Shell or insulated?

So im gettin a new jacket this year, probably Helly Hansen. Just wondering if you guys use shells or insulation. I usually layer, but insulation could be good i guess.

I like the shel just because you can ride with only that and a shirt if it's hot, or layer on cold days...It gives you more options.

depends how thick the insulation is. I like insulated jackets because I can just go with a shirt and my jacket on an average day, and open the vents on a warmer day. On a colder day, I might wear a fleece underneath. Shells can be nice for spring or summer skiing though.

i preefer insulated. i have a HH insulated jacket and on hot days, i can ride with a t-shirt underneath and I'm just fine. plus, it's nice to have an insulated jacket on super cold days

usually all about the shell (hoodie underneath if it's cold), but i got a real fat insulated coat this summer so i'm gonna see how that works out

I have one shell and one with light insulation that I use regularly. I personally prefer the shell, but either works. Shell is usually cheaper, so that's a plus. Just wear something underneath.

its ideally best to have 2 coats or so. cause when its really cold, a shell isnt gonna be warm, even if you have a ton of layers. i would say, go with a good midweight jacket, with good vents and breathability

i like shells, just because i gt really hot when i ski. and they give u way more options. i usually just wear a shell and a long sleeve shirt, but it doesnt get that cold in WA. if ur east coast, go with insulated

^you're a girl, girls are always cold no matter what.

i ski shells exclusively, just because I hate insulated jackets. that being said, a well made insulated jacket might be an option if you're out east, but even then, I'd go with a shell and clothing with insulative properties, like microfleece. More options that way.

i'm out east so a shell is NOT an option. ski with an insulated jacket and then open up the vents or pull the zipper down if it gets warm.

im out east and i doubt its gets colder there than it does in northern maine
i ski with a shell and im perfect. Just wear a fleece or a hoodie underneither and you WILL be fine

yeah im a huge fan of my obermeyer shell, its 100% waterproof and 100% windproof so if im cold all i need to do is layer a little bit more, its such a sick jacket because i dont have to worry about waterproofing at all, and it blocks the wind really well, so i just need to layer for warmth

also technically you shouldnt be wearing cotton like a hoodie if it is really cold, because it soaks up water like a fucking paper towel and makes you colder, so i wear hot chilis under my jacket usually, and if its extra cold ill put on a wool sweater and a fleece or somethin, cause when it gets to be around -36 at stowe wearing cotton usually isnt the best idea
