Really good find, it always amazes me to see bizarre mutations like this.

He would be the next step in human evolution, potentially, but because our medicine is so advanced and we are so sheltered from the harsh realities of nature we probably will never evolve past our present state. Unfortunately it is very unlikely that humans will ever have cool cat eyes.

I expect its not necesairly an form of evolution due to their is no enviromental stress to push it to that. I would think it would be more along with the lines of an anomaly, or something that disrupted his dna, such as pollution or etc.

Right.  Developing "cat eyes" would be a rather large step for evolution.  If this were evolution you would see a gradual shift over generations.  It took humans thousands of years to develop lactose tolerance as adults which is a relatively small change,

You don't necessarily need environmental stress for evolution. It's just a mutation that occurs and makes that individual better adapted for an environment, and then that trait gets passed on through generations, ie natural selection.

But that being said, this kids eyes are just a random mutation that occurred and will probably begin and end with him.

Lol what? Yes you do. Otherwise there will be no change in allelic frequency, there will just be some random changes here and there that come or go. That's not evolution.

I'm just saying...

In order for humankind to "evolve" in the direction of his mutation he would have to have a considerable competitive/ reproductive advantage that enabled him to out survive other individuals. The mutation would also have to exist in his germ-line cells. Doubtful.

So outside of him getting some extra ass for having cool eyes its pretty doubtful there is an evolutionary advantage that would be passed to future generations.

But you won't have natural selection if there is no environmental stress. We have become so medically sophisticated and sheltered from nature that the trait of being able to see in the dark isn't going to help him survive more than anyone else.

Humans aren't really going to evolve anymore Im afraid.

i'm not an expert on evolution, and this is all stuff that i've either heard somewhere or come up with on my own, but evolution is essentially random, all kinds of different traits can appear, but only the ones that help the species survive are passed along. evolution needs survival of the fittest to continue. people pro-create no matter what, so there is nothing driving our bodies to adapt anymore.

at least i think that makes sense.

Environmental stress is certainly an aid in evolution but it's certainly not necessary. A certain color of a male could simply be more attractive to females, and all males who are not that color can fade out of the population until that species is only one color. Or individuals of one color could only mate with individuals of that same color. For example, say there is a population of one species of rabbit, and they are all black and brown. The black ones prefer to mate with other black ones and the brown ones prefer to mate with other brown ones. This continues for a long time until speciation has occurred and the black and brown rabbits are now two different species and cannot mate with each other. In this scenario there would be no environmental stressor, just a genetic predisposition for choosing a mate of the same color.

You're arguing with an evolutionary biology major.

And Amadeus I agree, we won't see any more evolution in humans.

this wouldnt cause human evolution because it provides no benefit to survive our environment. its cool to be able to see in the dark, but its not going to let him survive (on a mass-scale) better than anyone else.

I'm not a expert on evolution either, but since what traits are passed on in humans is no longer determined by our ability to survive in the wild it won't work like that. I mean, take a look around you. There's been quite a few darwin awards given out.
