Kelly Sildaru - Best girl skier

So maybe she doesn't have the biggest bag of tricks. But it's big.... for her age... and especially because Kelly is a girl.

She's the best because she's pushing girl's park skiing harder than anyone else I can think of. Yes, age has to do with it. Think about it... when was the last time you were in the park and saw a little kid throwing down harder than you, convincing you to send it? I could be wrong, but I'm sure the girls are watching, and I'm sure it's pushing them to go bigger.

She's also not just skiing around until the comps, and then trying to do well. She actively promotes herself, and look where it's gotten her... k2, Red Bull, Nike 6.0....

I was just talking the other day about how I've never really seen a girl do a blunt 9 that I can think of... Then she releases her season edit from last year.



Best wishes to Kelly for another banger season, can't wait to see what she will accomplish.

Kelly's dad pushes her hard and that's the reason why she's so good at such a young age. He wanted her to hit the Nine Queens jump (which had a pretty gnarly gap to fall into, if you scrubbed on the inrun). The organizers decided not to let her jump.

She's incredibly, incredibly talented and I'm sure she's going to go far in the ski world if she keeps it up. And I've got nothing against parents supporting their kids and driving them to succeed, that's how many or perhaps even most great athletes develop.

Just thought it's worthwhile to mention that there's a difference between being self-motivated, and being a nine-year-old pushed by daddy. Her dad's the one hooking up all those sponsor deals, not her.

A question: who makes all these edits for her and promotes her so well? Could this be a little unhealthy for a 10 year old girl to blow up at such a young age? If she really gets into the contest scene she could basically be dropping out of school before she knows how to do algebra

What a pity, that I was already 17, 18 when I heared about Freeski... but yeah wait till she's older. Who knows if she'll stay on the floor and still be addicted to skiing and stays on the floor

My cross-country career peaked in 9th grade despite no lack of further effort on my part. It's why you see such issues with the age limit for women's gymnastics in the olympics, with tons of the athletes still in their teens and constant scandals of girls falsifying their age.

But I suspect this will be different in skiing for awhile yet, as women haven't pushed the sport to their physical limits yet. I expect that in Kelly's case, increased air sense and familiarity with tricks gained through years of practice will more than counter the sudden awkwardness of having weight in places she never used to. Maybe her progression will slow (I'd imagine it'd have to anyways, it's insane right now) but as long as she stays passionate about skiing I believe she'll be a force to be reckoned with.

wow, that was insane. not only is she doing impressive tricks, she actually has a sense of style and progressive tricks.. 2s in, right spins, pretzels, butters... she could turn into the most badass chick ever

If she's still around in 5,6,7 years, she'll be pushing women's skiing to new limits.

BUT

that's if she still doing it. I know a considerable few people who were absolute prodigies at sport when they were this age. Going to play cricket for Australia, playing AFL, going to ski for Australia at the olympics/world cup etc. A lot of these kids lost their passion for the sport, they had loads of talent and loved it when they were little, but they retarded parents who attempt to live out their failed sporting careers through their kids. These kids lose their passion. Their sport just stops becoming fun. Often this occurs around 13-16 years of age. They hate it, it's all they do, and there's just so much expectation and pressure. And thats what concerns me about Kelly, her dad just seems way to pushy, and it reminds me of these people I knew. Kids I used to ski with and play sport with, who just stopped because they hated all the pressure, training etc. And it just wasn't fun anymore.

I came to this thread knowing who Kelly is, and expecting to be impressed, and I was still blown away by the skiing in that edit. Some of the tricks she were doing were amazing. That broken was beautiful.

And I loved her big gap on the canyons flat box. Shows she's not just spinning, but actually has some ideas of how to ski for fun.

i'll just say this... I am amazed by her skill and talent.. and I think actually the fact that a 9 year old is so damn good really is putting ladies skiing, in general, to shame.

That being said I find the fact that she is so heavily pushed and promoted by her dad to be really disturbing. He must be so obsessed with her becoming famous and doesn't seem to take into account the dangers of throwing such a tiny and fragile child onto huge ass jumps and even urban rails. Its pretty damn creepy. Furthermore.. does anyone else actually pay attention to her expressions in her edits?? She consistently looks depressed and rarely smiles.... I never get the impression that she is enjoying herself.

She has a great talent.. but I feel bad for her. It seems like her father is robbing her of her childhood simply so that he can push her into becoming a super star.

One more thing-- what the hell is that helmet?? It kind of looks like a red bull helmet.. but it says Kelly on it. Is she seriously sponsored by red bull? (forgive me if that's a retarded question.. just a striking resemblance...) That's just fucking crazy... children should not be drinking that shit.

She grew up in the former Soviet block. Don't get me wrong, but people in general tend to be a lot more timid about their emotions.

To be honest, I'm not a big fan of parents pushing their kids too hard, but I can't imagine her being so good if she doesn't enjoy it.

Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Michael Phelps, or pretty much any olympic gold medal winner, were all pushed from a very early age to be good at their sport. Especially female athletes, who tend to peak at an earlier age than males, are pushed by their parents a whole lot. There are certain lines that parents should not cross in developing their children's talent (example: Michael Jackson's upbringing is what made him one of the most successful musicians ever, but it also fucked him up), but at the age of 10, as long as she is not being emotionally damaged, her parent's encouragement/ instruction seems to be working really well for her.


Also, holy shitballs this girl shreds, and if she can stay good past puberty she is a sponsor's dream

More the fact that a 10 year old is being paid to promote a drink that she almost certainly doesn't drink is just fucking stupid. That and the fact that she is a role model for other small kids around her makes it even fucking worst. I'm thinking about the implications of stamping a 10 year old with the red bull logo.. not whether or not she drinks it.

I go to school with an Estonian.. he is 20 and smiles a fuck load more than that little girl.. and in school (school sucks..). And despite what you said (although I am sure there is some truth to it) how can you not smile when you are skiing and winning competitions over girls twice your size and age. I think anyone would be ecstatic. Unless of course they're miserable because they're parents put so much pressure on them to be the best.
