Want to get a DSLR in the near future, what are the basic things you need to know, and what should i know before buying one??

Photo or video? or both?

Make sure you have a solid understanding of:
Shutter Speed
ISO
Aperture
^Those are the absolute core essentials

As far as 'What camera should i buy?'
What are you using it for? Chances are, youre gonna buy a T2i, which is an excellent place to start. But if you dont do your homework first, it'll just be an expensive paper weight.

Here's some of the stuff you can read about, and also learn with practice:
Lenses
PLEASE DONT BUY THE KIT LENS
Read forums on here and other photog/video sites, find the lens thats best for you.
Great lens to start with is the Tamron 17-50 2.8
Depth of Field
how aperture affects it)

Lenses

going to be using it for both photography and video video mostly for skiing/snowboarding

probably shouldve mentioned this, unless youre prepared to spend at least 2000 in the next year, a dslr is not for you

It takes a lot of money to make a dslr work as a good camcorder... So if you are going for a dslr you will soon need something more...

Check out some of panasonics camcorders... shoots 1080P 60P, better than a dslr.
