the only useful thing canada has done was invent the zipper but america topped them with velcro...BITCH

epic night. doesn't get much better than Canada day. and I heard the figure was there were over 300,000 people out on the streets around parliament hill. that's 1/100th of the country.

so the record crowd was 460,000 in 2008. from what I've read now, so far NCC thinks this year broke that record. Meaning about 1/70 Canadians. to put that in perspective, if that were the US that would be a crowd of 4.3 million in Washington DC for Independence Day.

Downtown was hella busy during the day (as usual) and the festival was INSANE. I personally didn't find it overly busy during party hours though, it seemed relatively dead for Canada Day. Thoughts?

american prick...Canada isnt a monarchy, its a democracy (even though there is NO such thing as democracy, pm me if you would like me to reason why) The queen has no power or influence in the house of commons or senate, people choose to make a big deal out of the royal couple and what not because without Great Britain, Canada wouldn't be the greatest fucking nation in the world like it is..

Well actually we are a Constitutional Monarchy Parliamentary Democracy. Technically speaking the Governor General (David Johnson) is the head of state as he represents the Queen/King.

In the British North America Act, which granted us our independence in 1867, it also laid out governing rules as well. The BNA essentially granted Canada Dominion status up from our current territorial status prior to 1867. It basically meant that while we were free to make our own decisions and govern our own people we were still linked to Britain through the monarch and all of our foreign affairs were still controlled by the British. So if the UK started a war with someone we would automatically be dragged into it. It wasn't until after our huge contributions in WWI that we would become totally independent and free of the last remaining shackles of the British government.

Back on track though...

In our constitution it states that the Governor General will remain the Head of State and to which he will appoint a Prime Minister to lead the people and make decisions for the country. So technically yes, the Queen is head of state and yes the Governor General does actually have powers which he will never use because it would go against all foundations of democracy. So yes he could technically fire the Prime Minister and through Joe Blow in charge he never would, and never ever has. Instead the Prime Minister tells him who WILL be appointed and he does it symbolically.
