Rabies Vaccine

So I was in Mexico with some friends over the weekend and I was bit by a dog. It wasn't a stray dog someone owned it. The bite didn't draw blood, but made more of a dent in my skin. I am just wondering if you guys think I should get the vaccine for it or not? The disease is fatal if you don't. The only issue is you need 4 to 5 shots of it. From what I have heard each shot is around $250 dollars. The first one also needs to be done in the emergency room from what I have been told. Thoughts?

Well did the dog look like it had Rabies?
Dogs bite people sometimes because they are little pieces of fuck from satan.

Rabies is pretty rare and the signs in the dog would have been obvious (foaming of the mouth, odd behavior, no warning signs that it is about to bite you)

Some people don't have free healthcare or can't afford to see a doctor.
Not saying NS is a good alternative though

If you are comfortable with injecting any of those/the actual virus directly into your bloodstream, do it. But good immunity is what you want.

your first thought wasn't to contact the owner? they could tell you whether it has a rabies shot or not, contact their vet, etc.

i recommend that you probs see a doctor, but if it has been 3 days since the bite and you don't have any symptoms your probs fine, although it is already to late once you have symptoms...

this could have been the easy solution......now your situation is looking pretty bleak. SEE A DOCTOR! Rabies isn't something to fuck with, but mostly for your peace of mind (a bunch of shots will be nothing in comparison to worrying about what could happen). Also, sometimes people/animals don't show symptoms for up to a year.But mostly, I'm a teenager, so in all seriousness, I don't know and NS doesn't know either. Consult someone with a medical degree for your own safety :)

Rabies isn't something you want to fuck with. If it didnt break skin I wouldnt be too terribly worried, but you may want a vet or other physician to let you know how to handle the situation. Rabies shots are expensive, use a large needle, and hurt like a bitch. My dads a vet and had to get em several times, and my brother had to get em before entering vet school. So, just get a professional to help you figure this out.

First thing is, where were you bit?  If you were bit on the leg or anywhere below the knee you are in good shape, if you were bit high in the arms or worst case in the neck you need to take action ASAP. The rabies virus does not travel in the blood stream but along nerve cells which slows the progression of the virus down considerably.  You should contact the owner of the dog to see if it is up to date with rabies vaccinations, etc.  If not and you are fairly certain that the dog was rabid you need to take action ASAP.  What you need to do is go to a clinic or where ever and get titers done to see if you did in fact contract rabies.  Titers are relatively cheap blood work to see if your body has started producing antibodies against the virus and come back in 1-2 days.  This will help you avoid presenting at the ED with the possibility of having rabies as they will require you to be vaccinated.

dont risk it. I got shot for rabies when i was bitten by a bat. little fucker bit through my gloves. i was 13 when this happened not blood was drawn but it made a little pin prick. Just go and get the shots to be safe i was trippin' because of the fact you can die if you dont treat it and once the symptoms show its too late to treat.

they didn't test my blood they just gave me the shots. If i still had the bat they would have tested the bat. Its better to be safe then wrong and die.

Do you have health insurance?  If so then yeah the rabies vaccine is covered and is given as a precaution if you are bitten by a high risk animal.  OP is concerned about what to do because it appears he doesn't have health insurance, I was trying to give him the cheaper option instead of spending lots of $$$$ for a vaccine that is not needed.  Dogs are the most common source of rabies especially in mexico..

Figured I would give an update on the situation. There is no way of contacting the owner he doesn't even own a phone. So I am playing this one safe and currently in the ER waiting for my shots. I will let you all know if they suck as bad as everyone says

good to here. for me all the shots were like regular shots. But they gave me a shot in the finger where i was bitten and had to move the needle around to get all the vaccine into the area where i was bitten, now that hurt. by the time they were done my finger was swollen to the size of a sausage.
