Carving/all-mtn (non-twintip) ski suggestions

NS might not be the best place to ask but...I want some skis that will actually work on the ice and crappy snow of the east coast for days I'm not skiing park. Any suggestions?

-dont want a pow/ big mnt ski
-turning radius in the teens
-basically i want a ski for actual skiing

I was thinking:
-BBR 7.9
-volkl kendo
-k2 Rictor


ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I'm getting a pair of HEAD iSupershape magnums for next season in a 177. might want to take a look at them but its a lot of ski, idk how experienced you are

You wanna make big turns or tighter turns. I have been having a blast ripping carving skis with turn radius' between 11-14. Much more edge bite for the easy coast ice. If you have the money and the ski is for on groomers only, the tiger shark series from Volkl is unreal. Next years kendo has tip rocker for the first time and it raves really well as well, but the tiger sharks are ferraris!

If you want strictly hardpack/groomer skis, get some gs skis
Nothing will compare to the feel of a true race ski

Well the BBR and kendo are completely different skis.

BBR is the most fun ski that I have ever been on. Incredibly easy to ski on, basically makes linking turns effortless. It shreds everything well, trees, groomers, crud but probably wont do as well on real hard ice.

The kendo is basically a GS ski with a wider platform and a sweet graphic. If you want something that fucking rips on groomers, ice and whatever the mountain wants to throw at you then this ski would be sweet for you. Obviously not as "playfull" as the BBR would be but still a good choice.

the BBR's are actually fun? it's the weirdest shape i have ever seen, seems like a huge gaper ski but i'm curious

i'm looking for a carving ski that is also a twin. i want it to be stiff, narrow-ish radius, good hold on ice, and also good for bumps and trees, basically an all mtn east coast ripper. i've heard good things about the armada triumph and i used to have prophet 90's that were good for that but i'm up for something new

I'm 5'10" and I demoed the 186 BBR its a great ski, carves beautifully just making short turns is a bit of a chore, but such an intuitive easy to use ski

I know that I suggested 3 completely different styles of ski... not sure which directions is best to go.
the truth is, I don't know non-park skis at all.
the nordicas look sick!

more of what type of ski I'm looking for my ski to work for...
-hardpack/ icy conditions.
-skiing (relatively flat) groomers, steeps, and ONLY occasionally tree-skiing
-so I want a somewhat versatile second pair of skis
-looking to pay less than $750 for the whole setup

about me...
-ive always skied armada ar5/ar6/ar7 and nothing else
-ski stowe and holiday valley
-5'8" and 160 pounds
-ski 60-70 days a year
-id consider myself a good "type 3" skier

would a GS-style ski be the way to go?

Its not exactly what you're looking for but you can do a legend 85 for that price, and its a killer ski.

I'm a big fan of the Rossi Strato series. Strato 70 for a slalom radius and Strato 80 for a GS.

Stowe is a decent sized hill, I doubt you want a slalom cut ski unless you enjoy making roughly 1000 turns from top to bottom :p if you can demo an Atomic D2 vf 73/75 you might find that's a keeper. I found that ski adapted to whatever run I was one like no other ski. With the double deck construction, you get a ski that feels soft at low speed (a good thing) and stiffens right up when taken on a GS race course. Look into that one a bit. I think the 73 can be had for under 500 if you live in the US.

I demoed the Salomon sentinel and found it to be great for what you said. The turns didn't feel to me to be the same as the radius ( shorter) and lots of edge grip and energy out of turns

BBR's are like JJ's.. just a little bit better at sucking..

-check the atomic savage t.i
-head supershape series are awesome and fun as shit
-race stock GS skis can be had on the cheap and are damn fast and fun
-maybe look for a oversize or cheater SL ski in a 170.

Yeah salomon sentinals or the bbr 8.9 would be good for you. I would get the 8.9 rather then the 7.9, its stiffer and also sidewall rather then cap, so i find it holds an edge better. The new BBR 10 is so much fun, but may be a bit big for what your after.

In my opion dont look at a gs ski unless you only want to ski on groomers. They would be awfull all mountain, but loads of fun on hard icy slopes.

thanks for the suggestions!

I think I'm feeling either a more "GS" style ski like the Nordica Fire arrow 80TI and Dynastar Outland 80XT or i might go for the bigger mountain style ski like the Volkl Kendo and Salomon Sentinel. I got do do my homework for what will work out best.

Anyone know much about the k2 all-mtn skis?

I don't think I really need to justify myself to you bud... but if you must know...
normally 20-25 of the days each year (early season) there isn't park to be skied at my home mtn (Holimont, NY). So I'm interested in having a ski for when there is only icy groomers to be skied. DO YOU SEE THE POINT MAN?

I will not read the other suggestions, only read your posts.

Stokli stomriders. They may be a bit out of your price range... but FUCK..... soooooooo worth it. Every time I take these out, my brain orgasms with joy. I feel the same delight on hardpack and ice on these as I do on a powder day with uber floaty skis.

wtf ski did u use with an 11m radius??

sounds like pretty much any all mountain carver will be a good ski for you. dont get gs or slalom skis, is awesome as they are to rip in their own way they are shitty for anything else.
i would say somehting 75mm underfoot, 13-16 meter turn radius. and if u want to actually properly carve (as in like actually bend that fuckin ski) dont get any sort of twin tip or rockered ski

Except of course that if he has only ever skied twin tips, a true GS ski will be way too much ski for him, maybe kids ones or womens, but the 27m + radius mens GS skis are hardcore.

I'd say you would want something with a waist width in the low 70s and a radius in the mid teens, versatile but definitely carving/firm snow orientated. I like the Fischer Progressor range, Head iSupershape range is good too, plus the Nordicas you have already mentioned.

the BBR is fun? when i skied it, it felt dead and really wasn't playful at all.

I checked out the 2012/13 K2 Bolt and it rips. I had my doubts about a K2 carving ski but I was absolutely blown away. I believe it's an 18m radius. If you want something a little tighter I would check out the K2 Charger as well.

The Kendo is my favourite ski that Volkl has ever put out. Super lively and responsive from groomers to ice to a little tree action.

I obviously didn't mean that in a derogatory sense and i think you know what I mean. Yea, it's skiing even on twins, but I was just alluding to the considerably different function they are meant to have, and the corresponding difference in design

Kendos are killer, however, the new mantra 11/12 has a newer shape, and i find it more fun than the kendo.. with a wider ski come more leverage to dig that edge in to ice, slush, snow. And its even OK in powder..

I ended up demoing the kenos and the nordica steadfast and a few others when I was in breck last week. And the nordicas killed it on everything from groomers to steeps to crud. I ended up getting an unused pair of demos of them.

If anyone is looking for a legit all-mtn ski, you should check out the steadfast

i raced on them for a couple of years, crazy fun, they will throw you out of a turn if your not careful, if you don't like a ski you have to stay on, i can't suggest it though
