why would athletes drop thousands of dollars to fly across the world and do a big air comp, when they could literally do the exact smae thing in whistler...where a ton of there friends, and buddies live. On top of that, WSI wont kill 1.5 weeks of prime filming time.

    Exactly what I'm thinking! I'd expect new things to go down at JOI but nothing special in whistler. I reckon plenty of the whistler guys are going to be gutted to miss one of the best chances of the year to 'progress'.

    Because it's not just a comp? JOI in 2007 was some crazy progressive shit the whole week! Kids said it was the best jump they'd ever hit and have been LONGING for that same experience insteas of huge pressure of a video comp.

    Just jamming away until the comp goes through, what could be better?

    where is tim mchchesney, dale talkington and aidan sheahan??? i mean why should they not go there when they take part at the ns qualification? we had 7 spots and i only see 4 of the guys that we picked in this list :(

    You guys realize WSI is a platinum level AFP  comp, and JOI is a gold level right?

    People arnt skipping JOI to be assholes, theyre doing it so they can get Higher rankings with AFP..

    this guy knows EXACTLY whats up.    kids need to realize that a lot of these skiers need the points, as opposed to a big air.  from the super pros to the up and comers (like dale, timmy, etc), they will benefit much more from the AFP points then the big jump. 

    not to mention a plane ticket out to sweden isnt cheap on short notice..

    The thing  I'm a little bit confused on, is the WSI is an "Invitational" event for slopestyle and Big air, so not everyone can compete if I'm not mistaken. Degree Superpipe is the only open event. How can you improve your rankings in the AFP if you aren't competing in the WSI?

    Pretty lame that a lot of people bailed on JOI for WSI. WSI definitely has its history but I don't doubt that a lot of the guys who didn't go to JOSS last year or the year before secretly hate their sponsors for convincing them to do WSI. I know if I were in their shoes I would give the finger to WSI and convince my sponsors that I'd learn a lot more from JOI.

    There have been plenty of points made. People i know going to WSI were not forced by their sponsors either, they chose to go to WSI for JOI.

    Fair enough- you'd know better than I would. I guess I'm just bummed more than anything to see Jon build a jump that would lead to progression getting overtaken by a basic, non-original comp like WSI. WSI will be sick, but I just feel like the progression built around JOI would be better fitting to the athletes. They would likely learn a lot more and be better off in the long run than competing in just one more slope comp- like they don't get enough during the season as is.

    people don't understand that the reason everyone "flaked" was for afp
    would u pick platinum or gold?
    not too mention most of those going to whis to compete are from north america, there for flights are pocket change to some big name athletes...
    plus if you have looked at the thread on afp there is lots of cash for the taking on top of the points to be received...
    it not all about making the spectators happy... especially considering those complaining are probably just going to be sitting around watching some shitty live feed!

    If I could spend time sessioning one of Jon's jumps, I'd realize that it was worth more than a platinum rating in afp. How many people get paid for doing well in afp? If you're out of the running, would you rather learn something new or just sit in your same position while learning nothing?

    ya would you rather spend thousands of dollars to go to a competetion and not win much money, or spend a few hundred and win some money, make your sponsers happy, and be able to ski more and have to work less during the summer/fall?

    comps are how skiers can afford to go "ski for fun" on their own time.

    Alright, so in the greedy world of freeskiing, even the biggest stars will bail for a couple of g's? JOI might give skiers a chance in the long run, but they're too obsessed with the cash in the short run, end up at WSI, and it'll hold them up for a few months.
