What's the worst part of your skis?

Okay NS,

So I am a junior mechanical engineer and I have a senior design project that I am looking into. I will be looking into ski design to fix one problem in todays park ski. I wanted to get a feel for the most common problem you see with your skis. I know delaming is going to be pretty popular but if you can look a little deeper into your problem it would a huge help. What ever seems to be the biggest problem is what i might be spending my senior year working to correct. All input it sick.

Find a new base material.   I have a secret one im going to test this summer when I make some skis.... Im not making a ski company btw people just trying to find a better base for park skis.

Edge cracks, punches, and ripping out. There has to be a stiffer but more maleable (however u spell it) material. And the way edges are secured has to be far better so they never ever rip out. GO!

The base on my skis is starting to, idk if you would call it delaminating, but the base at the tips is starting to separate from the topsheet and poke out where its supposed to be flush with the edge of the ski

my constant delamming. i always feel as though they're going to fall apart, even though i know that its just superficial, and it scares me cuz i love my skis

1. Stronger, more durable base materials. Preferably that are fast and stay fast.

2. Stronger edges that don't crack or rip out as easily but also that are really strong metal so you won't stick to rails hardcore and flip over.

top sheet delaminating is always a huge problem but its never a big issue when it comes to the performance of the ski. id say if you could find a way as to make the the edge of the the ski one entire piece maybe that would help?  since my edges are always ripping off front where the two edges meet i nthe front and back. but im no engineer so i wouldnt know

With my Anthems, it would have to be weight. They're kinda chunky compared to my friend's Atomics.

1. use softer metal for edges like liberty (fucking take the cake) for the soft metal doesnt heat up as bad as harder metal so when on rails and boxes the friction causes the edges to heat up then once they hit snow they quickly cool and this constant super heat to super cool makes the edges weak and then crack. so yeah softer metal edges
2. larger edges
3. cap/sidewall construction
4. use more bamboo stronger, forgiving, and responsive
5. more fiberglass braids

Thick edges and base. Line is the best from what I have seen so far. Thin edges should not be used in any circumstance, I don't care how much weight thicker edges add, reduce that weight somewhere else. Edges are the most important. Also, the base that Line uses on the chronics and Lizzie is by far the most superior base ever created. You can stomp on rocks and ride over them with only scratches. Haven't waxed my chronics once this season, skied roughly 45 days on them, and they are still fast and they are not dry. Only wax was from over the summer storage and a few times of rub on.

You should brainstorm for a day to make a replaceable edge and sidewall for park skis underfoot, and then realize that your exact design has already been patented by Armada.

One thing I do not like about Line is that stupid plastic shit they put over the topsheet. It doesn't really serve a purpose, chips and peels like a bitch which your skis get snagged on, and dumbasses always complain because they think it's delam.

i had this idea for a long time: inserts in the base and top of the ski under the binding where an interchangeable additional metal edge can be tightend or clipped in (a bit like skins, just fixed alot tighter), over the skis actual edge. this could be added when skiing intensively rails and removed for skiing kickers and the rest of the mountain. it would greatly minimize edge cracks and pullouts in the skis edge, and when ahving broken the interchangeable edge it could be replaced for cheap.

overall i think just durability, topsheet chipping is just annoying as hell even if it doesnt affect the performance of the ski, also core shots and just basically skis falling apart i think is the main problem with a lot of skis, i know it is basically enviable but it would be great if skis were able to last for longer

I would say core shots because my skis have bad core shots and every time I go to take a huge piss in the trees I get piss all over my skis and they get pisslogged. Just a thought.

They are very durable.... they just scratch and chip a lot but it helps stop delaming if that makes sense.

Does this make sense it's hard to explain but bassicaly the edges are the same as a normal ski (full wrapped around the ski) but the tip and tail edges are not exposed so like there would be a cap construction over the edges to keep them safe and it still keep it light. This could prevent delaming in the tip and tail maybe... or not, i don't really know

it could just be me but on both of my skis, the point where the edge meets is has been a problem. on my afterbangs the point where it meets has dented in or cracked in one way or another, causing some major problems on one ski. if there was anyway to make one continuous edge that'd be sweet ahah
