I watched it last night and it was a harrowing experience. The Americans who fought in Vietnam are some of the most bad ass people who ever lived and yet their story is one of the most tragic at the same time.

The History Channel really out did themselves on this one. Did anyone else catch it?

It was a stupid war, but the men that went anyway were indeed some of the realest men. A few days ago, it was the 8th of November. There's a Big 'n Rich song about it, and I don't care if it sounds corny, every 8th I play that song, let a tear out, and throw a few back in memory of those guys. Haven't seen the documentary, I'd love to watch it.
One of my biggest influences in my life was an old mountain man named Pat, kinda ended up being my surrogate father in a lot of ways. He was a SeaBee in the navy, served four in the Da Nang, and said he almost lost his mind. Mattress patching bombed ships under fire, at night, under water for hours at a time, alone, welding with total focus, totally alone... he tells some gut-wrenching stories. He came back to the states and lived in a tipi for a decade or so because he was too shell-shocked to live in normal society. He now drinks heavily and makes beautiful art at his cabin he built himself. Awesome fuckin guy.

What the hell do you know and how is your stupid picture revelant. War is terrible is that your point? I'd love to see pictures of the worst things the Vietnemse did to our boys I bet they would be so heinous you they wouldn't be published... If you don't think the people who did dirt on our nations behalf in Vietnam were bad asses you probably don't truly understand what went on their... Or is your point that no one fighting in war is bad ass... Probably hippy scum. It's veterans day have some fuckign respect

you're a dumb motherfucker. i know a vietnam vet. didn't have a choice. was drafted. he was in the navy.

his superior told him to shell the beach.
didn't have a choice.

so as he was looking through his view finder to assess the hit, he had to watch a mother and her child get vaporized. he knew then the war was bullshit and the only way he can find peace within himself are the summer days he spends out on pacific ocean, by himself fishing tuna.

my point is, all these men were put into extraordinary circumstances that perhaps did things that they knew wasn't them, but did the best they could with the information they were given. their mind, their idea of right and wrong was of no matter to the people that told them to carry out their jobs. they were thrown to the wolves by the lions.

Vietnam in itself is one amazing place, if any of you get the chance to go, do it, it will change your life.

Plus, when you go there and see things like the tunnels you realise the Vietnamese were crafty fuckers, there was no way you Americans were ever going to beat them, yet i respect every American soldier for going out their and doing their duty.

I have utmost respect for the veterans of the Vietnam War for what they went through. But to say any aspect of that war was bad-ass is a heinous thing to say. The tactics and weapons used on both sides are absolutely nothing to be proud of. TV shows shouldn't be glorifying a complete failure for almost everyone involved. I realize it's a bad day to get into any sort of debate about warfare, but history seems all to easily forgotten. The moment you start glorifying terrible points in the past, history will have a greater chance of repeating itself.

Try reading what he said again.  He didn't say war was bad ass, he said the men that endured it were bad ass (as any vet is).  Big difference in what he is saying and what you think he is saying.  No one, him nor the show, is glorifying any aspect of the war besides honoring the men that had to fight and die in it.  If you think that a show that does a good job of showing a part of history, whether it be good or bad, is wrong then you need to wake up.

History channel did a good job, and you should try watching something before you form an opinion on it.  If you watched it before throwing down an assessment, you would have realized what he meant.  It didn't sugar coat any of the uproar or sneaky political shit that occurred.

It's main purpose was to tell the stories and experiences of the men that fought it.  The story of their war.

Vietnam came out communist, they still are communist. US, along with all other anti-communist countries involved, failed.


It's easy to say war is good when one has never been directly affected by one.

I do not take my freedom for granted. I pay my respects on Remembrance day. Walking through the university today I was the only one around me who stopped and stood for 2 minutes thinking about those who have died for me to be able to be here, be free to study what I want, and go home and listen to the music that I want.

I vote. The half of Canadian and US citizens who do not vote are taking their freedom for granted. Lost of whom then bitch and complain about their government and country.

Communism can be terrible. War is terrible. That war in particular was incredibly terrible.

Vietnam was a proxy war it wasn't as much about the South maintaining a democratic gov. That was just the public mission. Really we were trying to bleed dry communists lines of support to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Communist China from the Soviet Union. Trying to break their ability to support multiple fronts. And we did succeed economically proxy wars like this and Afghanistan bled the soviet union dry along with mismanagement at home. We also out produced and invented them... In the end Eastern Europe, the Balkans and Batlic states were liberated and the red threat suppressed. It was a global war and we won Vietnam was just one front. Go to Eastern Europe and tell people we failed....

Yugoslavia had nothing to do with the Soviets. they fought their own war. They lost their own lives. NATO did help out though.

Eastern Europe is grateful they're not under the Soviets. My grandmother had a lot of family sent to Gulags and killed during that time. They lost millions of lives.

Relating these to Vietnam to justify a loss is pulling at strings. Vietnam was not just a battle in the Cold War. It was a 20 year war of its own.

Also not saying US weren't fighting the good fight. They knew what had to be done, and they did it. God damn happy and proud to be the northern neighbours of them for their stance on communist regimes, even if every so often they took it a bit too far.

I'm not sure you understand what the Cold War was.. Vietnam was certainly a proxy war and product of US-Soviet tensions... Not a battle it's own regional war. The United States would never have been involve d if it weren't for the on going cold war and Vietnam took place in the midst of the Cold War. I'm not sure what your getting at

there's a reason napalm was banned for use on civilians and many other incendiaries banned altogether by international law shortly after Vietnam. You don't need to be there to know they took it a bit too far.
