Has anyone experimented with making their own wax?

i know kids here are starting to make their own skis and snowboards, so i'm wondering if anyone has ever tried to home brew some wax. i do a majority of my own tuning and the tuning for my family, with the exception of bindings, and go through wax like crazy. i'm constantly buying wax and over time it really adds up.

post recipes, techniques, and if it has worked well or not!

People make ski's but they like to do so, I highly doubt people will enjoy making wax. Partially because:
- The difference in wax just has to do with temperatures outside
- Doesn't have anything to do with the skiing itself
- Is way too complex chemically wise to beat the real producers.

That aside I just use candle wax when I've ran out...

What I do is melt down shavings, strain them to remove particles, and pour them into molds to reuse them

Hmm threads for this. Also, does anyone know if mixing waxes while waxing is bad? I'm currently on little odds and ends of warm snow wax and I have about a half bar of universal wax left.

a lot of shops will sell a brick of the wax they use to wax customers skis considerably cheaper then name brand stuff, its not as good but way cheaper

There are people on here that make wax in their garages. Ocean Wax is one, out of Minnesota, and BoardSide Down out of Oregon.

I have to agree with everyone, making your own wax would be pretty hard, i bought some dakine easy apply wax for 12$ and it works pretty good...maybe you could try it.

let me clarify.
i know how to wax my skis, i've done it dozens of times with a bunch of different waxes. i was just wondering if it was reasonable to make home made wax.

ive been saving my wax shaving for the last 4 years in an ice cream bucket.. the thing weighl like two pounds by now haha i should probably melt it down to make an all temperaure wax out of it

my friend has a company called Maples Wax and he does it all himself. unfortunately he snowboards, and i also ahve no clue how he does it.

I almost always mix a couple different styles of wax on my skis, usually in the middle or last layer.

Mixing wax is fine, this spring hasnt been as slushy as previous but I put two lines of general temp and one line of warm temp wax down the middle and mix the two, worked pretty good.

Also the shavings is a good idea, we use this at my shop to make rental ski wax/buff wax and it works fine.

Get a metal coffee tin or something and put some shavings in and melt it with a heat gun. Put in bits at a time and it will melt quicker rather than melting a shit load, plus keep the end of the heat gun out of the tin as it sets it on fire, I blew one up at the end of last season :(
