Anyone who has had physical therapy?

So i'm stuck in kinda a pretty sticky situation. I just got my cast off from a pretty gnarly wrist break! yahhh! But the only problem is my radius healed a lil bit crooked. Right now I have pretty much full movement of my wrist but in some ways and places it still hurts. Also I have to move it slow. That may just be the muscles are still weak (got the cast off yesterday) But on to the important stuff. I have two choices to deal with this injury to physical therapy and hope that the bone will fill in spots where the bone should be, or do surgery the downside about surgery is another long and terrible 6 months in a cast! So I was wondering who has had successful physical therapy?!

Surgery. See if you can postpone it till after ski season and ski with a brace, but of not do it now. It will most likely re-break if it doesn't heal correctly.

I just had the surgery ( plate And screws on right radius) about 10 weeks ago. Therapy for 8 weeks and I went dirt bike riding yesterday haha. It still hurts like a bitch though

I had shoulder surgery and then physical therapy and then it re tore now i have to do it all over again, sucks but its better in the long run

always have had good success with therapy! make sure you find someone legit. Also can you do therapy and if it fails get surgery? im a huge fan of wholistic, non traditional types of help for all injuries. in ur case you have a bone that didnt heal correctly. I have a spiral fracture of my humerus. At the time of the break i didnt have insurance and the orthopedic dr said it would generally heal the way it should without surgery so i opted out of a 30k procedure. My right arm is about a half an inch shorter and sometimes i have numbness in some fingers. All in all i think i made the right decision however if i had ins i may have chose the alternative. get another opinion and try therapy, if it doesnt work cut it open. But go hard at therapy bc thats how it works

Gonna sound hella lame... but I messed up a nerve in my right buttcheek while playing badminton, and after 3 months of physical therapy, everything was 100% back to normal. I'm a believer, but the buttcheek deep tissue massages were shitty.

I think you should get the surgery. A cast on your forearm isn't bad to deal with. If you don't you might regret it in a few years. I chose surgery over pt with my unstable shoulder.

therapy. I had the option on my shoulder to get physical therapy or surgery. I moved ligaments and tendons, dislocated, and pinched a nerve.

Pretty much all the muscle was gone and I couldnt move my past shoulder height for a month. Went to physical therapy and it was a great decision. Within a few months I was back to full range of motion and able to do everything i could before.

I will say that every now and then i aggravate it by falling onto my shoulder and whatnot. But I think I made the right choice not getting surgery.

I had the same problem after i dislocated my shoulder. After a couple months it felt fine, but it came out again when i did a gainer. Physical therapy does work very well, its just once you are release you must keep doing those work outs they tell you. I made the mistake of doing them and my shoulder dislocated 5 more times due to my own wrecklessness. The 6th time tore all the ligaments and muscle so i had no options. Those exercises are most important.

Great Thanks guys! ill try surgery once ski season is over also summer is easier to have a cast because of no school work...

Just throwing this in here for anyone who's doing physio or having problems with a recurring injury right now....
Dislocated my shoulder years ago and its been giving me problems ever since, but I've started doing a little yoga recently and its never felt better. If you have tendon/muscle/joint problems give it a shot, you might be surprised.

Not necessarily true... Bones are always stronger after they heal, even if slightly crooked or if they have bump. Generally that happens when you need surgery in the first place and they set it wrong.

My hand is super crooked... never bothers me and never really hurts unless I fall on it funny. Just do the PT and deal with the crookedness. Another surgery means SO much more damage + PT at the end of that anyway...

I've had a few casts and it always hurts for a while after you get them off because you haven't moved it in so long... Don't jump to any stupid decisions and get a surgery you don't need.

You've had your cast off for a day and you want surgery right away? I know medicine is fantastic these days but geez dude, give it a minute... Surgery could fuck that up WAY more, not to mention the extensive PT you're going to need after surgery. Maybe give self-healing a try with PT first? Plus, surgery could give you mega arthritis and mad scar tissue which FYI... is pain for life.

As you can tell mr wrist is still a bit crooked and the marks are from the brace...
My arm is feeling way better today defiantly doing the PT.

my sister's a in a PT program; that would suck to have to give deep tissue butt massages to random people

if you can avoid surgery, why do it?

I had the option of doing PT or getting surgery when I type III separated my shoulder a few years back, and I enjoyed the experience so much that I changed my major to pre-PT. Never been happier.

It just makes perfect sense to me. If you have pain thats associated with or caused by muscle weakness, why not treat it by strengthening the weak muscle groups? Common sense eh? I guess not in the American medical paradigm.

If anybody has any PT questions, PM me. I might be able to answer a question or two, but when in doubt go see somebody who's licensed and knows their shit.

You're right, the point where it breaks usualy heals the strongest. However the rest of the bone is weak due to stress on it and a re-injury is likely in the first year or so because of that. I broke mine twice in one year, less than an inch apart. First break I opted out of surgery because I was still growing and the growth plate may have cause issues in the healing. I strength trained and PT'd my arm but it was still very weak. 10 months later i got hit in hockey and snapped it again just below the original break. I decided surgery was a must, and healed twice as strong in half the time. I am a firm believer in surgery becasue ive also gotten an ACL repair. Next time i break a bone, i will be requesting for surgery right off the bat.
