VOTE: Edits in ski gabber or not?

Take a stand, vote one way or the other and speak your piece. Keep it respectful and keep this discussion high brow.

I vote to ban edits from ski gabber, and place pressure on us to make better ways to see new stuff that is out.

personally i have no problem with it. sometimes i see some edits in ski gabber that i wouldnt have seen if they werent in there.

i vote against people posting their edits. if somebody wants to post two different ones to have a discussion about them, or compare styles, thats fine

I vote delete, but what happens if there is a video on zapiks or another similar site? What is the stance on embeding videos that arnt yours onto the video section?

it doesn't bother me in the least. it's a good way to have a discussion about the videos. sure, video pages have a comment section... but you're not notified when more people respond and an active dialogue would be hard to have. allowing them in ski gabber also self-moderates in that mediocre ones won't get as many responses (unless they're just THAT terrible)

that said, i definitely understand why so many people oppose it. it's not that big of a deal to me and will in no way have a tremendous impact on my overall satisfaction with life

i vote no.

you guys just spent so much time and possibly money, well definitly money since time = money, into the video section we need to promote its use.

now if someone asks for advice on their editing teir is a perfectly great spot in the forum for that called media and arts. it doesnt get many views ay more but still where they belong.


also, is auto play allowed now, because i see posts get deleted with it all the time, but the dew tew footy thread in ski gabber has auto play in the op and was left untouched.

I vote ban them. There is no real reason to lessen the impact of the video section and to clutter the foruns.

Your argument is based off of the old system though. You have to keep in mind that the new video section does way better job at choosing the best videos to watch than the old one.

When i posted a short video, it got me a lot of recognition and great feedback that I dont think i would have got if it was in the video section. I vote to NOT ban it.

I don't mind ski grabber as it is. Posting videos is frowned upon, except for the occasional edit by from an orange name that slips by cause most kids don't wanna shit on a pro. If NS were to let it go, there'd be no line between the edits you want to see and some 12 year olds go pro edit that he wants more views on, and sg would become a shitty, crazy ass video section.

ban the shit out of them, no question.

as much as i have been an advocate against people hating on others for posting them in threads .. the video section is there for a reason. until there is a rule/ban on posting though, there is no need to police/terrorize people for posting them there.


im all for edits being posted in the videos section and only there.

Do this, I don't mind the fact that there a videos in SG, it's just that it is really unfair for all the other videos that are uploaded in the actual video section that don't get the coverage that the should.

It is just to easy to post your video in SG to promote your crapy/good/really good video that is embedded from Youtube/vimeo/zapiks.


Doesn't have anything to do with the OP but I was thinking of a thing the other day, NS has a video player that is almost as good as Vimeo's, and I'd find good if there wouldn't be any more embedded videos. There could maybe be a function on the NS uploader to grab a video from Youtube/Vimeo/Zapiks without having to upload it from your desktop, just add the link of the youtube video and it gets uploaded to NS. And technically I'm pretty sure that it is possible same kind of thing as this only it downloads it to NS http://savevideo.me/fr/ . I was thinking of that and had to get it out there.

I don't think many people creating videos would be happy that someone else actually uploaded their material without permission. Not sure, but feels like it could be an issue.

i personally don't mind having them in SG, right now people are always bitching and moaning about how everybody is going to start posting their edits in SG and quite frankly, i don't see it happening....

i think just like with all the rest of NS it's best if we moderate it like we're doing now instead of simply delete every edit from SG .

as long as people aren't shamelessly plugging their own videos to get more views i don't have a problem with it .

I realize that once again this would be a bit of a grey area in our rules, but honestly, i like it the way it is right now, we're not having to clean edits from SG by the dozen and it's still rolling fine !

i'd vote ban it, maybe have an orange name section of video uploads to have them more recognisable so you don't have to trawl through front flip attempts to find a specific edit

This, although I don't mind seeing a new edit that is original and creative, it just isn't fair to all the other people who didn't put the videos on ski gabber. So I vote NO EDITS IN SG :(

HAH - though off-topic this is a major fucking mis-conception that people have.

