Opiate Withdrawal/Post ACL surgery..need help!

My hellish backstory:

On Dec 20th I had surgery on my ACL and meniscus and post surgery I was in a lot of pain. My surgeon prescribed me a 5mg opiate "1-2 every 4-6 hours as needed for pain". To me this meant 2 every 4 hours and I was pain free up through Christmas. Christmas day was the first time I had stopped taking 10mg every 4 hours and took the day off. I had a couple beers and a couple glasses of wine throughout the day. Around 8 I felt like complete shit and headed off to bed.I woke up covered in my sweat and with a fever. I continued taking 2 every 4 hours through the 2nd. My mom was concerned, but every time I would decrease the dose the pain would be unbearable.

The 3rd is when everything collapsed on top of me, when for the third day in a row I went to bed at 8 with a fever, pain, shivers and sweating along with feeling like I had no energy. My mom took me to the ER to get to the bottom of it. After waiting and waiting and waiting my stress level hit the roof, and along with having no food in my body I hit a fever of 103.5 and lost the feeling in my entire body. I mean this with great emphasis. My face was vibrating at 50,000 rpm's as it went numb. The ER doctor took two blood samples, a chest x-ray and a urine test. After the x-ray and urine test came back negative he declared that my knee was infected. We had thought that might be the case even though my leg would bend without pain and my knee looked healthy. So he tapped my knee twice only to get 3CC's of blood and what not.

Next day I get a call that it is infected. I go to the surgeon to find out that it actually isn't..wtf? right? I guess my white blood cell count was 11,000, which is high, but normal post surgery. Infections are serious at 30,000-50,000.

Opiates to blame:

So I'm left without answers and upon googling my symptoms I find that opiates have been causing how I've been feeling. On the 4th, around the same time I figure this out, my ACL/meniscus pain stops, but I'm left with shivering, sweating, and insomnia. I started taking 1 every 6 hours and felt really shitty with symptoms persisting. Friday I only took one, yesterday 1/2, and today I'm off them completely. I still feel completely helpless and miserable. How long can I expect this to last? Is there anything I can do to help me feel better?

BTW I have researched this all extensively, but all the info I find is with people who are extreme cases, you know, taking 80mg dose for years and such.


Sparknote:

First day w/o opiate, timeline:60mg for 12 days then 5mg then 2.5mg today nothing, constant shivering and sweating. oh and doctors suck.. Any advice/similar experience?

you can't become physically addicted to that small of dose THAT quickly.

5mg in ~20 days? that really isn't anything.

I had a fucked up time coming off of morphine, make sure your hydrated and have sufficient blood sugar, it can kind of help with the "crash".

you're sick from the infection, you're not addicted.

if you think you have a substance abuse/addiction problem go check yourself into rehab. now.

take a lot of benzos if you can get your hands on them they definitely help with the shit feeling and sweating and shaking, and you should feel fine in a week easy, there is not that much you can do opiate withdrawal though, shit sucks

you can expect to feel the effects of opiate withdrawal for 3-4 days max if this is your first time withdrawing. you didn't use long enough to sustain a serious habit. yes, it's certainly long enough to become physically addicted, but you're not stuck at the bottom of the worm hole yet by any means.

if i were you, i'd eat xanax and sleep for the next three days and you'll be fine. quit now, because it only gets worse the longer you're at it. opiates are no joke, dude.

You would be to if you felt like I do. After 5 days in the lap my blood grew no infection. You are not informed and a person of no value to this thread, please stop posting, you are not helpful

dude, good to hear. It's weird that I've had these symptoms for a week now and they have been common symptoms of withdrawal, but I am lacking nausea, watery eyes, and a couple other symptoms. I guess everyone doesn't get all of the symptoms, but still feeling as shitty as I did a week ago

if you've been clean for a week, and are still feeling shitty, it's not opiate withdrawal. a 3-4 week run on some percs isn't long enough to produce withdrawals lasting in to the week+ range. if you were on a long acting substance like 'done, then it'd be a different story, but not a short acting agonist like ox.

It could be from the opiates, but luckily for you you aren't taking that much, if you quit taking them completely you'll feel shitty for a few days to a week. Opiates are really fucked up man and even at a low dose you still can get addicted. If you really find yourself not being able to stop ask around and try to find a suboxone I wouldn't really recommend doing one but they make you not want to do opiates and relieve the withdrawal symptoms. But good luck opiates are really fucked up

good shit, dude. give 72-96 hours and you'll be as good as new. for short term relief....benzos, beat off, and sleep as much as possible. get out and get some exercise as quickly as you can...it'll get those natural endorphins flowing again.

you think im trying to claim badass? those two years ruined every aspect of my life and i almost lost skiing too, that's what saved me life, skiing. im ashamed of everything ive done and im in rehab working on trying to piece my life together. maybe once you get beyond the age of 14 you might understand the struggles that come with addiction. until then, try and show some respect, kid.

I had surgery december 8th. I went through almost 70 7.5-325 percs in 2 weeks. I only took them at night around 6 and just iced my leg for pain all day.


How much do you weigh? Height?



Honestly just stop taking them for 2 days and you will be fine. The only withdrawals I had were an aching back. A cold sweat is part of the game with opiates. drink a lot of water.


I don't know about that whole hospital thing. Doesn't seem like something that would happen for taking the prescribed dosage.

OP should probably not listen to anyone in this thread and just stick it out with....his surgeon. It seems like thats the best course of action. As opposed to trying to get a hold of benzos, or decide himself if his knee is infected or not or if he has an opiate problem. You all are ridiculous.

Also, the only thing I have to add that I feel like most people don't realize when they have surgery is....you WILL have pain. The pain pills are to take the edge off, make it not unbearable. They are NOT to get you stoned or feeing like a million bucks. You were just dissected and put back together, you need to deal with a certain amount of discomfort while rehabilitating.

Bro I drank 3 gallons of diesel every day, would go on a cycle of eating only chocolate for one week and then nothing for two weeks. It mellowed me out during my three year ecstasy binge.

I suffered from sweating and insomnia after my knee surgery.  I was prescribed hydrocodone and aceteminophene.  I took them for a few days, but then stopped because I was afraid I would get hooked.  I think the symptoms I  was suffering from were a result of the anesthesia.
