She hates how I act like Skiings a lifestyle?

Okay fellas (and ladies) here the deal.

So Im talking to my girlfriend as I would everyother day and I get back from skiing and we start talking about our plans for the day to come.

I tell her that I am supposed to work (Im a ski instructor in MN) and she says "well thats okay Its just like any other day... All you do is ski."

Kind of surprised and a bit unsettled I say well yeah I absolutely love skiing, and this is what shocked me. She says and I quote her word for word "I hate how you act about skiing... Its like a lifestyle."

And at this point I just want to say well hell yeah its a lifestyle! But Im not the one to start an argument so I just wave it off.... What is this!

Am I crazy or are there people out there who dont think skiings a lifestyle?!

my girlfriend says kinda that same thing. but what she hates most is when i come home from skiing and automatically go on newschoolers. Its frustrating but you just need to help her see that skiing makes you happy and you love to do it. Plus you need to find something that makes her happy and do that as much as possible.

Well, what's your girlfriend doing all winter that's so much better and more fun than skiing?

Nothing? That's what I thought.

I hate it when people are like "why do you ski so much?" because they usually also fit into the "i hate winter" crowd. Maybe if you found something that you enjoy to do when the snow falls you would stop asking me stupid questions and bitching about the snow!

To those of you arguing about the lifestyle thing. Seriously, who gives a shit what you classify skiing as. I don't understand what makes people so obsessed with categorizing things. Maybe it's a lifestyle...

...and you. You can call me whatever you want, whether it be "weekend warrior" or "someone who can ski." I love skiing, I love being on the mountain, the atmosphere, the people (well, most of them), pretty much everything about it. However, I realize that there are more important things in my life than skiing, and I'd rather not waste time trying to plan or organize my life around skiing when I have other , more important goals to accomplish. There will always be time for skiing in the future.

It so is a lifestyle! I think about skiing all day, when I'm going, what I'm gonna try, etc, pretend I'm skiing, think about skiing in general, think about the stuff I will spend my money on, etc. I mean come on! We a handrail (something that's just a railing to most people) and Imagine how we would hit it.

Skiing is a lifestyle.

Bro do what makes you happy in life. For me it is skiing. Not only are you doing what makes you happy, you are also exercising, being outside, and meeting lots of people. Also if she gets mad at you for having to go to work, which happens to be skiing, then that's a bit dumb. Not sure how I would address telling her on how you feel about skiing, but I wouldn't change your views on skiing just because of what she thinks. Vibes man!

Don't act like you're any older than early to mid 20's. You know fuck all about life. When you age/mature a bit more, you'll realize the things in life like sliding down a hill on some snow are what you should cherish and hold on to. I get it, you're at the stage where you think you're all grown up and ready to start taking life more seriously. But let me reassure you, you're still just a dumb kid with a long way to go. These 'infatuations' are what grounds you when life get's too rough. Skiing IS and can be a lifestyle for anyone.

Meh, I see where your thought process is heading with this but I bet there are thousands of instructors, mt. ops guys and patrollers who DO live skiing as a career or current fully-immersed lifestyle who would say the same.  Also it's tough to differentiate "lifestyle" from "making a living" in some cases but many are lead to the mountains by their love for skiing and riding only to end up staying and working there so there are obviously different degrees of how skiing can take over your life.      

I think skiing could just as easily be a lifestyle as pretty much anything else.  Sure, you may have other things in your life that are more important but if it's what makes it all worth it for you, then hey who cares?  We all have a "real life" but it's what takes up all your time outside of that necessary partcipation that depicts your lifestyle choice. 

I won't even get into some people thinking it means you don't have your shit together if skiing is your life.  I know many older guys who have lived their whole lives on the hill and are some of the happiest, healthiest and most fulfilled people I have ever known.  Rich?  No.  Wealthy?  Certainly.

In closing, I'd just like to say I feel bad for anyone who describes their career as their lifestyle for the most part.  I'd think for a good long while about what it would mean if you described "accounting" as your lifestye rather than "skiing" and although it may be a financially secure lifestyle, it's not one you could pay me any amount of money to live.

Unless you plan on doing something related to skiing as a profession she could have a very solid point.  I'm sure she is just worried for the long term outlook. If skiing can pay your bills then it should be your lifestyle, if it can't....it should be a hobby you love to partake in. It doesn't mean you can't love it, it just means you need a job!

Skiing can be a lifestyle you can make skiing into a career. You don't have to be a pro to make skiing into a career you can be a skiing guide, instructor, ski patrol, work in a shop or even design skis. Hell you can even get a bum job during the summer being a backpacking guide so you can ski all winter.

To AR6Rider: I understand where your coming from but there's more options in between being a weekend warrior and being a full on ski bum.  And stop being so fucking condescending your telling kids they can't do what they dream about.

Skiing is a lifestyle. but it doesn't have to be.

where i would tend to agree, he does have a point.

people take the whole hobby thing to extremes. its great to enjoy skiing and get outdoors and be physically active, but when it gets to the point where you're skiing / thinking of skiing to the exclusion of more prevalent matters, you fail.

like i said before, some people make a career out of it, but the people who don't / can't need to recognize that it's just something to do in your past time, and need to differentiate between things that you want to do and things that you need to do. be passionate about it, love it, but still be responsible and don't act like there is nothing more to life but skiing.