When you upload your shit to these services most of the time you're putting it out into the pubilc to do whatever teh fuck people want with it. Unless your shit is private and blocked, yeah we could absolutely grab your video through the API and post it wherever we damn well please.

We DON'T do that because we respect Video creators. However, people are way off when they think they own their content after putting it on YouTube.

Total side issue... but gets back to the idea of supporting someone that supports skiing. If you have a copyright complaint you can call me. Good luck calling someone at YouTube.

To add to this discussion from what I'm seeing is that there is a reason WHY people want videos in ski gabber... its isn't about the discussion, its about having an easy way to find good stuff.

We can probably cook up a method that you can more easily come across good edits (without having to click 'videos') without having ski gabber clogged up with threads. If we open the flood gates on this, it will be pandora's box. Since posting in ski gabber will now be the way to see videos, and people will want views on their vids, anyone posting vids will post in ski gabber. THen that will happen to photos, reviews... hell anything.

To summarize - prominent and easy discovery of good stuff is the issue, not necessarily that having videos in forums is a better way to view videos.

I don't know if you mean the same thing, but I meant (understood) more like what Joris said, that we should download videos of wherever and UPLOAD them on NS under whatever account.

I think it would be pretty weird nowadays if, say, Nipwitz posts their video on Vimeo first and then someone just grabbed it and uploaded it under "sick vid i found of rail ski" by member 'lol_i_are_skier_cat_omg' or something along those lines. Maybe it happens already, you know better.

i think they should be banned except things like asking for help with x trick, heres a vid of me trying, what am i doing wrong? it's a gray area. i don't really think they should be allowed in opening posts or anything but if its relevant to the topic thats fine, but overall, nah

i say get rid of edits in ski gabber. upload them to the video section, discuss them in ski gabber. if the ultimate goal is for the video section to flourish, this is pretty much the only option. hell my roommate and i were looking at old shitty edits he posted from 2006 and they had like 10,000 + views. these days the views are under 1,000 for an insanely good edit, and only hit big numbers if the video reaches front page status.

it's tough when people post edits in ski gabber that havent been uploaded to the video section, so that's a separate issue. if someone uploads a video to the video section and then embeds it in a thread, do those views still count?

it's going to be hard to monitor, but if people upload their edit and then LINK to it in a thread, discussion will occur and the video section will start to thrive again.

Sorry, I was on a bit of an off-topic rant there I think. : )

I do really agree that its very important to have things that people upload be stuff they own. I want to make sure that everything is legit, as yeah it would be super lame if people were just posting whatever from wherever. We want to have a community where quality talent gets recognized.

also, i know you guys are trying to embrace the new uploader/revamped vid section, but can we change the default setting so that you always see uploaded and embedded? i feel like tons of good edits get looked over because they havent been uploaded to ns. i feel like laziness coupled with teh fact that it just isnt very obvious contributes to the lack of views and popularity of embedded videos. since theyre embedded, they get put in threads to gain the exposure that they arent getting initially.

Not until people have given NSTV a fair chance. Remember, the absolute KEY to the reason we want to push people uploading is because we can have a system like the NSTV Guide. If you haven't tried it, then try it.

Pushing uploads is all about NSTV. We can not smoothly integrate embedded videos into the entire ecosystem we have created here. Give it a try, its a totally awesome viewing experience.

Bottom line to this issue is that I think video galleries need more exposure. We're working on a couple of ideas in the lab right now, and we'll see if we can sneak a fix out the door.

In the meantime for anyone who wants edits in ski gabber or embeds by default... please go and give NSTV a chance. See the vision behind it, and understand why we have to get people away from embedding.

yeah i mean i totally agree with your vision and the entire thought process behind it. i just figured i'd check, since i think that's a large contributing factor to people making threads about edits on vimeo. i've used NSTV a bunch and it's super legit.

my vote is to get rid of edits in Ski Gabber, but maybe create a sticky where people can post links to their edits, without creating threads and cluttering up the forum.

Top Videos and Top Pictures on the homepage. I like it, but there is just to much stuff happening on that homepage and I usually don't spend much time there, I mostly look if there is a new news. I got use to not pay attention to the little panels under the news .
But having the 5 best pictures/videos is cool.
