pretty much never do. There's only several edits I enjoy watching more than two times, and this one, sure as hell, is not one of 'em. Great work!

now that i rewatch it, there was a good amount of tripod work, so i guess ill have to take back the glidecam part, but i still liked the feel of last years better

i'd like to say something pertaining to the filming. i'm not a hardcore filmer/editor, i make a few edits of me and my friends every year with a 400 dollar camcorder and a gopro and that works fine for me.

but you've come a long way heath in your filming. you can see the shots get more and more stable in each years edit and there is less shake in every shot. in the last edit it really hit me that i didn't feel like i was watching an edit, it felt like i was watching someone ski, which i think is the point of a ski edit. on all of the follow cam shots in PC i felt like i was right there, watching the person next to me ski because i didn't have to pay attention to shitty filming to make it seem unrealistic.

Ima be honest here. I liked 2011 way more. Much better variety of shots, and it wasn't overly slow-mo'd. You're becoming too reliant on your glidecam.

Eheath lve always I have enjoyed your edits...especially when you were known as pussyfooter. Once again a terrific well shot video.

My only critique is.....why drop it before summer hits? Are you not filming at hood or anything?

As a member of this site for only a year and a half, I never experienced your earlier edits. There were a few shots in the 2010 edit that were mind blowing! The line from 1:50 to 2:04 with three skiers was incredible.

As a NS noob and general idiot, I have a question. How do you (and anyone else for that matter) get the shots on jumps such as 1:28-1:32 where the angle changes midair? Do you have a second filmer? Please excuse my stupidity.