I'd Say skiings a lifestyle for me. I was born into a ski town, raised skiing, and yea I have left it before but I had to come back. Heck Pretty much broke up with my girl to come out here and ski. I check the snow report every night, I get out first thing on powder days and try and get atleast half a day in even if the hill sucks. I don't compete but I love to ski. I workout at the gym and train cardio as well but those things are mainly just to become more fit to help with skiing. I have nothing else to do where I live besides skiing, so if I have any lifestyle at all it must be skiing. Don't really give a shit what anyone says a lifestyle is all I do is ski and i'll ski till I die. 

P.S Btw I know exactly what ur talking about my girl got sick of me talking about skiing real fast. If you have skiing where u live then talk about other shit with her obviously, shes probably just jealous that she comes home from work dealing with a bunch of bullshit and you come home happy to have skied the whole day.

Sooooooooo many good words being said... A few not so good ones but no worries! In my opinion its as though no one person can dictate what a lifestyle means to someone else.. And if they think that it can or cant be just because youre not making a job out of it that seems weird to me as well! But I love what I see and love seeing so many different perspectives! if i had a girlfriend who thought i skied too much id probably agree. every weekday i ski from after school at like 3 until closing at 10. then on weekends i usually do 8-10 hour days.

Exactly people these days rely on material things for happiness its pathetic. I'd much rather make 15 bucks an hour and ski all winter and be able to hike and climb all summer then make 60bucks an hour have a sick car ballin house and only get to ski for 3 or 4 weeks of the winter. Even if it was in a sick condo. The people on here saying skiing isn't a lifestlye just don't enjoy skiing as much as other people.

SKIING!



Skiing is one of the most materialistic things most people can do. It requires skis, poles, (not for everybody) a heap of clothes (again, not for everybody) passes, rides or gas, meals, and a bunch of other miscellaneous equipment.

And for the vast, vaaaaast majority of us...it doesn't provide anything but happiness. And quite frankly, for me and many people, thats all we want out of it.


I'm not knocking it, I love skiing. But skiing is a very material thing, unless you're hiking up the mountain naked with your waxed tree branches rubbing against your bare ass the whole way.

Ok well you can go buy used skis and boots and everything sure its going to have a start-up cost. but once you have that its the act of skiing, and being out in the back-country that is what its all about. Like once you have the gear unless your all about style its pretty easy to go four or 5 years without replacing much. I'm just saying with skiing its not so much I'm happy because I just got the newest new skis its because I'm skiing. Weather it be on some old ass skis or on some new ones. I can come home to my shared room. in a house of 7 people as big as some studio suits and still be happy to be there because the next morning I'm getting up and hitting the slopes

Yea I guess, I just find it at lot lass materialistic then say, buying a new car every 2 or 3 years, always having the newest biggest TV, buying the big mansion that is way to big for your family of 2 or 3. Or anytime they go on a vacation has to be to the swankiest resort where they put cucumbers in your eyes and keep bringing you champagne. I'd much rather be in the same part of the world in the back of my van with a fat dooby rolled couple buddies with me and some surfboards chilling there for a couple months for less then they paid for a week.

you dont have to get a high paying job and be miserable, but it's be a little short-sighted to truly think that you are who you're going to be for the rest of your life and will never change when you're a kid. as you get older, priorities change. your life changes. drastically. it's completely unexpected and you just have to be ready to adapt. if you bank on just doing one thing for the rest of your life and eventually you want something else, or something more, wouldn't it suck to sit there and be like "fuck, it's too late. i can't do anything about it now because i didn't keep doors open".

so thats why i say enjoy skiing, but also enjoy other shit too. dont bank on just skiing forever, cause if you change, you'll have nothing except for a head full of regrets as to why you just exclusively devoted yourself to one thing and one thing alone.

lots of shit to experience in life. it's just about keeping those doors open so you aren't limiting your future based on current choices.

not when you base most of your life decisions around it. i wish I'd ski more than I do because it's truly therapeutic; there are a lot of things that will leave me feeling satisfied and accomplished at the end of the day, but going out and skiing hard pretty much takes the cake, whether or not it's shared with people. It used to be mostly stomping new tricks, but lately skiing some gnarly line clean is the most rewarding experience....I'm in school now, but I'm chomping at the bit to get back into the lifestyle of working as much as is necessary for living expenses and skiing the rest of the time.

a lot of people get off on making money and working all the time, and alot of people do that and are absolutely miserable, but for me there's really no greater satisfaction than a really good day on skis. that's cool you think some kids take skiing too seriously, but for a lot of us there's truly nothing better--it's fun, healthy, stress-free, good for traveling, meeting new people, and, overall, it's life-defining. can't express enough how much better my life is with it...the skiing itself and the culture surrounding it is absolutely insatiable.

I understand your sentiments if you're a weekend warrior-type and ended up on ns to take up your free time, but there's a whole other group of people who barely get by just working at the resort for the pass so they can ski whenever they aren't working. It's an awesome lifestyle with skiing at its core. we also like to party, hence this long drawn-out, semi-drunken rambling post.

Keep doing what you're doing, without you keeping the resorts going there's nothing keeping this lifestyle going; so thank you.
