don't get a flying squirrel they sleep all day and play all night.
I would say get an normal squirrel, or perhaps something super sick like a coyote or wolf.
Of course you would need a permit but dude, a fox or something sweet like an ocelot would be awesome.

A lynx, I know a local vet who has a pet Lynx and it's the most awesome pet ever.
It's just like a cat only bigger and awesome looking. And they are incredibly sweet and laid back.
