Herman Cain.  Hands down.  This man has an outstanding resume, I doubt will be heavily influenced by his financial contributors due to his careers OUTSIDE of politics, which some may view as a negative but not I.  The fact is the man has turned around 3-4 major companies on the verge of bankruptcy.  Check out his resume http://www.israpundit.com/archives/40345 

Any thoughts?  Unless Obama decides not to run for re-election (which is almost looking possible), the next president will be a GOP nominee. 

Politics and the economy have become a growing interest of mine.  I would appreciate any feedback from everyone, liberal or conservative.  Please share your thoughts on the current GOD candidates.

very true, but to be fair romney did an amazing job as governor of Massachusetts balancing the budget through spending cuts and closing corporate tax loopholes for increased revenue. they also reformed a lot of their health care while he was governor.

but on social issues they are both pretty nutty.

I don't agree with his health care reform in Mass.  Laid the groundwork for Obummer Care.  He is flip flopping all over the place on this particular issue.

I have no idea what you are talking about in regards to social issues.  The federal government, in my opinion, has no place being involved in social issues in the first place.  The only social issues I really care about is reforming Social Security, which will obviously backrupt the country faster than...I don't know...Speedy Gonzalez? 

Social issues should be left to state government across the board.  Gay marriage has absolutely no business being a federal issue.  If you don't like that gays cannot marry in your state, move the hell out to a state that does!  A federal marriage laws will ultimately create a lot of anger/hatred throughout the country.  No matter if pro/anti gay marriage law.

I agree, he will definitely need to shore up his views on foreign policy.  All I have heard is that he will stand by Israel.  To be honest, foreign policy is the least of my concerns with the upcoming election.  Economy and job creation are the only issues I am really concerned with.  Our current Pres. doesn't have a clue on how to fix either.

your absolutely right about romney flip-flopping. and i should have been more clear that i wasn't trying to say anything good or bad about how he changed the system i was simply pointing out that he did change it.

i 100% disagree with you about the federal government not having a place in social issues though. if it didn't then who knows how long segregation and slavery would have lasted in the south. you're right that a federal law to allow gay marriage will make people angry, but people said the same thing about a federal law mandating that states allow interracial marriage. a lot of people will be pissed off, but thats politics.

and to be clear i'm not voting for either of them, i just want this to be one of those rare ns political threads that actually has some intelligence and honest discourse to it.

and on a side note cain's tax plan is a bit out there.

The thing is foreign policy IS a big deal. The economy is certainly the number one issue in this election, and the way we keep dumping money into the middle east is going to negatively affect the economy. We need a president with sound conservative economic policy who will also improve the economy by getting us out of the middle east. If only there was a candidate like that.....

It would be WONDERFUL if this could be possible. Unfortunately though, the hot-button social issues are what politicians use to drive their numbers through the roof and secure elections. They are emotional topics, and emotional topics are what people pay attention to.

Because of his resume.  He turned around Burger King from the verge of bankruptcy.  He then did the same for Godfathers.  He has been a problem solver his entire life and that can't be argued.  The man's credentials are all you need to see to know that he has the ability to turn everything around.

I disagree.  Social issue's drive the democrats through the roof.  Libetarians and conservatives, from the best of my knowledge, do not use social issues to drive their polling numbers. 

Social issues are most effective at the local level, least effective at the federal level.

Go to the south and ask them how important abortion is when voting for a candidate. Many of them will tell you it's their number one issue. In a sane world social issues would have minimal bearing on the election of an official. Unfortunately there are far too many religious fanatics in this country for that to be a reality.

Paul then Cain would be my vote. Ron Paul is the best candidate we have right now if the US is going to succeed. The Fed is out of control and needs to be stopped and it seems like Paul is the only one willing to do something about it. Bring the US back to a democratic REPUBLIC. Give power back to the states and keep the Fed out. I want to see a dramatic downsizing of big Government and Ron Paul is the one who will do it. I can only hope there are enough like minded people out there who want change to vote for Ron Paul.

Ok, I'm officially whoring my own thread. 

You do have a point in regards to segregation.  Marriage laws are on a whole different level though.  I believe that if federal laws are enacted on marriage laws, the result will likely be violent.  Why does our entire country need to live under one law in regards to marriage?  That is not the way the country was designed. 

As far as the tax code, I don't know enough about taxes in general to have a strong support or disapproval of the matter.  But it definitely puts everyone on an even playing field.  That is something that is necessary.  I can't comment on its effects on lower income households.  I do believe the fair tax is the best option, and this is a step in that direction.

Provide an example then.  I am 23, and have just becoming interested in politics over the last 6 months, so my knowlege of politics in general is still in its infancy.  And I may have to clarify my previous statement.  I believe the social agenda is different from conservatives compared to liberals.  I think the dems try to push for as much federal law as possible to increase the size of government in this country.  I think conservatives do the opposite.  I maybe way off though.  I just wish more politicians would have a more libetarian view of social issues.  State's ought to decide social issues, not the feds.

Well gay marriage was made a national issue in Canada and legalized nationally and so far that has worked out very well for us. There has not been any hate and anger throughout our country but maybe that is just because we are more accepting than you guys.

I didn't claim I could fix the economy.  I do believe the Herman Cain knows how to fix the economy.  I said I don't know enough about the tax code to determine the outcome of the 9-9-9 plan.  No economist has the answer to that question yet either.  Thanks for your input, you have made everyone a lot smarter.

The fact of the matter is that Americans are extremely diverse in their social views. From extremely liberal to extremely conservative social values. It's not like Canada where the majority of the people are reasonable and socially liberal, and those that aren't won't flip a lid to two men getting married.

In America the crazies from the south would go ape shit if gay marriage were legalized nationally. It's just the way it is, unfortunately. So... why not have a country where each state is able to pick it's own rules, and you can choose to live in whatever state has the strongest fit of your moral values. Or just not give a shit and live wherever geographically you choose. It gives you a choice to live in a society that fits your moral compass, no matter who you are.

Canada is not the USA.  I couldn't care less what the Canadian government is pushing.  The USA is a free country, and forced acceptance or non-acceptance of gay marriage on a federal level strips some freedoms does it not?  Why not have state by state laws on marriage?  That makes the most sense to me.
